An old couple is basking in the light of dawn breaking through the dimly lit sky; stars gradually replaced by sun. An old man holds his wife between his hand and his chest. She is resting, as would he soon enough. He rests his back against the grassy field and closes his eyes as the sun slowly peaks through the horizon.
His chest gradually moves up and down. The rhythmic thumping of his heart encompassed the entirety of his wifeâs form. It lulled her, keeping her still and fully relaxed.
Until it was no more.
The thumping that vibrated her entirety came to a halt. The mountain of his chest that steadily moved up and down slowed.
It was no more. She opened her eyes without much of a response initially, but even in a tired state, her unconscious knew something was amiss, even if her conscious self hadnât been made fully aware yet. She tried to crawl out of his hand which still rested atop of her, but it had grown stiff.
Panic overcame her. She frantically used all the strength she had in her frail old body, but it was a struggle to get out. She desperately called his name. Louder and louder and louder her voice grew.
She let out a choked sob.
She had finally escaped his grasp and frantically ran up his chest. She clambered onto his face and grabbed ahold of his nose. His lips were curled upwards, smiling. His eyes were shut. His nose wasnât cold- none of him was- but there was an absence of heat that was unmistakable.
There wasnât any warm air- none from in front of her, nor from behind.
She slid down his cheek and screeched his name into his ear, but all of it was for naught. He didnât budge. She fell to her knees and cried silently, staring up at the mountain sized man whom she had grown to love and cherish. The man whom she had lived with for decades, built memories with, built a family with, built her entire life with.
She was still, as was he.
She let out a breath.. She used the folds of his shirt to climb back up. She managed to climb onto his face and knelt on his forehead. With her hands- wrinkled and aged, yet callous and strong- she brushed wisps of hair out of his face and spoke, âMy dear. My sweet dear. My love. There will never be anything, nor anyone like you. I cannot bury you for I am too small. I only hope that you chose here and now because you want this to be your final resting place. I will let the children know you have passed. My dear,â she traced the wrinkles on his skin, âI know you would not want to be mourned, I know you have said before that you would want us to celebrate the life you lived rather than mourn its end. For you, I will. My beloved giant. My beloved Esra.â
She stood up and leapt off of him. She took a moment stare at him, admiring every wrinkle and every little âimperfectionâ- one last time.
She started into the woods, only looking back once. A new set of tears rolled down her face, but she quickly wiped them away with the back of her sleeve.
Reminder that all those g/t couples that you love have to die eventually. Those friendships, parents, all of them. One without the other. Iâm not sure what sparked me to write this specifically, but here you are.
This was inspired by this set of lyrics specifically:
