The feminization of Will Byers
In this post I will be talking about the EXCESSIVE feminization that I see fans put Will Byers through.
First of all I will say, Will Byers is a fictional character foremost, what fans headcanon him as is fair game, it shouldn't be this much of a problem since he's not real. If you like fem! Will, I don't care because I don't know you. I even like Fem! Will as a treat sometimes. But that's not my point -->
My point is how this might affect the view on gay couples. Because SOME of this fanbase, "byler"(I am apart of the byler fandom), seems to look at Byler through a heteronormative lens, and that's where the problematistics lie. To force femininity on Will Byers as the only openly gay man in the franchise is weird when he in all of the series has NEVER shown traits of embracing feminity. And NO being creative is not a sign of being fem, and NO having a fat ass doesn't mean you're a bottom and NO walking fruity doesn't mean you embrace your womanhood.
I've seen fanarts of Will being drawn more fem, I've read fics where Will is expressed as a very fem gay man, and like I said, you can do whatever. But when it's ONLY Will getting this treatment, it rubs me the wrong way. "But Mike isn't gay" It's Byler babes, you ship Byler, a gay pair, Mike is queer through a byler lens, so why have I never seen this much feminization for Mike? Where is Mike in a slutty dress? Off the point, bc even if Mike was the one getting feminized instead, it would still be as weird and wrong.
The Bottom vs Top discourse is ridiculous, because everytime I'm on twt every other post is "ew bottom mike", but let's try to think why they can't even fathom Mike being a bottom? (or switch), maybe because of the oh oh oh heteronormativity? The feminization of Will? "Oh but Will is a twink and every twink is a bottom" WRONG! Twinks can top, plus Mike isn't this masculine alpha that you want him to be. He's lanky, he's pointy, he's awkward. "But he wants to protect" and I'm not taking that away from him. Did anyone else see Sorcerer? Who was the one protecting there? Yeah. This discussion fucking sucks, because why can't they both protect and be protected? If they're each others everything, then let them at least have each other to rely on.
To sum up: Don't be so stuck up, have fun, try to see a new perspective, and don't be a dick.
