“I’m glad to hear it, though I should hope your other- Uh, tech support staff, carry out those checks on a fairly regular basis.” Christopher was vaguely aware of his ‘cover’, or the job title he would assume and be paid for (hopefully on a regular basis depending on how well he impressed the other. Secure files took 10 minutes tops, though for his guest, he might have to make it 5. Or 20, if he was right about the unsubtle flirting that seemed to have appeared the second his employer walked through the door. “If they’re what I assume you’re insinuating, those could happen in plenty of other locations. However, setting does affect the mood I suppose.”

Christopher chuckled lightly at this, and wondered if this was simply how Mr Wa- Ryan spoke to all potential employees, or if he just happened to have caught his eye this time. “Well it wouldn’t settle well with my conscience if I didn’t offer.” The hacker smirked, letting out a soft breath of amusement here as he set up the program on his laptop. “Even if I was making such a presumptuous offer, something tells me that those particular messes don’t tend to affect you too badly. Besides, surely you should enjoy your work?” Turning the screen to Ryan with a soft smile. Time to show off - just a little.

“I gathered from your emails with a Miss Viola Leighton that it was Harvail Inc. you wanted the documents from, a good attempt with the encryption by the way. However they’d actually not developed the designs as fair as they’d been boasting - mostly because they stole the initial blueprints from Westroes Ltd. The files can be on this hard drive within a quarter hour, once I’m paid of course.” He shot the other a winning smile. “Any questions?”

“If I don’t enjoy it, I don’t waste my time on it... and not all messes are ones I need to clean up right away.” Ryan enjoyed play things. It was amusing to him to think back to a time when he would have been too afraid to talk to anyone as he did now - these days he couldn’t stop himself. Pretty things had to be played with, and his new hacker was fairly pretty. “And its only by being presumptuous that you get anything in life. That’s been my experience.” 

Ryan leaned back in his seat, a easy smile on his face, “I think I’ve grasped everything, thank you. And don’t you worry, I always pay for a job well done.”

Chris knew that technically, he should be terrified. Of fucking up or offending this man, or failing him in any way. He was perfectly aware that Mr Wayland could have him disappear overnight with no questions asked if he wished it - however, it could have been the angelic features of his appearance, or the way his smirk curled up in the corners of his lips… but Christopher was at worst, a little nervous. Hopefully, it showed enough not to damage the other man’s ego.

“Good.” Closing the door firmly, he turned to his slightly shorter guest. “There are no unwanted eyes or ears in here, so you can speak freely,” he offered, gesturing around and retracting the hand politely. “Well then, Ryan, you’re in the right place - for the job and first names. Why don’t we move to the living room? It tends to be more comfortable than the hallway in my experience.” Christopher was not ignorant to the looks Mr Wa- Ryan was giving him. And he was not complaining either. The shirt and trousers he wore suited his physique perfectly, whilst he himself was starting to question his choice of jeans and flannel top as he appeared severely under-dressed. 

“Would you like anything to drink?” He asked, opening his ‘work’ laptop and accessing his account, trying not to stare at his employer. That was, however, becoming difficult, as every time he glanced at the other, he found another thing that was just a little too perfect and attractive to be any good for anyone. 

“I had enough faith that you’d be smart enough to make it so.” Ryan did not bother arriving at places his dealings were going to be find out. At the current moment, it simply looked like he was making a new acquisition for his completely legitimate Wayland Inc. and he had ever intention of making sure it stayed that way.  “I don’t know... there are activities that can be quite interesting in hallways.”  

Despite the amused smirk Ryan presented at the thoughts that were now floating in his head, he followed the other to the offered living room, “Manners. Somebody raised you well, however I’ll politely decline. Mixing pleasure with business can be quite... messy, can’t it?” There was a pointedness to his glance that seemed to suggest Ryan did not mind such messes as much as he might have been saying.

