Pink paradise // 桃源郷 (tōgenkyō) means paradise; lit.: Peach-spring-hometown. It's the title of a 5th century Chinese parable about the discovery of a people living in perfect harmony with nature, having miraculously escaped the political unrest of previous dynasties. Behold: the Nāga! Naga are giant serpents in Indian religions (Hinduism, Buddhism) and almost every Thai Buddhist temple has a pair of Nāga flanking their staircase. Many are white, but this psychedelic example is from Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai. Lots of bling at Wat Phra Singh Also lots of sexism...in Thai Buddhism in general. There are strict rules about what women can wear into a temple and at one place a gay even told us we had to use a different entrance (even though no sign was posted and once inside we saw women enter through the door he told us not to use). The eponymous yard ~ though I prefer to enjoy it from the air conditioned living room upstairs 😂 Our hostel is very cool--the buildings are built from shipping containers and they are very eco-friendly--fortunately that didn't lead them to turn down the AC! The surrounding neighborhood is full of cafes and bars but becomes residential really quickly. The old roads along the rivers and canals in Suzhou were very cleaned up and tourist friendly; on some blocks you could see where older buildings were being torn down or remodeled to accommodate new stores catering to tourists in search of souvenirs.
