The modalities in this text are visual (the pictures), linguistic (story written in words) and due to this being a video recording of a person reading the book it is also aural.

I might use this in the classroom for students that have an impairment in their sight or hearing. I could use this in the classroom to prompt students to create a similar video where they could do this with a book they have created themselves. Students could also do this for their buddies or a friend with their favourite book. I could use this multimodal version of the text to construct my thoughts and views and deeper understandings while the students watch the video. This enables the students to see how to approach the comprehension task and is still given the information of the text. This type of multimodal text could be used for the mentor text to study the Stolen Generations and the history of Indigenous Australians. This would allow for students to do further reading tasks on how the author used language to relate to this topic. The students could closely analyse the images and how it portrays the topic. The students could also have a task of creating a book with this topic however looking at the perspective of Non-Indigenous Australians.

Last year on placement I saw this resource being used extensively to introduce new books, re-read books and study books. The children loved the technology element where the different film techniques would enlargen specific pictures. The storyteller used a very animated voice and often helped with engagement as the students were listening to a different voice

Additional post-

Whilst on placement, my mentor suggested I get this app. It connects to the local library and allows you to “borrow” books. This app gives you access to a book or audiobook on your device for convenience and provides a digital experience for libraries.

I saw my mentor use this app with the classroom novel to calm the students down after P.E.

Week 2-

This is a resource I have found on social media. Whilst on placement I did see something similar however, the students did not place their names at the stage they were at.

In my own classroom, I would love to have a display like this which gives me an indication of where my students are at and also gives them a reminder of their writing process ensuring they do not miss any steps.

Note: I would remove the pre write section as usually students are expected to plan first. I would also add another visual of the editing process or a checklist to prompt them for effecting editing

This book was read to me at a very young age as it corresponded with my love for Sesame Street. I remember once having the ability to read, Dad made me read it with a funny voice. I would always read this book before reading my set readers from school. I loved this book as it incorporated rhyming, humour and set out like a game.

As a teacher I will ensure that students are able to read something they enjoy and are given the opportunity to explore a range of texts. Teaching literacy in schools, I will try to pick their interests and allow them to bring books from home to share their love of reading with their peers through book explanation sessions