Christopher had had plenty of stupid ideas before. From hacking into several banks to take a few grand, all the way to cutting a slit in his eyebrow trying to look trendy, he had done it all. However, after being contacted by one of the most influential and powerful men in London’s main organised crime circuit, he had agreed to hold a meeting in his own apartment. Now, to give Christopher some credit, if Mr. Wayland could contact him, he probably already knew where he lived, but nonetheless it probably wasn’t the smartest idea. Hearing three sharp knocks on his door, the male left his seat and walked down the hall to answer. Briefly, he wondered what the other would think of him. In an apartment covered in technology thanks to his recent acquisition of money for gear, apart from his kitchen which was spotless, and of course his room - though he doubted he needed to even consider that. Opening the door, he gestured for the other to enter before he fully processed just how… Young the other was. And attractive - very attractive. “I hope you didn’t have too much trouble finding me. Christopher,” he introduced, offering his hand for the other to shake. “I assume you can now tell me exactly what it is you want me to do for you?”

Appearance was everything. It was a lesson that had taken Ryan a number of years to realize, but once he had it was a lesson that he had never forgotten. The world was an extremely superficial place - they did not care if you were a good, or a bad person, only if you had the appearance of one or another. Someone who looked shifty could get away with very little, while someone who looked like a saint could get away with murder.

Ryan should know after all. People had often told him he had the face of an angel, and the list of lives that had ended at his orders if not his own hands was quite extensive.

It was this mentality that made Ryan determined to look his best everywhere he went. He did not wish to stand out of course, but a pressed shirt and expensive pants did not harm any situation. Besides, it flattered his tall form and broad shoulders, so why shouldn't he take that to his advantage? He was in fact straightening the crisp white shirt that he had worn that afternoon, as the door was opened and his appointment begun.

"Yes." Ryan looked the boy who opened the door over. He was younger than himself, but not by much. After all, Ryan did only have a few years over two decades to his name anyway. "Well. I have a company that believes I do not need enterance into their secure files, and well... I have been lead to believe that you are quite good at getting around complications like that." Looking over the young man again, he curled his lips into a crooked smile, "And for you, its Ryan."

“Do the bad people even know you’re alive? Maybe you’ve been lucky enough to survive this long on your own because they haven’t had the thought that you would out here,” he offered the idea, shrugging the best he could shortly afterward. “Or maybe you’re just too good and they haven’t been able to keep up,” he added and let out a soft sigh. “But what do I know?” Ryker chuckled very quietly. He pushed the straps of his bag off of his back and pulled it out in front of him, rummaging through the supplies in search of some sort of food. “Dark Chocolate and Cranberry, or Dried Cherry?” He asked with an arched brow, holding up two different types of granola bars, a small grin on his lips. “It’s all I’ve got right now.”

Chloe didn’t mind his questions, or the implication that she was getting by mostly on luck. It was something she had thought countless times before, and would continue to think until all this was over. Frankly she wasn’t good at running or hiding, so the only answer must have been she was some how getting lucky. “I don’t know, your guess is as good as mine. I guess I should just be happy that for now whatever I’m doing is working and... live with that.” She shrugged her shoulders, before grinning slightly at his offer, “I’ll take whichever you do not want. You’re sharing your food with me, it would hardly be fair of me to take what you want, even if its by mistake.”

“Yeah, I know what you mean,” Ryker replied with a nod and turned back to look at her with a smile. Maybe she saw it, maybe she didn’t. The room was dark after all but he wanted her to know she could trust him and maybe a genuine smile every once in a while would help his case. Besides, he hadn’t actually smiled in a long time. Ryker let out a soft breath while she looked inside, rolling his shoulders before stepping forward. “I’ll take my chances,” he said quietly and crawled inside, adjusting himself so that he could move into the small place. Once he was inside, he leaned his back against the wall and pulled his legs to his chest; his shoulders pushed forward from the tight room. “What was it like being from a royal family?” Ryker asked as he flashed the light at the ground in front of her so that she could see where she was going.

Chloe could not exactly be certain that he was smiling at her, the shadows were long and expressions were hard to distinguish, however she could feel the smile in the way that he spoke and just... the air. Perhaps it was just that she wanted to have found someone friendly, but it was there even as she crawled into the small space after him, “It’s really not that exiting. I mean... I know everyone thinks that it is, because there’s fancy clothes and people do tend to just give you things, but they aren’t really free.  People expect you to be a certain way and do certain things. It’s a lot to live up to, or well... it was I guess. Not sure anyone really cares what I do anymore. Not sure anyone but you and some very bad people know I’m alive anyway.”

