Sarah let out a small laugh before she was turning it off. She knew it was that loud and she had no shame in her music. “I mean, The Strokes are legends as well. I’m personally a fan of their Is This It album.”
“Ah, an equal opportunist.” He nods in agreement. “You typically make a habit of running into defenseless strangers? Or is it my lucky day?”
“Hey, the least you could do is donate your body to science. After all, you never know what incredible medical advancements could be achieved with the help of a healthy human body like the one you currently inhabit.”
He could laugh. Should laugh. Because there was nothing that felt healthy about this body or mind. “I suppose I could,” he says, though it seemed better suited for the trees and crows. Might poison their experiments - so called advancements - with his tainted heart. But this was none of her business. “My last request is to be handled with care.” So much for do no harm.
“study or become fertilizer? that sounds like a tough one to pick from. didn’t think about just grabbing a coffee and then maybe lie down in the woods but only to chill to get your brain going? ay, sounds wicked rad.”
“A blunt on the beach sounds better - making some way for a temporary apocalypse.”
Jenny barked a laugh, shaking her head in amusement. “I was just waiting for confirmation,” she retorted, but her easy smile hardened at his next question. “Oh, you know.” Her shoulders shrugged dismissively. If he didn’t know much about her, she wasn’t about to be the one to fill him in. “The rumor mill doesn’t usually focus on the good stuff, does it? I’d rather you didn’t know some of the… less than flattering things floating around out there.”
“I guess not,” he begins, jaw clenches while mulling over his next few words. “I’ve found the rumor mill doesn’t necessarily focus on the important stuff either.” Harvard taught him that lesson rather quickly - it only cost his sister. “And luckily, I find my own opinions are more reliable than that of idle gossip.”
Sarah wasn’t really paying attention to where she was running. Her music busting through her headphones loud enough that you could hear the music. She was on her daily afternoon run, hair in a bun, looking like a mess. She soon came into a collision with a person in front of her, falling down. She took her headphones out, music still on. “Oh my god. I am so sorry. I wasn’t looking. Are you okay?” She asked after she got up.
“I’ll survive,” he says, unraveling his own set of headphones before placing one bud in his left ear. “You alright?” A crooked smile begins to take form as she gets back on her feet, the music more audible now that. “Timberlake, huh? I’m more of a The Strokes fan myself.”
The question had her eyebrows furrowing in confusion until she noticed what he nodded towards. “Ah,“ she sighed at the realization, heat flushing up her chest to stain her cheeks. “Right. The condoms. Those were actually just for me. You know, just in case. No proper company here. I take it you don’t pay much attention to gossip.” If he had, he would’ve known she was obviously very, very single. “Better for me.”
“Oh no, I’m a regular gossip rag kind of guy. Can’t you tell?” He wasn’t. “Better for you? Why do you say that?” He makes eye contact with her for the first time, waiting for her response.
She hummed her agreement, trying not to let the feel of his eyes on her become too distracting. “First the condoms, now this,” her tongue clicked in mock disappointment. “The world is conspiring against us, Amon. When shall we make our grand escape?”
“I was only waiting for the proper company.” His forearms meet the table, leaning forward, “Speaking of, won’t yours be missing you?” His head nods in the direction of the vending machine.
“Oh god,” Jen groaned playfully, burying her scrunched up face in her hands. “Thanks for the heads up. You are the voice of reason I’ve always needed.” Over her shoulder she shot him a smile that softened when she noticed his solemn expression. Rather than ask if he was okay–a seemingly pointless question given the look on his face–she strode up to him, snatching up the empty seat beside him. “Good book?”
“Ah, my calling has finally appeared. I was beginning to get worried.” The words delivered with a smile despite the lie. The worry had settled in a long time ago. His eyes follow her around the table, only closing the book when she takes a seat. “No, awful. Seems like a day for the unlucky.”
“Yeah, they’re handing out free cupcakes in the quad right now- at least I think they’re free, I didn’t really ask ay.”
“You want one? I’ve got too many now,”
"No, my svelte frame would suffer with one bite,” he begins with a laugh. He sits back and reclines rather unceremoniously next to Blake, “That, and I don’t necessarily advocate for stealing from charities.”
“Do you think those condoms are FDA approved?” Jenny wondered, eyeing the vending machine in Marks Hall. “I didn’t really want to go to CVS but… I mean, have you ever seen anyone get these? I need a testimonial.”
“A couple times,” he says, gaze never lifting. “Same offender.” His fingers piece through a book. “He’s a father of three now. Coincidence or evidence?” He held his own opinion.
my name is charlie! i really like cats, angst, and any sort of dish with potatoes in it. born and raised in california! i’d love to plot with each and every one of you (no seriously) 12/10 times i’m down for all the plots, 17/10 times i’ll already makes playlists/graphics for our characters because #NOLIFECLUB.
let’s see, hmph, i’m not really that interesting so i’ll just get to mikah - my bruised boy (click the link for the sparknotes muse version)
LIKE THIS AND I’LL MESSAGE YOU TO PLOT.
okay, so mikah was born to a self-made billionaire father and a high-society mother. he’s got a younger sister that he tries to protect as much as he can. his father cheats in business and home, his mother is a smeared lipstick, running mascara patchwork. so he basically raised his sister and tried to protect her from their influence.
still, there were expectations for them growing up. he’s all private school prince, golden boy proper. spent summers jumping trains and planes to different countries.
doesn’t really care about wealth or material objects because he’s seen what it has done with his parents. he rebelled from the business world, but is finding the same sales mentality in the medical profession. thinks all the legacy stuff and workings of the greek system are bullshit in general - mostly the holier than thou complexes that comes with some of the people…
originally was doing pre-med at harvard before withdrawing. his sister came with him to a party and was drugged - got into a fight with one of the legacies (powerful son from powerful family) and mikah nearly beat him to death - to avoid any scandal with the university they all decided to remain tight-lipped about the incident.
he still maintains appearances though - the one thing his parents taught him well. he’s got a 4.0 that never falters - a highly functioning addict. he’s jaded though. he can feel himself crumbling under all the lives he wants to live. the push and pull of what’s expected of him and what he wants to be. it’s got him in this limbo where his potential is never really realized - whether it be at home, school, or love. he pulls as much as he pushes. waits for the drop. when things are going good, they inevitably fall. he’s just lost the point.
some headcanons:
to him, beauty lies in the undefinable. the complex in the simple. the simple in the complex. the i-just-can’t-put-my-finger-on-it. in a laugh, behind eyes, wind moving through a mountain pass, or when the sun and moon can be seen at the same time. feeling someone else’s skin on yours while crickets chirp. candlelight and open windows. sleepy eyes with bottles of wine. drives with old friends to new destinations. no destinations. the warmth of the ground on a summer evening. empty towns and flickering streetlights. deep conversations on the roof at sunrise. at sunset. when words fail.
logic must dictate. rule his person. without it, he would crumble from the weight. the heaviness. his heart, once pure, could be trusted - when he was a boy. he remembered a time when it helped him. when it showed him what his parents truly were. when he felt a pain for every wrong doing. when it stopped. it must have died one too many trips ago. he must have flat-lined and come back new. he hopes that one day it could be trusted. by himself and others. that there would be faith in it. that it would communicate with sincerity. that its beat would sync with the noble, the courageous. that it would not falter. that each aortic valve pumped clean and true. they could feel it in his pulse. hear it in his voice.
