Or they were bitter rivals for competition solos if they were both in glee club. Now they both live in NY and their friends set them up on a blind date, not knowing they went to the same high school. ~38,200 words

Size Isn’t Everything AO3 tumblr Based on this Prompt from the klaine prompt a fic blog on tumblr: Kurt's a bit of a size queen. His friend tells him about this guy Blaine from his boxing class and how he's caught a glimpse of his dick the other day and how fucking huge it was. (The friend doesn't know about Kurt's kink, he just mentions it randomly.) Kurt decides he has to meet Blaine and hook up with him. It's as good as he thought it would be and they keep hooking up, and eventually sex turns into a relationship. ~12,600 words

Title: Snow Place For a Mystery, pt 1 Word Count: ~317 Warnings: None Day 1: Team

“So do we?”

“Hm?” Blaine always sat on the back bench with Sam, not entirely because Sam was his best friend. Sitting in the very back seat of the van gave Blaine an excuse to stare at Kurt, who always sat in the middle. “Do we what?”

Kurt twisted around as well as he could with his seat belt on, his stare moving back and forth between Blaine and Sam. “I think Sam’s hungry.”

“Do we have any snacks left?” Not waiting for Blaine’s response, Sam leaned over him, squishing Blaine into the seatback and grabbing their backpack full of snacks from the floor of the van. “Kurt’s right, I'm starving.” Sam dug around in the back and made an excited noise, pulling a small handful of crackers out and holding them up. “Cheez-Itz! My favorite!”

“You two make a weird team.” Kurt shook his head, turning back around to face forward; Finn was driving, Rachel curled up in the passenger seat. “So Rachel, can you explain to me how Santana and Brittany wound up owning a ski lodge?”

Rachel’s eyes lit up as she twisted around to fill them in on the detail. “Yes, it was very unexpected. Brittany’s Uncle Leopold died last year, and apparently he owned a ski lodge, and he left it to Brittany.”

“Did we know Brittany had an Uncle Leopold?” Blaine asked.

Sam nodded, still munching on his crackers. “Yeah, I met him once. Cool dude.”

“That doesn’t explain what Santana and Brittany are doing with it. Are they actually trying to run a ski lodge?” Kurt shook his head. “It seems very responsible for them.”

“We can ask them about it when we get there.” Rachel shrugged. “Oh!” She pulled a brochure out of her bag, handing it to Kurt. “They sent me this.”

Kurt took the brochure, chuckling sharply. “Beaver Creek Lodge? Seems a little on the nose.”

In A Minute - Klaine Advent Edition: Day 6 dairy

For Klaine Advent this year I’m going to try to finish up a story I started writing in 2019, but never finished because of *waves hands around* everything.

It’s a fake-dating story called In A Minute, and you can read the existing 4 chapters on AO3 here, or on tumblr here. I originally expected the story to be another 2-3 chapters (or maybe 2 with an epilogue), so it should work out in the end, provided everyone behaves themselves.

Each Klaine Advent entry this year will continue the story, chronologically, i.e., I won’t be jumping around (unless the story calls for it). The word counts for each are likely to be all over the place; some could be 100 words, and some are sure to be more. I probably won’t post every day, but I’m not planning on doubling up any words of the day, so expect one entry per word. I’ll probably update AO3 when I have what feels like a chapter’s worth of story.

“What are you getting?” Kurt leaned into Blaine as they surveyed their options, making sure their shoulders touched in case anyone was watching them. They had made it through the night without any unexpected cuddling, and Blaine woke up in a better mood than he had been in the night before. He’d even suggested that they head down to the breakfast buffet that was being set out for the wedding guests, and Kurt was happy to join him. “There are a lot of things you don’t know about me, Blaine,” Kurt said as he shut the door to their hotel room. “ANd one of those things is that I love breakfast.”

“Duly noted,” Blaine replied, smiling.

The dining room wasn’t too crowded when they arrived, so they hit the buffet together before sitting. The selection was more or less the same as any other hotel breakfast buffet, only every dish was the extreme gourmet version of it. Blaine opted for freshly made scrambled eggs, apple sausage from a local farm, and a thick slice of fresh bread, toasted and slathered in what looked to Kurt like an obscene amount of butter. Not that he was in a position to say anything, since he’d opted for a crispy dinner plate sized Belgian waffle, topped with a tower of whipped cream and a generous helping of fat blueberries. “Calories don’t count when you’re at a wedding,” he whispered to Baine as they settled at a table, sitting next to each other rather than one of them walking all the way around so they could sit across.

“We’ll just have to make sure we dance it all off later.”

Kurt couldn’t resist. He ran his index finger through the mountain of whipped cream and brought it to his mouth. He hadn’t intended to be suggestive at all, but as he pulled his finger out of his mouth with a light *pop,* Blaine’s eyebrows threatened to eject themselves from his forehead.

“Sorry,” Kurt half apologized, but he wasn’t sorry at all. Kurt was so not sorry, in fact, that he swiped his finger through the whipped cream a second time, and offered it to Blaine with a teasing smirk. “I’ve been told it’s polite to share.” Blaine’s mouth dropped open just a little, whether in shock or horror or desire Kurt wasn’t going to find out - at least not until later.

“Isn’t this cute,” Sebastian drawled as he sat across from them. Kurt turned to scowl, but as he looked toward Sebastian, Blaine’s mouth sunk over Kurt’s cream covered finger, sucking the entire dollop clean off. It took all the restraint Kurt had not to jump up from the table. He supposed he deserved it.

“He is, isn’t he?” Kurt taunted. “Would you like some?” Kurt offered Sebastian his own finger of whipped cream, and for a second Kurt wasn't sure he hadn’t miscalculated and was going to have to let the jerk lick his finger.

“No thanks,” Sebastian answered. “I don't eat dairy.”

Kurt rolled his eyes. “Of course you don’t.”

Blaine had been quiet since sucking Kurt’s finger into his mouth, but Kurt didn’t think he was upset by what was going on. He seemed amused. “What’s up Sebastian?” He finally said.

“Check your phone. The band is going to be here in about an hour, but Michelle decided on a couple of songs and wants us to run through the first to see what sounds best.”

“Okay,” Blaine shifted in his seat, making a noise that Kurt would definitely equate with impatient exasperation. “I’ll meet you when we finish our breakfast,” he told Sebastian.

“Do you want me to come hang out with you?” Kurt asked, after Sebastian left. “I had planned to spend the morning in the sauna and then see what other perks I could indulge in, but if you want…”

“No, no, you enjoy your morning. I’ll meet you back in the room around five? That should give us time to get ready.”

“Okay,” Kurt said. Then he looked around at the room, fuller now than when they’d arrived, and kissed Blaine on the top of his head. “In case anyone’s watching,” he whispered.

Klaine Advent 2021 Word: orientation (ish) Word Count: 651 Warnings: none

“Michelle, wait,” Blaine pleaded. “It’s such short notice, we’d have to pick a song, and rehearse, and what if the band doesn’t want us to do it? And we don’t even know if Sebastian’s and my voices even sound good together! What if we sound like screeching cats, or… or Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton?” Blaine could feel himself starting to panic. He did not want to sing a romantic duet in front of 200 guests - including many members of his family, with Sebastian Smythe.

“Ooh, nice Rhinestone callout,” Kurt murmured to no one in particular.

“Don’t be silly Blaine,” his mother interjected. “I’ve heard you both sing, and there’s no way it won’t sound good. And as for the band - well they’re a wedding band for goodness sake, so I’m sure things like this happen all the time. And it would be such a nice thing to do for your cousin.”

Blaine looked at his mother and tried not to glare, he couldn’t help but believe that she had somehow maneuvered to make this happen. It would be just her style. Over her shoulder he could see Sebastian smirk.

“Why don’t we pull together a short list of songs that Michelle and David like, and that we think we can handle, and we can email it to the band,” Sebastian suggested. “That is, if Kurt can spare him for a few minutes?”

It didn’t look like Blaine was going to be able to get out of this, at least not without making a scene, and he was determined not to do that. It didn’t seem right to do that to MIchelle. Blaine sighed and reached down to slip his hand into Kurt’s. “Kurt could join us. He’s in musical theater, and he used to be in the glee club in high school, and he has a pretty good sense of my range.”

Sebastian’s eyes darkened for just a second, but he plastered on a smile and said, “Of course.”

Kurt squeezed Blaine’s hand tightly. Blaine knew Kurt had never heard him sing, and probably didn't have a great sense of Blaine’s anything. But he needed some support and Kurt was the only person at this wedding in his corner. Except maybe his dad, and he still hadn’t told Kurt about that conversation. What a long day.

Half an hour later they had a short list of songs that Michelle sent to the band, who responded right away to say they’d get back to her in the morning. They also confirmed that they had time to rehearse a song or two with her guest singers.

“I’m not sure about a couple of those songs,” Kurt said, after they’d excused themselves from the group. Blaine could tell Kurt was dragging him toward the bar, and he wasn’t going to protest. “Your cousin and her fiancé don’t really strike me as the Troy and Gabriella type.”

Blaine smiled. “Ah, but High School Musical is timeless Kurt.”

“I think you mean ‘dated’ Blaine.” When they got to the bar Kurt ordered a glass of red wine and a gin and tonic for Blaine.

“Am I hitting the hard stuff?”

“I thought you could use some reorientation after all that.”

Blaine nodded. Kurt wasn’t wrong about that. “I’m sorry this has been weird.” Kurt looked at him confused, and handed over his drink.

“What do you mean?”

Blaine shrugged. “Oh I don’t know, my mom, Sebastian, the nap thing.” Blaine was at a loss. It had been such a long day. “Everything?”

Kurt smiled. “Oh come on, a wedding isn’t really a wedding until there’s some unexpected drama; the groom hasn’t slept with any bridesmaids, or the best man -” Kurt winked, “That I'm aware of anyway. Michelle is barely even a bridezilla, and you warned me about Sebastian in advance. In fact, he’s the reason I'm here. It's hardly been weird at all.”

Klaine Advent 2021 Word: ancestor Word Count: 415 Warnings: none

“Blaine, darling, has Michelle found you? She wanted to ask you a question.”

Blaine accepted his drink from the bartender, silently grateful that no one was checking ID at this hotel. He didn’t think it was a good idea to get drunk or anything like that, but his mother had spent the better part of the last 45 minutes introducing him to a lot of relatives that he’d never heard of, and he was nearing the end of his rope. Kurt had discovered that the ancestors of the woman who owned the vineyard participated in the Connecticut Witch Trials, and had disappeared half an hour ago with one of the hotel party planners to find out more about it. Blaine hadn’t seen him since. “He’s probably hiding,” Blaine mumbled. He could hardly blame Kurt if he was hiding.

“Did you say something dear?” His mother asked, but she wasn’t looking at him, she was busy searching the crowd for someone.

“Nope,” Baine answered. “And to answer your first question, I have not spoken to Michelle yet.” He hadn’t really expected to see Michelle at all this weekend. She was the bride, and he was a cousin she spoke to once in a while at weddings or the biennial Anderson Family Reunions. “I assumed she had a lot of things to do before tomorrow.”

Before his mother could respond, Michelle appeared before him and practically shrieked his name. “Blaine! I have been looking all over for you!”

“Hi Michelle,” He gave her a friendly hug. “Congratulations on your big day.”

“Thanks!” Blaine thought she might be a little drunk.

“Mom said you were looking for me?”

“Oh! Yes! Seb come here!” She shouted across the room and Sebastian appeared next to her. Blaine rolled his eyes. If his mother had enlisted Michele to assist her misguided attempts to fix him up he was going to be pretty pissed off. “Blaine I think you’ve met David’s cousin Sebastian?”

He acknowledged Sebastian with a terse nod. “Of course.”

“That’s great, that’s so great! Did you know Sebastian sang in high school too?” Blaine shook his head, he wasn’t sure he did. “Well he did, and he’s got a great voice, and I want you two to sing a duet at the reception tomorrow! Won’t that be amazing?”

Blaine felt a hand at his hip. “Did I miss something amazing?” It was Kurt.

“Yes!” Michelle squawked. “Blaine and Sebastian just agreed to sing a duet tomorrow at the reception!”

Klaine Advent 2021 Word: obligation Word Count: 543 Warnings: none

When Kurt woke again it took him a few minutes to realize that he was in the bed alone. The room was dark, but he could hear the shower running, and a sliver of light spilled under the bathroom door. Kurt swung his legs off the bed as he sat up, swiping his phone off of the bedside table so he could check the time; it felt like it had to be midnight.

“6:15?” he said aloud. “Weird.” They had an obligation that night, a cocktail party taking place after the rehearsal dinner, but Kurt was pretty sure they didn’t have to be there until 8:30, or maybe later. He had slept hard and he was a little groggy. He did manage to turn on the light, so Blaine would know he was awake when he finished showering.

Kurt was steaming his dress pants when Blaine finally exited the bathroom, wrapped in one of the fluffy hotel robes.

“Oh hey, you’re awake. Good.”

“Honestly I don’t know what woke me. I feel like I’ve been asleep for days.” Kurt shook his head and went back to steaming his pants. “It’s very weird to think we just got here this morning. I think I’ve lost my sense of time, between the travel and the naps.” Kurt laughed, and he could hear Blaine chuckle behind him as he moved around the room. He turned around to see Blaine holding sweatpants and a t-shirt. “Do you know if there’s going to be food at this thing, or are we on our own before the drinking starts?” Blaine was standing in the doorway to the bathroom, his eyes looking everywhere in the room but at Kurt. “Blaine? Is everything okay?”

