What I learned during one year of online school, and what another year may look like
Just some raw facts
first and foremost, pay attention in class, or at least try to. I spent the majority of my classes browsing through meaningless memes on Pinterest or chatting with my friends, and I regretted it as soon as exams came around.
try doing something physical doing your class, as this reduces the chances of you drifting off and/or losing focus (I personally chose to doodle mindlessly, nothing that involved too much brain power and focus)
all your organization systems fail you
and finding a planning system takes months, but once you find it, STICK TO IT. mine was a hybrid weekly and daily planner with absolutely no other spreads (except a separate calendar). efficient and less time-consuming to make.
you feel motivated in random bursts and will plan out the entirety of your remaining year and then forget about that plan the next day
routines seem appealing as you try to get your life together from the ever-increasing slumps but then your realize they just make everything even more monotonous that they already are
sticky notes are the shit. like seriously. I had sticky notes in my textbooks, past papers, study notes, and even other sticky notes. they’re versatile and a great way to jot down information quickly and right on top of where you want it (a paragraph on your textbook, for examples)
do not rely on just your textbooks, especially since it’s 10 times harder to ask for help (and by the time you get around to meeting your teacher, you might actually forget about it). ask anyone around you for help – friends, family – and use all the resources you have.
online learning resources are astronomically underrated. while I was struggling in multiple subjects all by myself, I decided to expand the resources I used for studying. My favourites through my senior year were:
OpenStax (FREE textbooks on a variety of subjects groups, by Rice University)
Khan Academy (need I say more?)
Crash Course on youtube, especially for AP Exams (I’m not a part of the US education system btw, and the resources I’m mentioning are applicable to everything)
online pdf versions of textbooks
tons of youtube channels (too many to list here,)
use your phone/computer’s night light. trust me it works wonders. plus, it’s cheaper than blue light glasses if you already own a phone/computer (most have it built in). also known as a blue light filter/yellow light.
a little bit of gratitude each week will help you keep your sanity (coming from a former skeptic)
sleepless nights will be common, especially with all the screen time, but you’ll learn to live with that.
and mental health will just go down the drain
but it will all be okay
you get both your grades and confidence high
i speak from experience
How to remain productive with online classes:
A few tips from a broke neuro-divergent academic
Try and wake up early, and go to bed early too. I’m not saying get up at 5 (unless that’s you’re thing) but sleeping into noon is a productivity blackhole. I go for 8 or 8:30, generally, but that’s just what works for me.
Get dressed for the day. I’m not talking like, jeans and a business casual outfit, but a clean pair of sweatpants, fresh underwear, and a new shirt can really put you in the mood for a new morning.
Have a workspace. Whether it be the kitchen table, a desk, a spot on the floor with a lap desk, have a place that’s dedicated to your work. Have items that signify that workspace too, like your book, planner, laptop, lamp, whatever. It can help you get into the zone, being in that space.
Have a morning drink. I choose earl grey tea with honey and cream, but black coffee, herbal tea, lemon water, whatever works for you is awesome, as long as itll wake you up and start your day.
To do lists. To do lists and to do lists and more to do lists. I have three. One is a post it weekly planner deal (3.99 at a local grocery store). it’s a weekly spread already set up, and if you’re anything like me, its really hard to set up a weekly spread. Then I have an app called Ike. I have a daily to do list I write on that app, and then I have four more to-do lists of what I have to for each specific class.
Spread out your assignments. Don’t overwhelm yourself. If you’re professors are like mine, and have the due date for each module as Sunday at midnight. What I do is spread out all my assignments from Monday to Saturday, and I leave Sunday blank, so anything I didn’t do that week, I finish on Sunday. It works for me, it might work for you.
Have a folder for each class, and a notebook for each class. I hate spending money, I’m broke as hell, sono al verde as the Italians say, but a 0.99 cent folder and a 0.25 cent notebook can do wonders for motivating one to fill them up.
Study with a drink. Tea, water, coffee, whatever, but my go to is generally a warm drink. I cannot study if I’m cold, I get tired and groggy, so warm socks, a robe, and a hot drink really keep me going.
Take breaks. Make time for your hobbies, for something fun. Working without stopping absolutely destroys my motivation, and let me tell you, when I feel like that, an episode of Avatar and a snack gets me right back on the wagon.
Do self check ins. Does your back hurt? Are you sad? Stressed? Do you have to pee? Are you hungry? Never put your homework over your health. You won’t be able to get anything done well anyway if you’ve got those blocks.
