Make it bigger, Rafael Serra
Dune activity book series, published in 1984 to promote David Lynch’s movie adaptation of the classic Frank Herbert novel, produced by Universal Studios.
Somewhere along the line of Dune’s years-long production schedule, a decision was made at Universal to create the kind of kid merchandise that had sold so well for George Lucas, to capitalize on what would doubtlessly be the latest “sci-fi” monster smash.
Later, when new management sent all the pieces scattering across the board in a crazed attempt to sow chaos and doom, no one noticed or cared that some segment of the marketing department was blithely trundling along, turning psychosexual alien faces, psycopathic royalty, and intergalactic narcotics into fun all-ages activity pages.

Opening on Wednesday, February 13th, 2019 at Ala Moana Center in Honolulu, Hawaii for POW! WOW! is the group exhibition curated by Spoke Art dedicated to Hayao Miyazaki entitled, “My Neighbor Hayao.”
“My Neighbor Hayao” is a whimsical showcase of over one hundred and fifty artists from around the world celebrating the films of Japanese film-maker and animator Hayao Miyazaki. Taking inspiration from the Studio Ghibli director’s classic films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, The Wind Rises, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke, exhibiting artists have created unique works inspired by Miyazaki’s imaginative universe.
Featuring a diverse array of painting, embroidery, sculpture and limited edition prints, each artist offers their unique perspective and interpretation of beloved characters and themes in Miyazaki’s films. Imbued with the legendary director’s sense of adventure, deep reverence for nature and strong female characters, this dynamic three day exhibition is not to be missed.
The exhibition will be on view until Sunday, February 17th, 2019.