Blaine twisted the clothes he was holding, but finally looked at Kurt. “Yeah? Yes. Everything’s okay.” He paused. “Why?”

“You just seem really nervous,” Kurt said. “I didn’t say anything offensive in my sleep, did I?” He winked, hoping Blaine would know he was joking. In total contrast to the peaceful sleeping Blaine from this afternoon, current Blaine seemed to be experiencing a fully formed anxiety attack.

“Nothing like that, no. I think I need to, um, apologize to you. For this afternoon.”

“What for?”

“Well, apparently I am a very clingy sleeper,” Blaine said, his face turning pink, “And at some point during our, uh, nap, I think I was completely wrapped around you, and I just - I’m sorry about that. I --”

“Oh my god Blaine,” Kurt interrupted him, waving away Blaine’s nervous confession. “Please don’t worry about that. It was a nap. I think I woke up at some point and we were all tangled together. It made more sense to just go back to sleep.” Kurt shook his head kindly. “Please don’t worry about it,” he repeated.

Blaine seemed only half convinced. “You’re sure?”

“Absolutely,” Kurt said. He didn’t want Blaine to be worried about this. They were sharing that bed for two nights. “But if you really want to make it up to me, we can order some of that fancy room service so we don’t spend all night drinking on a couple of empty stomachs?”

Blaine laughed, and he seemed to relax. “Yes, of course. You pick whatever looks good.”

Klaine Advent 2021 Word: ceiling Word Count: 158 Warnings: none

Kurt blinked. He recalled showering quickly and crawling into bed next to Blaine, taking time to watch him sleep for a moment. Had that been creepy? It didn’t seem so at the time. Blaine had been a ball of anxiety since they’d arrived at the hotel, but in sleep he looked so peaceful (beautiful too, Kurt had thought).

Kurt blinked again, awake now and staring at the ceiling, Blaine Anderson wrapped around him as if Kurt were his personal body pillow. Kurt’s arm was even resting lightly across Blaine’s back, holding him in place. It must have happened while they were sleeping, innocently enough. Maybe Blaine was just a cuddly sleeper? It was nice.

Blaine would probably be embarrassed if he realized. He had been trying to be so careful, and respectful - which Kurt completely appreciated, considering they weren’t actually boyfriends, or even friends at all, really. Kurt hoped they could be friends once they could stop pretending.

Klaine Advent 2021 Word: silence Word Count: 113 Warnings: none

Blaine couldn’t open his eyes.

They weren’t stuck or anything, but he knew that if he opened his eyes he would discover that at some point during his afternoon nap his body had become entwined with Kurt Hummel’s, and if he opened his eyes he would have to acknowledge that in a conscious way. With his eyes closed, he had no idea if Kurt was awake or asleep, or if he knew that Blaine was currently fully, and inappropriately, pressed completely up against him. No, if Blaine never opened his eyes he could simply lay there in the silence, his face squished into Kurt’s ribcage, until someone came looking for one of them.

Day 9: hubris

It’s not long into the afternoon before Kurt begins to regret his morning hubris. It turns out five-year-olds are a little young for the climbing wall, and half of the kids in the post-lunch group are too small to reach the hand and footholds, so Kurt and Peter spend most of the allotted time catching little humans when they lose their footing and hang in the air shrieking in a mix of excitement and fear. One ambitious little one makes it all the way to the top, then pees himself before he can get down.

The second group are older kids, eleven and twelve, and things start out well enough. They get about halfway through the bunch without incident. Kurt watches one of the boys reach the top, and he’s getting ready to pull the rope tight so the boy can belay down the wall and turns to glance at Peter’s progress fixing the next kid with the harness. When he turns back to his charge everything shifts to slow motion; the rope goes tight, the boy kicks away from the wall clutching his stomach, throwing up all over the floor below him, narrowly missing Kurt’s shoes.

“Fuuu -” Kurt slaps a hand over his mouth, and he and Peter together get the kid down and hand him off to one of the parents who came with the party. Peter calls the maintenance crew, so luckily Kurt doesn’t have to do any clean up. Peter does give him five minutes to run to the locker room and do a clean up check on himself. After confirming that he isn’t covered in anything disgusting, Kurt heads back to the climbing wall. They have three more parties to do.

