The TARDIS hummed a quiet melody as it materialised. Through the open doors, the distant, amber light of London at midnight flickered against the dark waters of the Thames.
You walked past him toward the doors, leaning your shoulder against the wooden frame. The cool night air felt sharp against your skin. "London," you whispered, a small smile tugging at your lips. "Quiet London."
The Doctor pulled his silver pocket watch from his waistcoat, the faint click of the latch breaking the stillness. "1892," he said softly, his voice carrying that rare, fragile gentleness. "No Cybermen. Just cold air, quiet streets, and time... standing still, just for a bit."
You turned your head, stepping back into the warm threshold and placing a hand lightly on his forearm. "You usually hate quiet."
He didn't pull away. His gaze dropped to your hand on his sleeve, his breathing slowing down. "I used to," he murmured, his eyes lifting to meet yours with a sudden, searing intensity. "Before I had someone worth stopping time for."
The silence stretched, thick and heavy.
Then, you tilted your head, a sly grin spreading across your face. "Did the ancient, terrifying Time Lord just compliment me? Or are you just trying to distract me from the fact that you nearly crashed us into a supernova twenty minutes ago?"
The Doctor blinked. The sudden shift completely threw him off balance.
A faint flush of red crept up his neck, dusting his cheeks. He froze for a fraction of a second, his confidence instantly evaporating into awkward, flustered panic.
"I—what? No!" he stammered, his eyes darting anywhere but your face as he hastily pulled his arm back and stuffed his hands deep into his pockets. "I was being poetic! A moment of atmospheric reflection! And for the record, that supernova was a navigational anomaly, completely unrelated to my brilliant piloting!"
"Right. Brilliant," you wheezed, crossing your arms and leaning back against the TARDIS door, enjoying every second of his flustered state. "Keep telling yourself that, Space Boy."
"Space Boy?!" He gasped dramatically, pointing an accusing finger at you, his bowtie practically vibrating with indignation. "I am a nine-hundred-year-old traveler of the cosmos! I have saved entire galaxies! You don't get to call me 'Space Boy' just because you refuse to appreciate my complex romantic—I mean, platonic—rhetoric!"
"You're rambling when you're embarrassed," you pointed out dryly, raising an eyebrow. "It's cute."
The Doctor choked on his own breath, his cheeks flushing an even deeper shade of crimson. He turned on his heel so fast he nearly tripped over his own boots, marching back toward the console and grabbing a random lever just to have something to hold onto.
"I am not embarrassed! I am merely... adjusting the atmospheric dampeners!" he insisted, his voice cracking slightly as he aggressively flipped a switch that did absolutely nothing. "And you are terribly argumentative today. Unbearably so."
"Only because you make it so easy," you laughed, stepping fully back inside and letting the heavy wooden doors click shut behind you. You walked up the mesh stairs, resting your hands on the console railing across from him.
He refused to look up at you, intensely fascinated by a flickering green light on the dashboard.
The laughter slowly faded from your voice, replaced by a quiet, lingering curiosity that had been building up for months. You leaned in a little closer across the metal controls.
"Hey," you said softly.
"I am busy calibrating," he huffed, still avoiding your eyes, though his hands were visibly trembling slightly against the brass dials.
"Doctor."
He finally paused, letting out a small, defeated sigh as he looked up at you through his messy fringe. "What?"
You held his gaze, your tone dropping into a soft, serious murmur that made the vast room feel instantly small again.
"What's your actual name?"
The Doctor went entirely still. The flustered, clumsy persona dissolved in a heartbeat, replaced by a deep, ancient quiet. He stared at you, his golden-green eyes unreadable, the TARDIS humming softly between you in the heavy silence.

The TARDIS console was making a sound like a wet cat being pulled through a harp.
"I told you!" you shouted over the squealing engines, waving a spanner at him. "I specifically, explicitly, in plain English told you: do not press the green brass toggle!"
"It wasn't green!" the Doctor shot back, ducking under a burst of steam as he frantically buzzed the console with his sonic screwdriver. The blue light whirred violently. "It was seafoam! A completely different shade, highly sophisticated, meant for emergency stabilizing—"
"It turned the gravity upside down for four minutes, Doctor! I had tea in my hand!"
