the default parallelism between louis lestat and armand re: treatment of claudia makes me so mad i see so many posts (bad way to live) that are like FUCK all these MEN they ALL need to DIE VIOLENTLY. and i absolutely think the story at least as Louis is telling it is ABOUT how louis failed claudia. and about the specific horror and constraint of being someone’s daughter, inherent selfishness of parenthood. but that is so distinct from . the abuse . she is abused by the other two . louis is also abused by the other two. claudia equating her abusers to louis in her anger (every vampire i ever met was a bastard) is one thing but for people in their meta analysis of the show to constantly lump louis in with both their abusers is deeply irritating

the absurdity of the “fuck these men!” blanket encompassing louis is made very obvious by like . louis and claudia clutching at each other screaming each others names even though louis was harsh and unfair to her right before!! she wanted to come back to see him. even when she’s resentful of him during the trial she’s always fiercely protective of him. and then louis is hauled off to be buried alive while claudia is killed at armand’s command. and regardless of what you think lestat’s culpability in the trial itself is, he has documentedly wanted her dead, beaten her up, dragged her home kicking and screaming, threatened to crush her bones.

wish iwtv fans on here understood that you can acknowledge louis was a kind of shit partner to armand in paris without meaning that as a justification for any of what armand did. everyones either like louis was abusive and horrible to him (?) or they’re completely unable to entertain the idea that louis is capable of doing anything wrong. what if he just kind of sucked? just didn’t really do his best or extend empathy as much as he could’ve, screwed up in banal and understandable ways?

im not even going to entertain the idea that louis was somehow an aggressor or the only toxic party in their relationship because thats just fucking stupid. but on the other point… this is the hurt people (hurt people) show. louis is compelling because he is so richly flawed in ways informed by his trauma. dont take that away from him in order to villainize armand. armand does enough villainous shit on his own; he doesn’t need your help. and armand is compelling because he *is* sympathetic, because there are clear character reasons for the choices he makes, even though those choices are wrong and awful. there was a certain lack of empathy on louis’s part, a certain emotional distance, self-interest, and that led to armand believing that his love was not safe to choose over the coven’s. we can know that armand’s actions were insane and unwarranted while still acknowledging their basis. doing otherwise ignores the emotional arc that the show painstakingly built over the course of the season and the complexity of the characters themselves