Kurt walks past the concession, it’s busy but not insanely so which makes him feel less guilty about ditching for the day. He notices The Cute Guy sitting alone at one of the tables and stops to watch him. Kurt contemplates just walking over and saying hello, introducing himself and letting something happen. It was something he had just started doing in New York, to mixed results, but in New York he knew the guys he approached were gay; he’s entirely not sure about this one. And he doesn’t want to be late getting back to help Peter. Kurt takes a deep breath, and heads back to the climbing wall..

The maintenance guys are leaving when Kurt arrives, so he’s not late, and at least now the mats smell like bleach instead of the alternative. Peter is talking to a guy who looks familiar, and when Kurt gets closer he recognizes him as one of The Cute Guy’s friends. The short dark one, not the blond.

“Hi Kurt,” Peter says, drawing him into their conversation. “This is Nick, he’s our next party.”

Day 8: quixotic

It’s entirely possible that Kurt’s initial ideas about helping a bunch of children climb a wall were somewhat quixotic. He’d imagined giggling eight-year-olds, all perfectly capable of following instructions, patiently waiting their turn to get in the harness and get on the wall. He’d cheer them on, offering words of encouragement as they clambered up the eight foot structure then jumped down, safely tethered to some adult experienced in the supervision of such things.

When he shows up at the climbing wall to meet the climb leader Kurt tries not to be concerned, He looks like he’s the same age as Kurt; his name is Peter, and he assures Kurt that he’s been working these kinds of parties since he was sixteen, and that it’s all under control.

“I’ll be putting the kids in their harness, so you don’t have to worry about that,” Peter tells him. “Your job will be pretty simple, you’ll have a safety harness on and the belay line will be hooked to it. When the kid is climbing the wall you just have to keep an eye on them, and keep your hands on the rope in case they slip or - more likely - kick at the wall and try to swing through the air.”

“They do that?” He did not want to be responsible for sending anyone’s little angel to the emergency room.

“Sometimes, with the older ones. You have to be paying attention.” Peter goes over a few more rules, like how to tell if a kid is freaking out but too scared to say anything, or what to do if they start crying and freeze and can’t get down. Luckily the wall isn’t that high; Kurt is pretty sure that both he and Peter can reach any kid who doesn’t want to push off and slide down. Parties are forty five minutes, enough for all the kids to go up and down at least once, more if it’s a smaller party. They get fifteen minutes to reset all the harnesses and check the ropes before the next party starts.

The first party arrives, and before Kurt can come up for air it’s lunchtime, and he’s exhausted.

“That was great Kurt, thanks,” Peter tells him as they reset the gear for the afternoon groups. “I hope it wasn’t too much?”

It had gone well, Kurt thought. They only had one major crying incident during the party just before lunch, and Peter seemed willing to chalk that up to the kids being hungry. “It certainly makes the day go faster than working the concession,” Kurt tells him. “And I guess the kids weren’t too difficult.”

“Would you be interested in doing this again? Covering the party shift?”

“Maybe?” Kurt answers. “How often do these get scheduled?” He didn’t mind the work, but there is something about standing behind a candy counter all day, doing very little for most of the hours, that has satisfied his sense of what a summer job in Ohio should involve, and he isn’t sure he wants to give that up entirely. Kurt might complain about it generally, but it’s also a lot easier than changing oil and swapping carburetors.

“Well, most of the time it’s Tanner’s job,” Peter tells him. “But every once in a while - like today, he can’t make it. It would probably just be covering the occasional shift, I think?”

“Okay then, yes. My schedule and contact info is posted on the wall in the office with everyone else's. Call on me any time.”

Kurt is not going to ask Sam anything. If he did then for sure he would tell Mercedes, and she would tell Tina - they seemed to be thick as thieves since they’d both come back for the summer; and if Tina knew then Mike would know then on and on and on until he was getting a call from Rachel in LA in the middle of the night asking him why he hadn’t called to tell her he had a boyfriend. Kurt doesn’t even have any inkling that this guy is even gay! Much less available. Or even interested. For all he knows they were staring at him because he wasn’t wearing regulation head covering while working in the food service industry, and they were preparing to report him to the Ohio health department. Kurt is going to have to face the stark reality that he is not going to meet the man of his dreams working at the Lima City Athletic Complex.

Thursday morning Kurt is about to count his register, cursing Mercedes just a little and mentally preparing himself for the coming onslaught. Thursday is frequently birthday party day, and that means oodles of tiny children running everywhere while harried parents, siblings, and babysitters chase them from event to event, swearing and frequently in tears. Kurt will never understand why people deliberately make things hard for themselves.

He shakes the thought away just as Ben - the event manager for the complex - appears in front of his counter. “Kurt Hummel?”