"And you held onto the mug! Which was brilliant, by the way, absolute top-tier muscle memory," he spun around the central pillar, pointing a finger at you with that manic, wide-eyed grin. "Most humans would have dropped it. You? You defied physics out of sheer spite for spilling Earl Grey."
You set the spanner down on the console with a heavy, deliberate clank, crossing your arms.
"My boots are ruined. There is alien dust in my hair. And if you don't stop that buzzing noise in three seconds, I'm taking your bow tie."
The Doctor froze mid-whir. His sonic screwdriver clicked off, the room dropping into sudden, blissful silence. He slowly lowered his arm, his golden-green eyes locking onto yours. The chaotic grin melted away, replaced by that familiar, crooked half-smile.
"You wouldn't dare," he whispered, stepping around the glass rotor, his voice suddenly lower, warmer. "Not the bow tie. Bow ties are cool."
"Try me," you stepped closer to the console, refusing to back down. "I've survived three cybermen, a temporal storm, and your driving. A piece of red silk doesn't scare me."
He stared at you for a long second, his eyes tracing your face, taking in the smudge of grease on your cheek and the fiery look in your eyes. He let out a soft, breathy laugh, leaning his elbows on the copper railing right across from you.
"You're impossible," he muttered softly, his tone completely shifting from manic time-lord to something dangerously personal. "Do you know that?"
"I know it," you replied, leaning forward just as much, not giving him an inch of space. "And you love every second of it."
The Doctor’s eyes sparkled with that sharp, dangerous mischief. He opened his mouth to deliver some theatrical comeback, but the TARDIS gave a sudden, gentle sigh beneath your feet—the soft gold lights around the rotor dimming to a warm, ember-like hum. The storm outside was completely gone.
Silence settled in, thick and suffocating.
The Doctor stayed still for a beat, his eyes dropping briefly to your lips before returning to yours. The playful energy seemed to drain out of him in real time, leaving behind the exhausted, ancient man underneath. He pushed himself off the railing and casually tossed his sonic screwdriver onto the console.
"I'll get a cloth," he said quietly, his voice losing its fast pace. "For your cheek. You’ve got... well, you look like you tried to eat an engine component."
"It's grease, Doctor," you called after him as he walked toward the darker corridor leading to the living quarters. "And whose fault is that?"
"The time-rotor!" his voice echoed from the hallway, hollow and slightly distant. "It reacted badly to the atmospheric pressure! Completely blameless!"
You shook your head, a faint smile tugging at your lips despite the adrenaline still humming through your veins. You sat down on the mesh stairs near the console, stretching your tired legs out. Your heart was still beating a little too fast—not just from escaping a collapsing temporal pocket, but from the way he had looked at you just seconds ago.
He always did that. Pushed right to the edge, made the air in the room feel heavy enough to drown in, and then pulled back behind a joke or a sudden errand.
A minute later, the Doctor walked back into the console room. But he didn't have a cloth.
Instead, he was holding a small, damp towel, his tweed jacket entirely gone, the sleeves of his white button-down rolled up to his elbows. Without his jacket, he looked surprisingly thinner, less like a time-traveling professor and more like someone exposed and real.
He didn't say a word. He walked straight over to where you were sitting on the stairs, stopped right in front of you, and slowly dropped down onto his knees on the cold metal floor.
You blinked, caught off guard. "Doctor?"
"Hold still," he murmured, his voice surprisingly soft.
He reached out, his long fingers carefully cupping the side of your jaw to steady you. His skin was warm, his thumb resting gently against your cheekbone. With his other hand, he brought the damp towel up to your cheek, dabbing lightly at the grease mark.
He was so close you could feel the heat radiating off him, smell the rain, old paper, and faint ozone that always followed him. His eyes were entirely focused on your face, fixated on the tiny movement of his hands, his breathing shallow and slow.
"You could have died today," he said suddenly, his voice dropping into a register so low and quiet it sent a shiver straight down your spine.
"I didn't," you whispered, your hands resting on the step behind you to keep yourself grounded.
"You almost did," he corrected, his thumb making a slow, deliberate stroke across your skin—no longer wiping away grease, just touching you. His eyes flicked up to meet yours, intense, dark, and utterly stripped of any humor. "And I was standing right there."
