Okay, so now I’ve had time to fully digest the ending, my three main niggles with it were:
- the entire mess of a season leading up to it (I’ll leave that for another time as I’m doing a rewatch of season 15)
- the method of Dean dying - I spoke about that in another post and actually I’m fine with that right now. I like the tragedy of it.
- Dean dying younger and Sam and Dean separated for years with Sam living a happy apple pie life without his brother.
I’ll deal with the third one here. As I’ve said before, I’m happy with people to have different interpretations over something, because sometimes it gets me to think about things in a different way.
I had two different experiences yesterday, one extreme Sam fan came at me on one of my posts because I dared to suggest Sam wasn’t completely happy without his brother. I didn’t mind their opinion being different to mine, but I did mind their attitude about it as if anyone not having the same opinion as them was wrong. Uh nope GTFO with that.
And then another post came along that got me to think about the episode again in an entirely different light.

I know the show was never going to show Sam putting a bullet in his brain and I understand that but looking at that last scene with Sam as he’s turning the lights out, you know he’s not ever coming back. Sam went on that last hunt and died on that last hunt and I can believe that the scenes of Sam growing old are Dean dreaming as he’s driving, he’s happy because he’s dreaming of his baby brother having this life and family. I see his face when Sam appears, he knows instantly and he’s not surprised in the least that Sam got there shortly after he did (yeah time works different in heaven, but not THAT different). I see Sam a little uncertain; Dean will know he didn’t do as asked (Sam hasn’t aged a day) and he’s a little worried about his response but Dean knew his brother wouldn’t listen and he’s happy he’s here.
This is now my ending and I personally love it. I love that all encompassing love in fiction, the drama of Romeo and Juliet going all out for each other. This is an ending I personally can live with and I love it because if people want to imagine Sam being able to be happy with a family and a long life, they have that too. My interpretation does not affect their interpretation or enjoyment of the same thing.
I love this interpretation and I think these last two days have cemented my feeling that this is the ending I believe in.
Truth is, I’m sure the authors meant for Sam to live his life. We see Sam suffering decades after Dean’s death when he sits in the Impala. I doubt Dean would imagine that because I believe he would imagine only happy things for Sam.
At the same time, I know the authors made Sam pop up in Heaven as a young man because it wouldn’t have been nice to have an aged Jared on screen with Jensen for the last time.
Yet, they left it open for interpretation. I don’t know if they consciously made this decision or not, but I love the fact that it is not clear at all.
I kinda get the feeling that J2 will go along the interpretation meant by the authors in the following cons, but to be fair I love thinking that Sam died offscreen and reached Dean only a few weeks after his death.
My logic says that he lived on, but I don’t actually have proof of that, so I decide to believe that they got their reunion very early.
*although I love the idea of Dean driving for decades waiting for Sam, oh the pining*
I love most of the interpretations, I’ve seen one or two that I’ve went, nope to but on the most part, I’m seeing people enjoying making the ending theirs. And I like the concept of having the Winchesters continue as I do the line ending with Sam and Dean.
I just love this one because now that I’ve thought even more about it, that smile from Dean at the end wasn’t just because Sam was there, it’s because at the end of the day, Sam chose Dean over everything. He no longer wanted to escape or go to college or have a normal apple pie life, he wanted Dean. Other people can and do disagree and think it’s terrible and Sam not having a life of his own etc. but meh, he and Dean have an eternity of an afterlife in heaven going where the story takes them. They’re both happy with that and I don’t see death in this instance as being tragic or something to mourn over.
Yes yes yes!!! This is now my ending as well. I hope it’s okay if I make a copy and let it grow in my brain. Oh yes. This is so nice. So much better. *happy feels*