Kurt nods. “The one and only.”

Ben kind of looks like a skinnier version of The Rock, only younger and with a more attractive face, so when he offers his hand for Kurt to shake, Kurt doesn’t hesitate. “Great. We have a bit of a scheduling problem, and Becky suggested you help out. The kid who usually helps with the rock climbing wall called in sick, and we have a half dozen climbing birthday parties today. Would you be comfortable helping out for the day?”

Kurt considers for a long minute. Does he really want to give up his cushy job behind the candy counter to cycle through a hundred or so small children hanging from ropes? “I’d love to,” he tells Ben. Anything to get away from the post-candy kid barf that always accompanies these days. “What do you need me to do?”

One adjustment Kurt has to make to being in Lima for the summer turns out to be living with Finn again. Kurt loves him of course, and is not so secretly grateful that Finn is around to keep an eye on their parents, but sometimes his existence is challenging, and Kurt is out of practice trying to make sense of Finn’s occasionally odd syntax.

Today, though, Kurt wants to get information out of him, and the best way to get Finn to talk is to feed him, and then ask questions while he’s eating and his guard is down. Since his dad and Carol are out on a date night, he told Finn he’d make anything he wanted for dinner that night, and he requested chicken piccata.

Finn turned the basement into a gym after Kurt moved out, and he’s down there working out while Kurt prepares dinner. Kurt starts water to boil spaghetti, then pulls out the string beans so he can snip them while the chicken is cooking. He’s gathering all of the ingredients for the sauce when Finn lumbers up the stairs, his workout apparently finished. He’s a little sweaty and Kurt hopes he leaves before his post workout smell travels all the way to where Kurt is standing.

“Do you need any help?” Finn asks. Kurt instantly feels bad that he’s snapped back to exasperated brother mode already, Finn really does mean well. “I could zealot the lemon.”

Kurt blinks. “Zealot the...what?” Just because he means well doesn’t mean he always makes sense.

Finn picks up the Microplane and a lemon. “Zealot the lemon. Mom always asks me to do it when she’s cooking.”

“I think you mean zest, Finn.”

“Do I?” Finn looks thoughtful, as if he’s considering whether Kurt could be right. “Huh.”

“That’s okay Finn, I’ve got it,” Kurt tells him. “Why don’t you go shower and with any luck dinner will be ready when you come down. Finn gives Kurt two thumbs up and wanders out of the kitchen.

When they sit down for dinner Finn is appropriately impressed with Kurt’s cooking, and digs in enthusiastically. Kurt waits for him to help himself to seconds before he starts asking questions.

“So I was wondering, those guys you were playing basketball with the other day, do you know them?

With Carol away, Finn is still chewing when he responds. “What guys?”

Kurt bites back his impatience, he doesn’t really even know what information he’s fishing for. “When me and Mercedes and Tina came to watch you play. You were playing against some guys, one of them kept running past you and scoring?”

Finn frowns, looking annoyed, but he takes another bite of the chicken. “Oh that guy, he’s really annoying, but I don’t really know them. They’re around sometimes, I think we’ve played against them before.” Finn chews and winds some spaghetti around his fork. “I think one of them is named Jeff? But I don’t know for sure.” Kurt is about to write off the whole ‘interrogate Finn’ evening as a bust, when Finn adds, “I think Sam knows them though, or at least I think he hangs out with them in the weight room. You should ask him.”

Day 5: austere

“Kurt you have to come with us.” Mercedes is checking her appearance in the little mirror Kurt hung up on the wall just behind the counter (Kurt had hung it there the first week so he wouldn’t have to keep running to the bathroom to check if his hat was tilted in the wrong direction).

“Yeah Kurt, it’ll be fun,” Tina adds, pulling her smock over her head. “All those guys, running up and down the court, sweating and jumping.” Tina turns and grins. “I do love the jumping.”

Kurt sighs. Finn and Mike and Sam have been playing pickup basketball games every day on one of the courts, and both of his friends have wanted to go - Tina to watch her boyfriend perform public acts of physical dexterity, and Mercedes - well she’s been pretending pretty hard that she isn’t interested in anything that Sam is up to, but Kurt knows better.

“Fine.” Kurt relents, feigning annoyance. “I suppose if I’m going to have a dry summer I can at least support you both in your adventures.”

“Dry summer? Did you give you give up drinking? Not that we’re technically old enough, but -”

“He means boys Tina,” Mercedes interrupts. “Kurt is suggesting that since we are back in Ohio - the location of his interminable high school loneliness, that there is little chance that he’ll find his ‘summer romance’. But I think he’s just not looking hard enough.”