Most importantly, get enough sleep. I beg of you. Sleep is so important, and it’s the game changer, at least to me. We as students have such an amazing opportunity to get more sleep than we ever have before during the year. Take advantage of that.
this is a breakdown of how i go about doing research for my essays! do keep in mind i am an arts student, so i don’t know how well this method carries over into other disciplines. check out my other guides to writing essays here and here!
my first free downloadable planner and i can’t wait to share it with you >< i got the inspiration to make this from my first quote of 2021 - “the sky is the limit”. maybe you missed out something in 2020 but never let that put a damper on your hopes and goals for 2021.
you can find the link here: shorturl.at/ejwz7
please use it and share your thoughts with me. i am happy to see it being used by you or whom you know might like this planner page i made ^^ if you can’t access the link, you can send me a message and i will directly send the link to you.
do you have any idea for the next downloadable planner page i should do? please let me know! ^^
self-care for quarantine 2021
Hi, it’s werelivingarts! My school was shut down once last year, and I recognize that both of mental and physical health got much worse (staying up over midnight and eating so much unhealthy food). I took me almost a semester back in face-to-face school to cope with normal flow again. ☺️
Now my country is having another school shut down, I’m going back to virtual learning and I’m determined to be better than last year (yes, it’s the second year of COVID-19 now). Above is a list of things I want to remind myself in quarantine, and I want to share it with you all too!
Stay safe and healthy, wear mask and sanitize your hands frequently! ❤️💙💜
Since I’m not studying at the moment, I thought I’d take the time to make this mindmap to give you guys some suggestions for how to study. Let me know if anything here is particularly helpful! Have a wonderful weekend everyone! 😘
An Overview of Note-Taking Styles
Note-taking is one of the most essential skills a student should master. It allows you to record and review information to be used in the future. But what’s the best way to do so? Here’s an overview of note-taking styles that can help you maximize your learning!
small reminder that today is sunday.
make sure to double check for assignments due tonight or monday morning!
yooo everybody. my mom and i were goofing around and found this seriously FUCKED UP site. all your information, (phone number, nam, address even) is available for 2.99. like everything. please watch this video on how to remove it. (im not sure if it’s there for minors, but if you’ve ever owned/rented a house you’re definitely there. it’s worth checking it out to make sure.)
video on how to remove information. : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPFLagxnDsA
fucked up website: http://www.spokeo.com/
also, if you’ve lived in more than one place/state it has you multiple times, remove all of your profile things. (it had my mom 4 times, all over our state. even from when she lived in a house 9 years ago.)
psa over.
SIGNAL BOOST THIS SHIT
YES THERE ARE MINORS ON HERE ALSO I JUST CHECKED ME AND IT HAS MY ~PERSONAL~ INFO ON THERE
This is very concerning. I just spent the last ten minutes removing my entire family (including my 14-year-old sister) from the site.
Cool Mom Tech has a guide on how to take your information off the site if for some reason you can’t watch the above video.
Just to inform everyone, it’s American only, but it’s real. I’ve found 3 of my friends already with this sight and the only reason I knew it was them was because I happen to have their address. PLEASE CONFIRM IF YOU ARE ON THIS SITE AND IF YOU ARE, REMOVE YOURSELF. NOW.
I’m screaming internally because I just searched up a handful of my friends who live in America.. and found every single one of them without fail. This is scary.

aka a 5 tip guide to self-studying while in quarantine
hello, friends! i know quarantine has been hard on us students especially, so i wanted to make a little guide on how i’m surprisingly doing okay with keeping up on my work / turning in assignments on time in college.
make a to do list
making a list is your first step to success. i know, personally, that if i don’t make a list on what needs to be done, nothing will get done lol. seeing my goals laid out on a physical sheet of paper makes me more motivated to do it. so, for example, if i know i have a literary theory forum posting due that day, i will mark it down. just mark down every goal you want to do, big or small
i don’t actually do everything at once
even though we now have our goals laid out, i don’t make myself sit at the kitchen table or my desk doing homework for 6+ hours at a time. i make sure i take breaks and eat lots of snacks (hehe). i found out the hard way that if i don’t spread out my workload, i will overwhelm myself like 15 minutes into my homework so… don’t be like me. LOL
use the pomodoro technique
if you don’t know that the technique is, it’s where you break up your work load into 25 minute intervals. in between the intervals, you take a short break. i found that this works like a charm and i often do it when studying my mandarin. i take the little breaks to stretch, eat a snack, or text my friends.
