"So-- I hear you don't like pie. You don't prefer cake or something, do you?" [Oh, god forbid she like cake better.]
Headcanon #005
The Piemaker likes to watch Chuck make pies. He'll often watch her work when he thinks she can't see him (even though she always can).
Not to be rude or anything?
[ Who is she kidding, she’ll be rude if damn feels like it. ]
—But could you..shut up?
[The Piemaker did as he was told. He thought that maybe the redhead scared him.]
[But then--] "Hang on. This is my murder investigation."
ooc: *whispers* if i can't have a chuck to rp with then someone needs to die and Ned can bring them back and they need to just be bros like REALLY THO
"--I understand how weird it must be for me to have said 'you're not dead' when my poking woke you up. It's strange for me too. But in my defence you were sleeping very deeply."
[The Piemaker found himself in an awkward situation after coming across a sleeping individual who had appeared to be recently deceased. He was trying to smooth things over.]
"Extremely. Thank you, Ned."
[ The last time threat turned into one more time a few weeks later but Hikaru decided against bringing up the idea. Still he offered a smile as he carefully set the plant back on the stand where it belonged. He did appreciate his friend’s help when it came to his so-called emergencies. ]
"—Could be worse. I could deal with things much livelier than plants."
[ He’s not even going to mention the family of various Flytraps in the back. ]
[His hands were behind his back again. The thought of helping Hikaru with his gift and making anything else alive again didn't appeal to him. Plants... plants were fine. No one could get hurt-- no people. So no matter how many times he was asked to help, he couldn't see himself saying no. Anything else... well, Ned didn't know all there was to know about this power. He couldn't risk endangering any member of the crew.]
[Ned wouldn't admit it, not easily, but he actually enjoyed being able to use his gift. It added a touch of the extraordinary to his otherwise-- well, you could hardly call life aboard the Enterprise dull.]
"Besides your plants, I've only ever brought my dog Digby alive again to stay." [Said dog was back on Earth staying with his neighbour Olive Snook while he was away. But the fact that the dog had been alive over two decades including his life before his accident... It made Ned wonder what the limits to what he could do were. And what the real consequences of bringing a person alive again permanently would be.]
"I'm not sure I'd be much help to you if you didn't deal in plants." [That's not to say they wouldn't be friends. Ned very much liked spending time with Hikaru. It was just a huge bonus that he didn't have to keep this whole part of his life a secret and if his friend's work was in anything else, Ned doubted he'd have been as willing to share what he could do.]
"You’re funny. Though that shouldn’t be funny. That should be quite alarming. Still though. Point stands."
{How’d go from pies to dead bodies? The world may never know}
[The Piemaker smiled nervously. He had not been trying to be funny. What he said had happened, though it wasn't something he generally spread around, as the discovery of the dead girl who was not dead and the reasoning for this could likely have disastrous consequences for him. Consequences he dared not consider.]
[But the leap from pies to the dead was an easy one for Ned to make. After all, he did make a living off both.]
"..did you want more pie?"
Mini Caramel Apple Pies
Ned hates Halloween, you know. Makes him moodier than a pumpkin full of PMS.
"I didn’t exactly mean to be rude. I’m sorry."
"No-- it's not rude. Rude would be like if someone had faked their own death for --reasons and then someone else left a newspaper clipping of their obituary on the counter as a threat. Or dead bodies being put in your freezer."
[Whoa there, Ned.]
[The Piemaker did not think his customer was rude. Just curious.]
"I suppose I could just tell people I'm allergic."
"Hey. Are you here for the nurse? Because uh, well, that’s me.”
[Deep breath--] "Ah, yeah. I think something's probably the matter with me. Hard to describe."
[Or actually not at all. The Piemaker simply did not want to describe his issue with the stranger but it was thanks to Chuck's urging that he found himself there.]
[One long-winded, full of metaphors explanation later—]
[Avoiding, of course, anything to do with his ‘gift.’]
”And that’s why I don’t eat my own pie.”
"Was that entire explanation really necessary? You couldn’t get to the point faster?"
"But-- you asked." [Leave Ned along in the Pie Hole and when customers show up he talks their ears off. Normally Chuck stopped him from doing this sort of thing.]
[One long-winded, full of metaphors explanation later--]
[Avoiding, of course, anything to do with his 'gift.']
"And that's why I don't eat my own pie."
❝I’ve never felt so powerless against this monster. It’s something deep inside…I feel this emptiness… I feel like I can’t breathe. I’m scared of myself. Of what I’ve…become.❞
"...pie?" [The piemaker was carrying a box and in that box there was a pie. Cherry. He'd actually been on his way to a picnic, but thought that perhaps this stranger could use the pie more.]
"Also I've heard that talking about the problem you're undertaking can sometimes be helpful. But I would understand if you didn't want to talk to me--or accept my offer of pie--since we've never met before." [What Ned didn't understand was what made him stop to offer assistance at all. It was more the sort of thing Chuck would do. Perhaps she was rubbing off on him.]
[--not literally rubbing of course. That would kill her.]
[He's in a contemplative mood. In fact, Ned doesn't even notice that someone has approached him until they've stood there for several moments.]
"Oh! Ah-- can I help you?"
ichabooxcrane started following you
[Ned was frantic. Or getting close. His dog, Digby, had broken free from his leash. This wouldn't be so bad if they were at home. Digby had a habit of ending up in the same spots if he happened to get out without a leash-- something an absent-minded Olive had allowed to happen on more than one occasion.]
[But-- he wasn't home. Home and The Pie Hole were not available to him for the time being as Chuck had been able to persuade him to travel, something the piemaker wasn't overly fond of. Sleepy Hollow became their destination when a private investigator friend, Emerson Cod, had heard of the recent events taking place in the town and thought they might be able to find a case or two during their stay.]
[Ned didn't care about any of that-- and quite frankly, some of the stories he'd heard sounded a little far-fetched. Right now, all he cared about was Digby.]
[And the first pedestrian he came across would have to deal with the piemaker's worry--]
"Ah, excuse me-- sorry. You haven't seen a golden retriever have you?"