“I am looking plenty hard, Ms. Jones,” Kurt insists. “I'm just a realist. Not all of us are lucky enough to have an old flame in our back pocket, ready to relight the fire any time we drop into town.” Mercedes glares at him at that, but she doesn’t bother denying it.

Once the replacement shift arrives, they head to their respective locker rooms to freshen up. Kurt can’t help but lament the locker room decor. The austere high school gym aesthetic really leaves a lot to be desired, but compared to the designer chic he’d gotten used to during his first year in New York it’s downright depressing.

Tina leads them to the basketball courts, which is in a section of the complex Kurt hasn’t been to yet. In all honesty, he only has a mild interest in anything about the complex outside of his job. Other than the concession and the locker room he really hasn’t bothered to explore much, although he thinks he’d like to try the rock climbing wall. They have to climb some stairs to get to the seating area, and Kurt is both surprised and impressed at the facility once they get a good look at it.

The seating is raised above the courts, with a pretty good view of the nearest court. Tina explains that the large floor area is adjustable, but that three nights a week they have open basketball and all you need to do is sign up. She goes into detail about things like court size and volleyball nets and the rules of 3 on 3 basketball (because that’s apparently what their friends are playing), but Kurt zones out and gets comfortable. All of the courts are full, some with guys playing very intensely, some appear to be just goofing off (he thinks Tina said something about a horse, but he’s not sure what that mens, and there are women as well as men scattered throughout.

Eventually though he just sits back and watches their friends play against some people Kurt doesn’t know. It’s not an unpleasant way to pass some time, Sam and Mike appear to be pretty good, and while Finn is pretty slow getting back and forth, Kurt watches him sink a lot of baskets from what Tina explains is the ‘three point line.’

Kurt’s attention wanders, but at some point he realizes that the boys have new opponents, all of whom are much shorter than Finn, Mike and Sam. The littlest one is running past Finn for the third time, scoring easily as Finn gets turned around, when Kurt recognizes him as the cute guy from two days ago. The other two guys are obviously his friends. Kurt sits up a little straighter and focuses on the game.

“That your boy, Kurt?”

“Your boy??” Tina leans around Mercedes, her eyes wide.

“I have no boy. He just...he’s got...I like his shorts,” he finishes, somewhat lamely.

Tina and Mercedes both throw their heads back and laugh.

Day 4: Tenacious

“Oh? Hot date at the basketball hoop?” Kurt has no idea what’s come over him.

“What?” The guy is completely pink now, and he turns to look at the table Kurt had been admiring only moments before. “No, um, just here with friends.” He jerks a thumb over his shoulder toward the cute guys. Kurt successfully bites back a sigh.

“Well you might need one of them to help you carry this stuff,” Kurt tells him, indicating the floppy cardboard trays currently stuffed with three hot dogs, three pops, three french fries, a popcorn and the box of candy. “I don’t think these are all that sturdy.”

The boy shrugs and stacks the trays on top of each other, tenaciously holding them at the top of the stack with his chin. “I think I got it,” he grits out through his teeth. “Thanks.”

Kurt watches as the guy scoots over to his friends, miraculously managing not to spill even one popped kernel. He’s also surprised (and somewhat relieved) to see that rather than wearing baggy too long shorts that after six days at this job Kurt has decided should be outlawed, the cute guy is wearing well fitted gym shorts that decidedly flatter some nicely muscular legs.

Mercedes slaps him on the arm. “What are you doing?”

“What? Nothing? I’m not -”

“You aren’t supposed to be using my register. You know Tina will drag us both if there are any mistakes.”

Kurt exhales. “I only rang up the one sale, it’s fine.” Mercedes looks slightly placated, so he goes on. “And where did you two go? You should have at least warned me you were going to disappear.”

Mercedes points to two 100-packs of drink cups. “Tina is bringing the trays,” she tells him, then steps around where he’s standing to unpack the supplies. Kurt wanders back to his station, having been momentarily distracted from watching his new crush manhandle his order. He and his friends are digging into their lunch, talking. Kurt knows he shouldn’t be staring, but he wants to know more about this guy. Kurt finds himself caught staring when at the exact moment he’s cursing the fact that their table is too far away from him to eavesdrop, all three guys turn and look at Kurt.

