Caleb had been outside with Gabby when the SUV had come down the gravel, the crunch pulling his attention. He’d been on high alert since Val and Gabby had come home. With Marcus showing up, he’d decided he needed to keep close to home for a few days. Because even if Cora couldn’t have seen this coming, Caleb had. Watching as Roo ran herd the car and the man he knew would appear, he whistled low to bring the dog back. He wasn’t surprised at all when Declan Archer stepped out of the luxury vehicle. The kind of thing, the kind of person that had no business in a place like this. Furrowing his brow, he was quick to pick Gabby up, kissing her on the top of her head and telling her they were going to go see mama. When he entered the house, he found Declan towering over his sister, who’d clearly just been emerging from her room. Looking at Val, he handed Gabby off to her mother, his focus on his sister.
Cora had every intention of calling Declan the day before, but then Marcus had shown up. And she’d felt even more compelled, the guilt about Lily eating at her, had spent an hour finding her phone (it had slipped under the bed), plugged it in. And then, she’d gotten pulled away by Caleb coming to talk to her about Marcus, and then dinner, and then feeling sick and not being able to sleep well. She’d finally passed out in the early hours of the morning, and so Caleb was right that she’d just been coming downstairs when Declan had entered. She’d hardly said good morning to Val, her body still swimming in an oversized t-shirt that concealed the shorts she wore, when he’d appeared. For a second she thought she must be dreaming. That was why she hesitated when he turned away. He must have been a mirage. She’d lost her mind finally and she was hallucinating him and she was pathetic, wasn’t she? He got through the door, and then Cora glanced at Val and Caleb - the looks on their faces telling her that he’d actually been there.
Shit. She hadn't expected him to show up without being prompted. Had expected him to fight coming here, to punish her for leaving in the first place. But Cora knew him well enough to know he wouldn't be happy to have wasted his time coming here to find her just fine. Even if she was anything but. She'd just gotten done being sick, brushing her teeth, was going to seek out some of Val's herbal tea to try and settle her morning sickness. Now there wasn't time. Ignoring the nausea, she grit her teeth and sucked in a deep breath, steadying herself for a conversation she wasn't ready to have.
“Val, keep Caleb inside.” That was all Cora said, before she was heading outside behind Declan. She knew she needed to get to him before he got to the car. She couldn’t run, but she moved quickly, getting to the front porch and calling out, “Declan, wait!” Going down the steps behind him, she felt desperate, not knowing what else to do, what else to say. She knew him. And as much as she wanted him to be the type of guy who would care enough to listen, she’d seen it. When he’d stormed in, Cora had seen the look in his eyes when he’d realized she was fine. Because she’d broken so many rules - her watch had been moved to the kitchen counter, her phone was still on the charger, his missed calls and texts were waiting for her, so of course he was furious.
So this wasn’t ideal, this wasn’t the plan, and maybe even this wasn’t enough at this point, but it was the easiest way to explain everything in the shortest way possible, blurting out, “Declan - I’m - We’re… I’m pregnant.” Cora stopped then, keeping some distance between them, a hand moving to her abdomen, holding there protectively, as if to shield the growing child from potential rejection. The thought made her heart squeeze a little. She didn’t wait before adding on, “We need to talk. But not here, not with Cal around." There was still a wintry bite to the air, even though it would likely warm up a little later in the day. "Can I put some clothes on and we can go for a walk? Please?”