His eyes remained focused on the hall ahead, having too much trust in the girl behind him. How could he trust someone so easily? Maybe it was because his father lived to protect her family. Or maybe it was because he knew she wasn’t dangerous to him. Honestly, he didn’t put too much thought into it. All he cared about right in that moment was finding a safer place to hide for the night. A big abandoned building like this was bound to draw attention for the people hunting any survivors. When she told him what she enjoyed doing he paused, and turned to look at her with a warm smile. “An escape,” Ryker spoke quietly and gave a simple nod. “What kind of things do you draw?” He asked as he continued walking, turning into a smaller room at the end of the hall and flashing the light around. Papers were scattered everywhere and glass littered the floor near the window, but there was a small hole in the wall and he moved to check it out. “I think this is where we’ll stay for the night,” he told her as he peeked his head in, a tight space between the two walls of the opposing rooms but it was better than laying out on the floor in the big room.

Chloe watched the boy walk in front of her wondering what it was that they were doing, that she was doing.  Surely she should have learned by now that trust was not something that she could give away so freely, and yet she wanted to give it to this boy. Maybe she just did not want to be alone any longer, though she did not feel free enough to state that, not yet... perhaps not ever. “A little of everything... I guess. I used to draw the palace a lot, little spots no one else ever seemed to notice but I always found people more interesting, there’s just... more there you know?” Chloe glanced at him with a soft warm smile, before she turned her head to look at the space that he had found. It certainly was hidden but it also seemed a little, “It’s certainly going to be... cozy.”

“Maybe you’ll get that chance. Hell, maybe I’m that person,” Ryker pointed out with a shrug of his shoulders. This girl was probably high on the wanted list to those who oppose them. A cruel world now was what they lived in and the distant screams of those in custody of those horrible people continuously flooded his mind. Maybe Chloe was their chance to change all of that. Maybe the people would fight back if they saw hope for a better future and until months ago, that was the nations royal family. “I did know that, but it’s a pleasure still. Come on, there has to be a better place in this building to hideout for the night,” Ryker gently pulled her hand in the direction he wished to go but let go once he was walking again. “So, what did you enjoy doing before the world went to shit?” He asked out of curiosity and to distract himself from the fear of it all, pulling out his dim flashlight as he searched for a more secure hiding place.

“Maybe you are.” Chloe reached up a hand to push her hair behind her ear, as she gave him a small almost playful smile. Sure, the voice that was wondering if she should still be trusting him was whispering within her ear, but Chloe enjoyed the idea of having someone that she could perhaps trust again. While she had always been a quiet person, she had not been one who expected to be lonely. Maybe meeting Ryker was... meant to happen. Maybe it would make things better, “Well... there were a lot of things that I did that were not so much about enjoying them as simply having to do them.... but just for me?  I liked to draw. I don’t know if I was much good at it, but it was good for keeping my mind off of ... well anything else.”

He watched her closely as she stepped a pace in his direction, her face visible for a short moment before her hair dropped back over her face. Her words did not strike him with surprise but the pain and disappointment ached in his chest. That slim possibility that maybe his father was still alive shattered once again, but how childish of him was it to feel that way. Ryker looked at the brunette and stepped forward with a sad smile. “I’m sorry you had to go through all of that,” he told her genuinely and crossed his arms over his chest. “Those people… they must know you’re still alive… and you pick the worst places to hideout,” Ryker pointed out with a raised brow. “I can help you if you want. It’s what my father would have done… what he did,” he sighed and moved in her direction once again, this time stopping a few feet in front of her. “Ryker King,” he said quietly and put out his hand and offered the girl a smile. The feeling was strange as he wasn’t used to being around any other people. It was almost like he was dreaming.

“I got lucky. I only hope that perhaps I can use it to help someone… anyone else… eventually.” Chloe was both thankful for her freedom and ashamed of it. Why did she get to run away while everyone else was simply… trapped. Some perhaps still, others who she knew did not. “At least I am alive.” She muttered, feeling a little defensive for a few moments before she glanced at his extended hand and gave a half sigh with a very tiny laugh. “Maybe I have not, though… I was not exactly raised to handle this sort of thing. Nice to meet you Ryker, I’m Chloe… though I have a feeling that you already knew that.”