Day 3: Ubiquitous

Kurt isn’t sure if he prefers when the concession counter is busy or slow. When it’s busy that means there are usually summer camps full of nine year olds all shouting for different candy at the same time, then spilling their popcorn all the way back to the tables like uncontrolled Hansel’s or Gretl’s; but at least the time goes quickly. When it’s slow they have to restock the food and supplies, but after the hairnet discussion Tina insisted he work the candy register, so it’s pretty simple - he doesn’t even have to reload the hot dog rollers. And when it’s slow he has a lot more time to people watch.

Not that there’s all that much to look at. Almost everyone is wearing some sort of unflattering athletic wear, and unfortunately, slightly baggy, slightly too long shorts appear to be ubiquitous among the young men in Lima. They really don’t look good on anyone.

Kurt is finishing up a transaction for two pops and an extra large box of peanut M&Ms when he notices two guys sitting at the table nearest the concession. They aren’t bad looking, and one of them is wearing a Marc Jacobs t-shirt, so at least they have taste. They’re kind of cute, so Kurt watches them for a while. They aren’t doing anything, really, just talking, laughing a little. Kurt doesn’t really spend a lot of time wondering if any of the guys hanging around the complex are gay - he knows it’s possible, but it is Lima after all. But the blond one has possibilities; sometimes it’s nice to enjoy a little eye candy.

“Excuse me? Hi.” Kurt had been so lost in thought that he hadn’t noticed both Tina and Mercedes had walked away from the counter, and he’s startled out of his idle daydream by a customer at the other register. “Are you open?”

“Oh, sorry! Yes. Of course.” Kurt rushes over to Mercedes’ register to come face to face with what might be the cutest guy he has seen in maybe ever. After a pause that lasts entirely too long, he manages to sputter out, “What can I help you with?”

The guy seems to take just as long as Kurt did to react, but eventually he smiles at Kurt, a pretty pink flush appearing high on his cheeks, but all he says is “Hi.”

Kurt nods. “Hi? Can I get you something?” He wants to flirt with this guy, but manages to hold back. New York had been such a change that he’s become less guarded about it in general. But - Lima.

“Oh, right, yes,” the guy bobs his head in the most adorable shy gesture, but continues to speak. “Can I get three hot dog specials, a medium popcorn and some Sno Caps?”

Kurt can’t stop himself. “Sno Caps, wow. I don’t get a lot of Sno Cap people in here.” Apparently, however, he doesn’t actually have any game at all. He tries to focus on gathering the order.

The guy shrugs. “Oh, they aren’t for me.”

Day 2: Judicious

When it turns out that the hiring process isn’t all that rigorous - the complex is just looking for nominally responsible warm bodies to cover all the positions, Kurt, Mercedes and Tina start their new jobs two days later.

“Kurt it is a state regulation,” Tina pleads with him. “If you’re going to work in food service you need to cover your head so hair doesn’t get in peoples’ food.”

“I am absolutely not wearing a hair net, unless it’s for a role in Hairspray. I’ll quit first.” Kurt touches the perfectly set swoop on top of his head, a determined look on his face. He works hard on his hair. Mercedes knows better than to fight with him about this, but for some reason Tina is still arguing about it. At least they don’t have uniforms. “Besides, Steve said I can wear this -” he sets his favorite newsboy style cap on his head. “He said I can wear any hat I want as long as I check with him first.” Kurt can work with hats, but he has to be judicious in selecting hats that are appropriate for the athletic complex. He needs to look smashing in it, of course, and it needs to be able to stand up to the rigors of working food service and cleaning out locker rooms without getting ruined. He thinks Tina is just jealous that he looks so good in hats, and she opens her mouth to object again, but thankfully someone walks up to the snack counter and interrupts.

“Hey little brother, cool hat.” It’s Finn.

“What are you doing here Finn? Don’t you have to work?” Kurt could have sworn he heard Finn leave with Burt to go to the garage this morning. He normally doesn’t mind Finn being around, but he is going to a readjustment period to get used to having him around all the time again.

“Yeah I do. I mean, some days, but not today. Thought I would check this place out.” Kurt waited for him to go on. “I’m meeting Sam here to do some weightlifting.”

Kurt doesn’t turn to look at Mercedes, but out of the corner of his eye he can see her lift her head to hear what Finn has to say. Mercedes and Sam broke up before graduation, and she swears she isn’t interested in rekindling anything, but Kurt also knows they hung out together only a few days after she got back to Lima, so honestly anything is possible.

“Well when you are done sweating or lifting or whatever it is you are doing here, you should bring Sam by. I haven’t seen him since last fall.” Finn says he will, then ambles off to wherever he’s going. Kurt turns to look at Mercedes, who is filling the candy display with bags of Swedish Fish.

“Not a word about that, Kurt Hummel,” she directs, so he backs off. For now.
