there’s a moment in The Little Prince where the narrator holds the little prince while he’s crying and realizes he can’t really reach him anymore. he tries to comfort him by promising practical things: drawing a muzzle for the sheep, a fence for the flower, but he also realizes that sadness is something deeply private. “it is such a secret place, the land of tears.”

the prince is crying because he loves his flower and is afraid something might happen to her. and that’s what makes the scene so painful but also hopeful. the sadness exists because there is love. if he didn’t love the flower, there would be nothing to lose.

the narrator can’t fix the pain, but he stays with him. sometimes that’s all love can do: sit beside someone while they’re in that “land of tears,” even if you can’t follow them there.

love makes us soo vulnerable it can be scary but it also gives meaning to things . and even in all that sadness there’s something hopeful about the fact that someone is there trying to comfort you holding you while you cry.