Some relief washed over him when she seemed to show little fear at first but the longer they stood in silence, the more he began to worry. Soon he felt the hostility and her attempt to hide the fear that returned. She was no longer visible to him once she stepped back but he could make out little movement in those shadows. Ryker understood the questions she asked and realized the way his words could have been interpreted so he stepped into the light further and put his hands up in defense. “My father worked for your family. I don’t suppose maybe you know where he is. I mean you’re alive, so surely he is too right?” He asked with some desperation in his words. However, as the air grew silent once again he began to wonder if maybe she was here alone. Maybe she was the only one to escape.

Despite all that has happened, it was not in Chloe’s nature to be distrusting. Her recent experiences wanted to question whether he was simply lying in order to gain her trust but her kind nature simply felt sorry for him. Sorry for the family that he had likely lost, and the pain that she knew all to well. “I... I don’t know.” Chewing on her bottom lip she took half a step forward, a little close the boy who had appeared from no where. “I... don’t know where anybody is or if they’re-they’re-” she ducked her head a little, allowing her hair to fall over her face, hide it from the sight of this Ryker. He did not need to see the emotions that crossed her face, “I left them...alone. Maybe I shouldn’t have, but it all happened so quickly that-that... Well I don’t know. I’m sorry.”

All he ever was and aspired to be was shattered to pieces the moment his father called him over the phone and told him to hide outside of the city. His father worked as the head security for the royal family in their country’s capital, so when he heard the panic in his voice; he knew it had something to do with that. Everything had happened so fast and he never had the chance to stop and actually evaluate what was going on. Ryker was studying at a private school with hopes of one day joining the legal system; living in a run down apartment as he didn’t have the money to live on campus. Luckily he got out before all the chaos broke out but as time passed, he realized the reality of this new life and what it had in store for him. 

He did not know how much time had passed since he last heard his fathers voice, but he did know he wouldn’t hear it ever again. The royal family was overthrown and executed by a corrupt band of government, and anyone associated with them was on the kill list. Since his father worked for them, he knew he would also be a target as the son of their head of security. There was no more good in this world. So, during the day he would strengthen himself and scavenge nearby areas before moving on to the next location. During the nights, he hid in the darkest of hiding places to avoid being detected. One evening he came across a warehouse and decided to look around for just about anything. Ryker scanned the dark rooms and was about to call it a night when he heard a woman’s voice and nearly tripped over his own feet. 

He remained silent for a few moments, frozen where he stood at the sudden encounter. People in these dark days weren’t necessarily friendly, so he pulled out his knife and slowly approached where he heard her voice come from. 

“Name’s Ryker. I-I don’t want any trouble. Just looking for a safe place to crash for the night,” he spoke in a calm voice, hoping she wouldn’t cause any trouble. As he stepped into one of the backrooms, he saw her in the final light of day and so he knew her face immediately. “Holy sh-… you’re still alive.”

It was a boy.  Even in the dim light of the dying day Chloe could see that he couldn’t have been much older than herself if he was at all.  Her natural instincts, the ones that she had been raised with from birth, were insisting that such a fact had to mean that he was harmless. She wanted to trust in the fact that youth still meant innocence, but she had spent too long on the run to do such a thing. She might want to trust him, but how could she when her whole world had already fallen apart. 

The people who had killed her family had not look like they meant any harm, and how had that turned out? 

At his final words she shrunk back, finding more shadows to hide in, and keep more distance between the two of them. He had said he had meant no harm but that had been before she had been recognised. Chloe was certain her life could buy anyone quite a few things if they were willing to give it, “It would seem I am... what’s it to you? Are you planning on doing something about it? Because... because... I’ll-It’ll be harder than you think. I... I rather like being alive.”

Unexpected Ally || Chloe&Ryker

This wasn’t how she had expected her life to go. Then again, there might have been something a little strange if she had expected for her family to be overthrown, her father murdered, brother captured and herself barely managing to escape the same fate.  Chloe wasn’t even sure how it had all happened.  One moment she had been asleep in her bed and the next her childhood nanny was rushing her out the underground tunnels that she had played in so many times as a child.  That was nearly a month ago now.  Chloe had not thought much of her ability to survive without the luxuries that had always been a part of her day to day life. She was a soft girl, quiet and trusting - it was not the sort of personality that bode well for life on the run. 

