Holy Plotly Widgets Batman!

These are some amazing widgets that integrate plotlyblog graphs with IPython Notebooks. The widget system in IPython adds some incredible possibilities for visualizing and interacting with data.

These notebooks from Plotly CPO Chris Parmer (chriddyp on github) flex quite a few of the data interaction muscles:

An interactive time series data slicer

A fractal tree generator with interactive inputs

A MOTHERFUCKING ETCH-A-SKETCH! (I don't know why I'm so excited for an in notebook etch a sketch, but it just makes me happy)

Whenever I see examples like these, I am inspired to rethink/rework how I show data and how I can make it more interactive and friendly. So for the sake of better data interaction and visualization, you should check these notebooks out now!

Today, I sat back, turned up the volume, and jammed to the sweet sweet sounds of the Keplerphone. This IPython Notebook shows how Brian McFee (@functiontelechy) and Jonathan Marmor (@jonathanmarmor) used Kepler light curves to make midi music.

I recommend K02922.01 in the Purvi scale. It made my dog howl in delight... or maybe it was the opposite of delight. Either way, this is an awesome mix of science and art that is... awesome (I'm awesome with words!). And thanks to an IPython notebook, we have a behind the scenes view of how it came together.

Some great notebooks from Michael Lovci of @YeoLab providing an overview of flotilla, a tool for biologists and bioinformaticists to analyze RNA-seq data. These were presented at his talk at #biodata14.

flotilla takes full advantage of IPython's interactive widget capability making for some beautiful and useful visualizations. (Of course, when I was adding the link to the flotilla github, I saw that @olgabot of prettyplotlib fame is a core contributor, so no wonder it looks snazzy)

What a great set of Notebooks from Dr. Joshua Vaughan (@Doc_Vaughan) for his Mechanical Vibrations course an the University of Louisiana Lafayette. These are another great example of using notebooks to help teach, visualize, experiment with, and ultimately solidify concepts.

There are also some great videos available online to go along with the notebooks. Awesome job for providing useful and open educational material!

A very nice notebook from the Mirador team discussing the data visualization and exploration product Mirador from Fathom (@fathominfo) and SabetiLab.

A fantastic tool to keep in your data analysis utility belt (right next to your shark repellent bat-spray). They are just finishing up the Mirador Open Data Competition. I can't wait to see some of the results of that and the associate art project!
