“Is it just me or does it not feel like Fall at all?” Dante murmured to the person next to him as he took a drag of his cigarette.

“Welcome to California,” Sutton replied airily, eying the cigarette dangling from his fingers with apparent disdain, “Also, just for your own personal knowledge, for every cigarette you smoke, your lifespan shortens by seven to eight minutes.”

Almost missing the soft voice the man turned his attention to the figure by his side.” Yeah.. sure I mean unless it’s burying a body. I’m into Halloween.. but I don’t even know you. I’ll need at least a dinner date first.” he teased before a smile fell across his features.” How can I help?”

A quiet chuckle slipped past her lips while she subtly shook her head back and forth, “No bodies-- not today, at least,” she replied with a lighthearted shrug, a small smile unfurling on her features. Nodding towards the shelf housing the book she so desperately needed, she sighed dramatically, “Just to be clear-- I’m only using you for your height,” she teased lightly, “and there’s a book I can’t reach. All five foot two of me has been struggling for the last ten minutes and I saw you sitting here so I figured you could help out a damsel in distress like myself.”

“Yeah, no worries, I gotta be good for something,” Blake said with a chuckle, reaching up to grab the book with no trouble at all. He’d been staring at the pages of his book blankly for the past twenty minutes, trying to read the words but instead thinking about what he could have for dinner that night. Suffice to say, Blake wasn’t very good at studying without somebody to guide him along the way and keep him on track. “You’re persistent, I reckon I would have just Googled it, ay.”

“Well, you just made that look awfully easy,” Sutton remarked with a quiet chuckle, taking the gigantic book from his hands while a grateful expression colored her features, “Thank you so much. I’ve been reaching for this stupid encyclopedia for ten minutes and I really don’t think I’m getting any taller.” Brushing off some of the dust caked to the front cover, she hugged it to her chest like a lifeline, “I guess you could call me a bit old school,” she lifted her shoulders in a shrug, “but I have an easier time absorbing information when I can physically touch it. It’s like it’s real-- it’s tangible. I don’t know I probably sound like a freak right now,” she laughed lightheartedly, shaking her head back and forth, “Thanks-- uh-- wait, I didn’t catch your name.”

“How short are you even?” He let out as he chuckled a little. He stood up and walked over to the shelf, taking it down and handing it over to the red head. “And you actually read the books here?”

“Five foot two-- and a half,” she grumbled quietly under her breath, looking up at him with an appreciative smile, “Thank you so much. I would have asked the old librarian, Mr. Lundy, but he gives me creepy vibes.” Dusting off the front cover, she tucked the large book under her arm, nodding her head while her shoulders rose and fell in a shrug, “I’m a pre-med student. I spend 99% of my time here in the library.”

“No, it’s fine.” She said and let out a small laugh. “I’m only five foot seven, but I’m also wearing heels because I hate myself so I can try.” She let out as she stood up from the chair “Where is it and we can talk coffee.”

“Hey, on the plus side-- your legs look incredible in those heels. I couldn’t pull them off if my life depended on it,” she replied with a quiet chuckle, leading the girl over to the shelf housing her desired encyclopedia. Pointing up at large book, she sighed half-heartedly, “It’s that one there. The extra-large one. It’s an atlas of the human body.”

There was no telling as to why the male was even in the library. Maybe he just got lost on the way to the real place he needed to be. The music building. He pulled out his phone as he was sitting at some table and looked up at the girl. “Is it that book I saw you reaching for?”

Slightly startled at the fact that she’d had an audience for her first attempt at reaching the encyclopedia, she felt her pale skin begin to warm with embarrassment, “Oh-- uh-- yes. That’d be the one.”

Sarah stopped in her tracks when the red head approached her. She looked down at her books and back up at her. “What do you need, dear?”

“I-- uh-- I’m sorry to bother you, there’s just this book I need for my Anatomy lab this week and since I am approximately five foot two,” she sighed heavily, casting her gaze down her short legs, “I cannot reach it. I could really use some help snagging it from the top shelf. I’d be more than happy to repay you in coffee or whatever for your assistance.”

“Almost-- got it-- just-- a few more-- inches-- ah, fuck.” Falling back on her heels with an exaggerated huff, Sutton crossed her arms over her chest whilst glaring up at the blasphemous encyclopedia currently sitting on the top shelf just out of her reach. Looking up and down the aisles in hopes of finding someone who could possibly save the day, she noticed another sitting at a table a few feet away, obviously preoccupied with their nose buried in a book. Approaching cautiously, she whispered softly, “Hey-- hey you. Think you could help a girl out?”

“It is really important that you listen to your body in a situation like that. You see, the brain recognizes distress signals from all different regions in the body and has an innate ability to repair itself. Sleep is usually the best option. The human body is so fascinating.”
