so i was looking at old pre-release stuff
and this caught my attention
Didnt remember the candles being blown out
So i went to check if the final game does this too, and sure enough, it does
(Btw i bet those are runes either sewn or painted into the carpet)
This also happens with summoned savior, of course
This is a very neat lil thing about spectres and darkness snuffing out lights as a trope of course, but also, this is tied to soul
Soul permeates the air, it could be said to be wind itself, and is also lifeforce
It is clear that soul feeds the candles as if oxygen, wispfire also follows this principle after all
So the arrival of void eats away at this ambient soul, reducing it until suffocating the flames
Far down below us, beneath the kingdom, the air grows stiller and a sense of emptiness pervades. Can life flourish down there? If so, I will hunt it.
Aside from snuffing out candles and setting air still, we can also see it draining the light away every time an enemy gets black threaded and whenever Grand Mother Silk screams and thrashes
But also, it drowns out sound
Vessels are famously silent, and there's all of the godseeker stuff, but its not just that
A short while ago i saw it pointed out that whenever the knight gets hurt, the audio gets muffled, something that doesn't happen in silksong
And also, there's this journal entry by Bretta
Troubled dreams beset the maiden. Her saviour gone, consumed below. Now her only companion the cold wind, moaning at her door. Her heart fluttered with sudden fear...Then still. A sudden calm. Why? A presence. A figure close behind.
She doesn't dare look, doesn't dare move, fearful the slightest action would break the spell. She knew the presence at her bed, knew the calm only they could bring.
Her white saviour, now protector, standing tall beside, powerful, perfect...
Of course, Bretta is doing a lot of flourish in her fanfic, but i think theres some true to it, like pale shell gleaming in the dark
and going back to void snuffling out candles, under the soul = oxygen analogy, wouldn't being near void make you short of breath?
Her saviour leaned close, sat beside, perfectly composed. In that charged, breathless moment not a word needed be spoken, The maiden's shell felt suddenly tight.
as a final note, with candles being consistently seen besides the spiritual and esoteric, it is curious that Sly's nailsage shrine has a bunch of candles
Mmm, i wonder what relation could the nailsage possibly have to soul....gee i wonder...