listen to instrumentals or watch study with me videos on youtube
i don’t know about you guys, but part of the reason that i loved being on my university’s campus so much was that i could do work with friends. seeing them motivated in return motivated me. so, as a substitute, i’ve recently fallen into the hole of watching study with me videos on youtube. i love watching the youtubers concentrate. it just inspires me, idk. maybe it’ll inspire you too!
another thing i do is listen to instrumentals, especially video game songs. here’s a link to a playlist i made and that i heavily listen to while doing my literature homework!
treat it like a regular school day
wake up on time to shower, get yourself dressed to the best, etc. treat it like you’re going outside. if you look good, you feel good, thus you’re going to work well. get into a routine and don’t mess up your sleep schedule! self care is just as important / even more important than school and grades.
make sure you go to bed at a regular time too
ALSO don’t be like me and don’t drink 7 iced coffees a day. drink water, please, i beg. i literally shake if i don’t get coffee.
that’s it! these are all of my tips on how to study like me, lol! i hope your self-studying is going amazingly and if you ever need to vent about your struggles (let’s face it we all will have ups and downs with this online business) feel free to message me! i’m here to give a shoulder to lean on.

10 Tips for Studying STEM
Hello! These are my personal tips for anyone wishing to pursue studies in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) course, whether it be high school or higher level. After two years of college, these are helpful things that I’ve picked up.
1. Supplement your learning. The textbook/reading is great for getting direct information on your subject, but for some people (like me) simply reading information doesn’t cut it. Find videos online (I find YouTube channels like CrashCourse or Minute Physics to be extremely helpful), find animations of complicated processes (especially for physics), and other websites that explain things in a more elementary way. That being said…
2. Summarize readings. Textbook readings can be extremely dense in STEM, a lot of times with important information compacted into mere paragraphs. I suggest jotting down a sentence or two after each paragraph summarizing what you read. It’s a great way to see if you truly understand what you just read. If your reading has equations, jot down each equation (or better yet keep an ongoing list) and what it is used for. This can be helpful later in homework.
3. Keep your notebook looking spiffy. People often underestimate the power of an organized notebook (and you don’t have to have immaculate handwriting to make this possible). Keep a table of contents at the front so you can easily find each topic. Color coding is encouraged! Also, it’s very helpful not just to write down only what the teacher/professor has written on the board. Make your own notes summarizing what they are saying.
4. Do homework/study with friends. This is extremely helpful in identifying what areas you need to review. Try to explain topics or homework problems to each other. It’s much more beneficial to try to teach a topic than to simply review it on your own. (Google Dr. Saundra McGuire’s videos to learn more about metacognition and how techniques like this can help you immensely.)
5. Don’t underestimate how writing heavy STEM can be. Often, people assume that because STEM is not part of the humanities that there will be little to no writing. This is not correct. Your writing abilities in STEM will go a long way. One of the most important aspects of STEM is communication, and the more refined your writing skills, the further you will go.
6. Refine your presentation skills. For some people, presenting is something they enjoy. For others (me) it is a scary and daunting thing that causes anxiety more than anything else. Unfortunately, in STEM, public speaking is a necessary and useful skill. If you have to do a presentation, start as early as possible. Write down, by hand, everything you are going to say in the presentation. Then, summarize it with bullet points. If you are allowed to have notecards, bring the bullet pointed list. Practice your presentation as many times as possible in front of friends, or even your professor if that is possible. Just remember, your presentation will pass eventually and you will come out alive and well, regardless of how you did.
7. Go to you teacher’s/professor’s office hours. I cannot stress this point enough. Professors are there to help you and if you are struggling, 9 times out of 10 they have helped a student through the exact same issues. They want you to succeed in their class, and I promise that you will not regret talking to them. Worst case scenario is they really don’t know how to answer your question and they will direct you to other resources. It really will not hurt to ask.
8. Practice problems are your friend. Do them until you drop. I have talked to multiple professors about studying for exams, and they all agree that this is by far the most important thing to do. When doing the problems, make sure to explain each step and why you are doing it. This helps a lot more than just brute calculation. Also, if you get the problem wrong, this can help you score some more points by showing the professor you knew what process to do.