But when it was your life or theirs it seemed that even the softest of people could make the hardest of choices. At the very least, Chloe had figured out how to stay out of sight. She had figured out how to get what she needed while trusting the smallest amount of people possible. It was not a nice life, but it was a life.  She would do what she had to to keep it that way.  Which is why her hand wrapped around the small blade she had managed to steal a number of weeks ago when she heard footsteps approaching her current hiding spot (an abandon warehouse on the outside of town). Perhaps it would have been more logical to hide -what was Chloe, as kind as she is, truly going to do with any weapon? - but that wasn’t in her. Not really. So instead she kept her hand on the knife, and her eyes directed into the darkness, waiting to see what it had to hold for her.  

It was really only a matter of time until someone had found her anyway.

Hey Baby (I Think I want to Marry You) || Chryan

The two were so used to one another by now that they were often in sync with each other. Holding each other whilst moving across their bedroom for example, was a specialty of theirs. Christopher helped as best he could to guide the other to the bed, whilst determined not to break their contact as they went. It didn’t take long for them to reach the edge of the mattress, and Chris turned them around so he now had his back facing the bed. He ran his hands across the wide expanse of Ryan’s back, before they lowered to the side of his thighs, and he sat himself down, tugging Ryan down on top of him.

Ryan happily settled himself on top of the other man, shifting his legs so that he could straddle his lap far more comfortably. It was a movement that was easy and familiar to him - they had been together so long that there wasn’t anything new in theory, but Ryan still felt the same sense of awe that he always had when he realized just how easily, how perfectly their bodies tangled together. In their new position, it was now easier, for him to wind his arms around the other man’s back, sliding both of them closer still, as he twisted his hips into a rhythm similar to that of his lips.

“Well I promise t’ always say bless you if you’ll do tha’ for me, Miss. We may never know, bu’ if you ask me, it’s better t’ be safe than sorry.” He nodded, and gave her a mock-serious nod and wink, before scratching his chin absentmindedly. “If you could be in a musical, what kind of thin’ would you like t’ do? I reckon you’d be brill. ‘onestly, everyone can sing. It jus’ depends who’s listenin’ if you’re any good.” Jay laughed kindly enough, and gave her a reassuring look. “I’m 22, love. So only a few years older than yourself.” He smiled at her, and glanced around for any sight of her mother, hoping he wasn’t keeping her too much. “So do you know wha’ play you’re seein’?”

“It’s a deal! Then we’ll both be safe... at least as long as we’re around each other we will be,” She tilted her head to the side and giggled happily at her own statement. It was fun having somebody to talk to. Not that she didn’t talk to... well honestly everyone. Lettie had always been social, but talking to this Jay fellow was far more fun than talking to a lot of the people she had talked to lately. Lettie enjoyed things that were fun. “Oh well I don’t usually let anyone but my teddies listen when I sing so.... I don’t know what that makes much of a difference but I’d want to be in a fun musical! One with all the songs that make you want to dance and laugh and sing along. Don’t you just love fun things?”

‘Sheesh,’ he thought to himself, ‘this girl could talk for the country.’ He didn’t mean it in a mean way though, he was just in awe at how much she had to say on everything, and how she seemed almost determined to make everything… Happy. She was actually incredibly sweet. He found himself chuckling, and nodding with an incredulous smile. “You’re right… Bu’ then, in olden times people were pretty strange weren’t they? They said bless you cos they though’ it’d stop your soul escapin’ through your nose,” he told her, giving her a knowing look. Watching her bounce back into happiness just made him shake his head a little. She was a walking ray of sunshine. “The theatre? D’you like the plays or the musicals more?” Jay asked, interest growing by the second around her. He struggled a little at first to keep up with her, but he started to take more of her questions as rhetorical to match her pace. “Oh? How’d you know ‘ow old I am?” He asked with a smile. “And I certainly hope I’m like you Miss.”

“Oh my! I certainly hope that I don’t lose my soul through my nose. That doesn’t sound pleasant at all. Maybe I should say bless you more often just to be on the safe side, those olden people might have known what they were doing,” she grinned, her voice just as bubbly as before so it might have been difficult to tell that she was teasing, but at the very least her expression was clear of all worry. “Oh, I love the both! I mean... musicals are more fun, or well have more going on, I love all the songs, but plays are just as fun too... I think it might be fun to be in a musical but I don’t really know if I’d be any good at it at all.  Oh gosh! Well I mean I just sorta guessed cause you didn’t look that much older than me so I figured you probably aren’t but-but well I guess I don’t know do I? I’m 18. How old are you?”

