April 17th at Karate Dungeon
Okay, sorry I don't really remember who the touring band was at that last show (it may have been Banned Books). I've been getting about 5 hours of sleep these and goddam I've had a headache all day. So, I decided to go to a noise show to take a break before exams (aha, ha!).
Matt Martin started it off. It was his first show, a nice basic static noise set. At the end he threw his mic a couple times and chipped the grating it was pretty sick.
Next was Daughters Goggles (Steven). He was the most dancey-experimental act of the night.
Third was Pool Party (who was technically Bleach Boi because his partner in Pool Party wasn't there), who played some pretty acoustic guitar stuff.
Fourth was Wydyde once again some wonderful distorted folk. I lovvvve this guy.
After that, the touring acts set up. Rat Babies was some slow, what I would call metal. One guy on a really distorted bass, the other guy on drums. They were old dudes and it took me about 15 minutes to get into their set, but once I did I kind of liked it.
Sex Bruises and Dromez were both neat staticky shit. I got CD from all three touring bands so I'll post them someday.

I played my second show last night at Karate Dungeon, and the touring band was so so so beautiful. I'll write up a post as soon as I have the time to get one of their mp3s to upload (same with my post about The Sun Parade...). Also I just got 10 CDs from Sidejar Records in the mail. Sidejar is/was run by Anthony Poynter, who is a really nice guy and has been diagnosed with cancer. Get Better Records has two compilation CDs where the money is going to Anthony, and all the music is nice so you should consider buying a CD.
Alors, my collection of neat underground music has nearly doubled since last week so you can expect a lot of posts about all the wonderful music soon.

By the way, after Wydyde at that show, an incredible band called the Sun Parade played, and then my friend freddie. I have another post saved pending Sun Parade's permission to post one of their songs.
March 11th at Karate Dungeon
This past week was my spring break, and I spent the latter half of it up on a mountain. That made for a really enjoyable break, and to top it off was the show I went to when I got back in town.
First to play was JD with some cover songs. My head was a little fuzzy at that point, but I remember that he played Where is My Mind and the Pokemon theme.
Next was Owl Like Creature, this guy Chris who plays originals on his acoustic guitar. Pretty guitar tone and a pretty voice.
Kieran played third (or maybe it was the other way around). I haven't seen her play as often as the other folks who tend to play these acoustic shows but it was real nice and she sang a sweet song to her girlfriend.
Fourth up was Wydyde, this guy Van who said it was his first real show. He had four or five pedals running through each other, he kept pulling his mic out of its pedal with his foot and his levels were just high enough for feedback and just low enough for it to not be completely constant. Overall he had a really driven, dirty blues sound and nerdy vocals. I told him that I was in love with him and for the time being I was.
Gray Autumn Transmission - Lost Trail
Here’s for totally neglecting to update this after that first show. I’ve gone to plenty of beautiful shows this past year, and I’ll try to post about them soon. Let’s start with the most recent one:
So, I like noise shows. I tend to like ambience and droning rather than more abrasive sets, but it’s all a really good way for me to just get lost in the noise and meet the musicians, who tend to be really nice people. It had been months since I’d been to a real, pure noise show, and my friend Sam booked two great bands for a show last thursday.
Lost Trail is Zachary Corsa and his wife Denny. They sat on the floor, put on some christmas lights, and Zachary played droning notes on a guitar while Denny played a rainmaker and some prerecorded noise. What they did not get around to using was a really neat machine for drawing out graphs, like a heart monitor or a lie detector or something. They turn it on and if you turn some knobs on it then the little drawing arm moves back and forth and whirrs.
All the Shining Things You Do - Madeline Ava
Avalon played third that night. She's usually too shy to play her songs in front of me, but I always like her set.
Madline Ava was the last of the touring people. She plays the ukulele and writes songs about being shy and having friends. Have I said that I loved all of the musicians this night yet?
Jake, James and Madeline all have different sounds, but all with a from-the-heart folk (or punk) attitude to their music. They were a perfect trio to tour together. I loved it all so much, and I really wished that I could have given them more than my single dollar to their donation jar. They each gave me one of their demo CDs that they made for the tour, and I'm still listening to all of them 2 weeks later, and I'll bet I'll still be listening to them forever. I wish I could be their friends. I had my camera in my backpack, but I forgot to take a picture of them :(
Wednesday (Dancin' With the Living Dead) - James Disaster
James played second. I just think his voice is so neat. A lot of people yell, and a lot of people sing kind of high-pitched, but this doesn't sound like most of those people. I just hope he doesn't end up like the guy from Jawbreaker and ruin his voice for as neat as it sounds.
In the middle of his set, a woman from the neighborhood ran into the building and shouted "y'all are fucking racist" at all of us. Apparently, someone had put up a flyer for an event at the coffeeshop in the wrong part of the neighborhood. James was actually singing a song about that topic at the time, and the audience had a pretty good racial mix. It was pretty upsetting to everyone, and James cut his set down by a song because of it. In the end he still put on a good show and I loved it and he gave me his demo CD.
Passion Fruit - Jake Lazovick
July 6th, Avalon played a show at Glenwood Coffee and Books. There were these five kids from DC touring the east coast for a few weeks; three solo acts and two friends tagging along. The first was Jake Lazovick.
Jake is two years younger than me and makes music like this and is touring with some friends during the summer. I am very jealous and wish I could do something with my life. He was a very nice guy and we have the same middle name and first initial.
The Leper and the Saint - Nathan K.
July 4th, house show at Science House. Lion Cub played first, I didn't watch their whole set and I didn't get a copy of their CD, so I don't really remember how they sounded, but I remember liking them a lot.
I was completely entranced by Nathan K. His act involved a loop pedal, which he used for percussion (a floor tom, a tambourine, and hand claps), and overlaid guitar chords and riffs. The result was kind of droney noise-folk. The CD is nothing like his live show, and I don't really think that it was worth $10 (especially since Jake, James, and Madeline deserved more money from me two nights later), but maybe he will be more likely to come back to Greensboro and play.
Avalon played a show two nights ago at Glenwood Coffee and Books, and the cutest group of people from DC were touring and played the show. They each gave me a CD and I don't ever want to forget them or stop listening to them.
I've tried in the past to keep a database of all my CDs so that I can remember which ones I've bought and when and where, but now that I actually go to shows I really want to remember all the neat people I've seen so that I can see some of them when they tour through Greensboro again, or so that I can look for shows when I travel.
So, this blog will be a journal of the neat little music that I find and the neat people that I see or meet.
