River glanced at the other woman as she spoke, somewhat understanding her more serious tone past the rather blase words it hid behind. On the surface, it was the mere agreement over the genealogy and homeland of the man before them. But past that, it was the underlying mixture of awe and fear at just how much power an individual with that title could hold â especially if one was on the wrong side of their wrath.
She had yet to determine if the woman she had guided in was one of those unfortunate souls.
The unexpected response from the man on the sofa caused her to turn her attention towards him, the slightest bit of surprise showing on her face.
âNow thatâs just rubbish, sweetie,â River murmured, watching and waiting as he seemed to come to his senses. He must have been deep asleep for it to take him so long to recognize his surroundings and the people unexpectedly in them, and River felt a bit guilty for disturbing him.
Smiling softly at his rather weak attempt to cover herself â it was nothing she hadnât seen before â the Doctor caught her off guard at his rather different means of addressing the woman next to her. The woman beside her did much the same at her response, River looking between them for a moment.
âAn apology? Now Doctor, I know youâre not always the most careful of men, but what did you do this time to need to apologize â especially if she actually needed to chase you down to get one?â
Internally Sarah Jane panicked. Why on earth had she asked for this? She knew maybe it was something she needed but what good would it do and really just what was he supposed to do that would be good enough?
That doesnât matter, a vicious part of her thought. He deserves to be in agony over this. Look at him, sleeping away in some mockery of Earth fashion, lolling about like heâs never had a care. All of this monstrous history and you people make him your ruler! How is that justice?
XI sat up slowly. He didnât even think to ask them to sit, even with River so pregnant. It wasnât as though he knew whether they both intended to stay. He looked almost despairingly between them, pushing down any desire to grow angry and defensive.
âWhere would I even start?â
âYou could bloody well try!â Sarah Jane blurted.
âI did!â Maybe a little bit defensive. âIâve sent you messages, I picked you up when you called, I gave you... gave you things I thought might make you happy.â
âYouâve never come to see me in person.â
âNo, I havenât. I didnât think you wanted me to. You hated me. You attacked the Doctor when we first got here because you thought he was me!â
âI know.â XI rubbed his face. âWhat did you expect me to say?â He continued, bitter but genuine. âIâm sorry I stole you away with me and said the things I said, for what I almost did. Iâm sorry for leaving the universe to destruction because I wasnât strong enough or sane enough to save it. Iâm sorry about Earth and that youâre stuck on my planet where your home should rightfully be. Iâm sorry Iâve spoiled the memories you had of me.â Hardly able to look at Sarah Jane, his gaze drifted to River, conscious of her having to witness this. âIf either of you would like to sit, please...â
Sarah Jane didnât for the moment, not meeting his eyes either. Everything was too raw and her emotions ran high.