9. Make sure to have some time to breath. Amidst all the hard work of studying STEM, make sure you take some time to take care of yourself. Rest, eat, talk to friends, listen to music, watch mindless YouTube videos, go for a walk, take a much-needed nap. Whatever you do, make sure you are able to recharge so that you don’t burn yourself out.
10. If you are doing poorly, see it as an opportunity to grow. Coming from someone who knows all too well what it’s like to fail, see your failure as a chance to change things up. Try different techniques, seek help, and reach out to others in your class. Just because you get a few bad grades in no way means that you are not cut out for the subject. STEM is about discovering the universe, and if that is what you want to do, then nothing can stop you.
WARNING!!!!
People, please be careful. There are also people tracking children and people and putting bids on them based on their profile pictures on whatsapp, tracking and kidnapping them. Especially young children, so please be cautious, especially parents who have their children as their profile pictures.
Please pass this on to everyone so that they are aware of the danger. I don’t how it is all around the world but I know it can’t just be here so please please spread the word. Thank you.
oh my god
I HAVE BEEN GETTING THIS TEXT REGULARLY FOR WEEKS
HOLY SHIT THANK GOD I DIDN’T
I’ve gotten a few of these. Never ever click a link from an unknown number!!!
oh yeahhhh, I saw that on snapchat. it’s been freakin’ EVERYWHERE lately. i haven’t been getting the text, luckily, but im still extremely cautious about it. shit’s scary.
not just girls, but boys and other genders have to be careful as well. this could happen to anyone. please be safe, my friends <3
FOR ALL THE YOUNGER PEOPLE THAT FOLLOW. YOU GUYS ARE SMART. YOU KNOW THIS. BUT JUST IN CASE THERE ARE SOME WHO MIGHT NOT. THAT DOESN’T MAKE YOU NOT SMART, PERHAPS JUST LESS INFORMED.
DO NOT CLICK LINKS IN TEXTS EVER. GO TO ACTUAL WEBSITES FOR ONES YOU RECOGNIZE AND TYPE IN THE URL. OR A BOOKMARK IF YOU HAVE ONE. DON’T CLICK LINKS IN TEXTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA MESSAGES/DMS AND EMAILS. EVEN IF YOU KNOW THE PERSON. TAKE EXTREME CAUTION.
IF YOU’RE GUTS SAYS EH WOULDN’T DO THAT BUDDY. LISTEN.
ALSO SIGNAL BOOST THE HELL OUT OF THIS
I DON’T CARE WHAT YOUR BLOG THEME IS!! REPOST THIS TO SAVE A LIFE!!
some things i’ve learned while studying in quarantine
drink more water instead of more coffee.
weekly goals are bullshit. set yourself 3-day goals. you’ll be less laid-back.
don’t just mindlessly stare at words. before you start studying, know your approach to it. have a plan.
summarizing the concept in your own words is the key part of taking notes. don’t just copy things down, convert them into your own way of talking, your own vocabulary, no matter how dumb and unprofessional it sounds.
don’t let the “studyblr aesthetic” fool you. studying doesn’t have to be pretty. summaries and notes can be messy as long as they’re comprehensible. you can always rewrite and reorganize them later. (honestly, you better do. and you better keep them.)
don’t throw away the papers you’ve solved your problems in. staple them to the fucking textbook. you need to see them constantly. cause you’ll need reminders of how far you’ve came, when you’re feeling discouraged.
don’t be an armchair analyst for your issues. if you have an idea then act on it.
remember: the exact point where it becomes difficult, is where your growth begins. take a deep breath, and try to focus on the paragraph in front of you.
get off your high horse and understand that if you’re a zero, you won’t go to 100 in a couple of days. first, you’ll need to reach 30, then from 30 to 60, and then from 60 to 90. nobody is 100 everyday. that happens very rarely.
you need to have fun everyday. you need to have peaceful time every single day. even on exam night. especially on exam night, actually. so make sure you’ve studied enough so you can have some time to yourself.
once you’re on a roll and in need of some challenge to stay on track, start writing down your studying hours. tell yourself you’re not allowed to do less than 80% of what you did yesterday. whatever the hell it was, even just one hour. so if yesterday you really studied for like, say 8 hours, today your goal is to study for at least 6 and a half hours. if you can’t keep up with that, make it 70%, or 60%.
be forgiving of yourself. be kind to yourself. even if you bounced back and lost your streak. start again. as slowly as you did before. take your time. it’s okay, you were there once you can get there again.
