One year ago today I made the decision to come out to my family, and then immediately come out publically. As the New Year was counted in, I chose to start 2016 out. In the weeks leading up to this New Years Eve I thought about my life over the last year, thinking of how coming out really changed my life, and where I’m at today. I am very pleased to say that in the past year my life has not really changed at all, actually. In fact the only ways it has changed are in the normal ways anyone’s life changes: I met lots of new people, experienced a lot more things, did a lot more work, nothing that being queer makes any difference. In fact, coming out was very anticlimactic, almost boring, almost unnecessary for me. While I had hoped for a single tear maybe, or a cheesy, cliché group hug, I found that the coming out ritual was dated and built up too much in society. It may be a testament to the people I surround myself with, who genuinely love me for who I am, or the fact that there is this much love and acceptance in the world that this ritual is becoming less weighted, so thank you so much to each of the people I love most in this world, you all made the “Scariest Moment” a walk in the park. Here’s to another gay ol’ year!