Christopher smirked some more at Ryan’s reaction, and rested his chin on his shoulder, giving his boyfriend - no, fiance - a big, stupidly happy smile. “So, so many,” he confirmed, pressing a kiss to his temple and smiling as they started to move towards their bedroom. 

He couldn’t help the unstoppable happiness bubbling up inside him, hand in hand with the man he loved. This was it. This was their future: each other. Ryan wanted that with him too. “Hell, you’re so perfect…” He mumbled to himself, not fully aware he was actually saying this aloud. But he just let out a slightly disbelieving laugh, and tugged him inside, closing the door behind them.

“You’ve actually made a total mess of me, stranger.” And with that, he wrapped his arms back around his, and kissed the other.

Ryan did not get passed the disbelieving laugh at the perfection comment before they were tangled together again and he had more important things to focus on than just how not perfect he could and had been in the past. They had been together long enough now that he knew no matter what he said Christopher wouldn’t believe him anyway, so it was hardly worth the effort even if he hadn’t been preoccupied with seeing if he can get him back to the bed without actually having to dislocate his lips from the other’s. There were some perks too having lived in the same place so long, that there was very little difficulty in wrapping his arms around the other’s middle and walk backwards towards their bed.

Christopher laughed a little louder at this, unable to stop smiling still. His cheeks would start aching soon if he didn’t stop. “And here I was thinking I’d never thank Ebola for anything. Well at least it’d getting creative.”

Chris felt the laugh more than heard it, with his arms wrapped around Ryan’s waist, his chest up against his back and he wondered to himself why they hadn’t done this months ago. He’d always believed he’d find someone after all, and known for a while now he wanted no one else.

The hands running over his brought small goosebumps to his skin, and he scoffed lightly, pressing another kiss under Ryan’s ear this time, then another right over his pulse. “Come to bed with me love,” he murmured softly. “After all, I don’t need a ring to prove I like it.”

Ryan loved the sound and the feeling of Christopher’s laugh. There was nothing more intoxicating to him than the feeling of that deep rumble from the other’s chest so close it might as well make his skin move too -- when it came right down to it, Ryan loved any moment in which they were so tangled together he was not entirely sure where he ended and Christopher began. 

That was how he felt things were meant to be.

Jay had mostly been taken aback by her thoughtfulness. He doubted any other residents of the building would even notice he was new, and if they did they’d think little of it, and then this bright and bouncy girl had skipped over to him as if this was the best part of her day. “I ‘ave to say I don’t like sad things, not for me.” He thought on this for a moment. “Well I’d say someone out there probably does, if you think of jus’ ‘ow many people there are in the world. So… Even in the saddest things, there’d be a little happiness.” He nodded to himself then, satisfied with his answer before he realized what he was doing. “I-I uh… Is there anything you’d like help with though, Miss?”

Lettie hummed, her head cocked slightly to the side as she thought about his answer, before a grin graced her features and she gave a firm nod of her head, “I think those oldtimey poets and such always seem to make a lot out of sadness and stuff. I mean they write about it a lot, though I guess that doesn’t mean they’re happy about it exactly, but why would you spend so much time writing about something if you don’t enjoy it? So... they have to enjoy something about it even if its sad and that’s weird and I don’t really get it.” Her brow had furrowed at some point during her rant, having confused herself with all her talking, but by the end of it she felt as if she had straightened out what she meant enough that her grin and a head nod were the expressions of choice once more. “Hmm? Oh! Oh no. I’m mostly just waiting for my mother to come downstairs. We’re supposed to go to the theatre, mother thinks its educational, I just find it fun, all of their stories and such -- but I wanted to say hello, because you’re going to be here cause you work and I live here and it seemed awful rude to not say hello to someone that you see every single day! Besides, they almost never hire people close to my age, and I thought it was kind of fun. Isn’t it fun when there are other people sort of like you around? Not that you’re necessarily like me. I mean I talk an awful lot and I don’t think that anyone can be quite like that, but we’re sorta around the same age so that has to be more alike that someone older in some ways, doesn’t it?”
