Stop Spending & Start Stacking

Happy Thursday, Angelz.

How many of you have experienced being paid one day, and then penny-pinching the next? Living on a high the first few hours of payday only to recklessly dwindle the money before the week even ends. Some of us grew out of this irritating cycle, but others? Still need a little help. One thing that helped me get my finances in order is a budget. I know what you’re thinking, “I already have that.” Well, why aren’t you saving then? Right, because it’s not that simple. When having a budget it's important that you follow up by documenting your finances as well, meaning your weekly spending. This can sound intimidating at first, but there are many ways to do this. You can use a binder, a notebook, or Excel to get started. It’s much more beneficial to see things documented when trying to track your spending.

Luckily for our MJW Angelz, we have decided to offer free finance templates to get you all started. Our finance templates only require you to input the money spent, while the included formula does all the math for you. To make use of these, you can upload the document in Google Sheets or Excel.

Shutting Down Retail

Hey Angelz! Sadly, it isn’t 2005 anymore. Your favorite retail stores? They all shut down.

With the weather changing, and prices rising, one would expect stores to remain open right? Wrong. With the continuous climb of crime, many mainstream retailers are closing their doors. Let’s have a look at Target for our first example.

In late 2023, Target announced its plans to close almost 10 stores that had been affected by shoplifting. This would include three stores in San Francisco, an NYC location, and more in Seattle. While known for its affordable luxury, the store became an easy target for New York’s favorite ‘boosters’. Once the staff shortened, things got out of control fast, causing Target to impulsively shut down its East Harlem location.

Forever 21 is another retailer that has fallen victim to the infamous 5-finger discount. Growing up in an urban city, everyone knew the specific stores to visit for that “special discount”. Unfortunately for F21, they just so happened to be on every teenager’s list. These days, fans can find Forever21 online via multiple marketplaces. This coming after several “Everything Must Go” sales at prior locations.

Most might say, this is strictly an overconsumption problem, however that isn’t true. When looking at the data, and type of goods stolen, the problem relates to poverty.

When companies like Walmart begin penny- pinching and claiming concern regarding shoplifting, that’s where we begin to think. According to Statista.com, larceny-theft has only increased since the recession began in 2023. This would lead us to believe the reasoning for shoplifting is not greed, but needs.

With the current recession in place, will retailers wise up by lowering their guard and prices?

Select retailers have begun reopening their doors after analyzing the loss caused by shutting doors so soon. Target also opened a location in Union Square in an attempt to quell those who had been affected by the East Harlem closure. Although many are unhappy it’s definitely a start to resolving the issue.

Then again, is it possible to please both the customers and retailers?

Tierra’s Whack World

We first discovered Tierra Whack years ago, through her short film on YouTube titled “Whack World”. The film can be described as 15 minutes of relatable nostalgia. Viewers watch as Tierra plays the role of a main character who is going through the stages of a breakup. Each scene is carefully curated, with costumes, props, and color. Reminding us of Missy Elliot's Videos from back in the day, Tierra uses her creative mind to capture the viewer’s attention. Several easter eggs are scattered through the film for those with a good eye and an even better ear.

Tierra Whack’s “Whack World” is an experience all on its own. As Tierra opens the album, you’re greeted with a monotone melody over a bubbly beat immediately shocking the audience. She throws a curve ball by following Black Nails up with Bug’s Life, calmly introducing herself as one of the best female rappers in our generation.

Tierra’s first musical project was released in 2018, Since then she has released several singles such as Unemployed, My Power, and Copy Cat. The work she’s done with artists like Doja Cat, Beyonce, Lil Yachty and more demonstrates her growth, and talent as an overall artist and musician.

Q: Welcome to MaryJanezWorld, today we will be sitting down, getting to know our CEO. What should everyone call you?

A: Venus Naji, or V for short.

Q: What's the story behind your journey?

A: Starting as a Cashier I trained to become an Esthetician, securing a role at Sephora. When making the transition to E-Commerce, I landed a position at a popular E-Bike Company. This position was a needed change for survival.

Q: Can you share a defining moment in your career that has influenced your creative vision?

A: My most recent role is what introduced me to the world of B2B Sales. It was easy to be inspired while at a startup company with a lot of street hype. I gained tons of knowledge for my own passion projects.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring creatives who are anxious about starting?

A: Once you stop looking at the numbers, it’s a lot easier.

Q: In a world filled with trends, how do you stay true to your unique voice and vision?

A: It’s important to remember inspiration doesn’t mean duplication. Always stay true to you, never copy and paste.

Q:Can you share a lesson you've learned from a setback or failure in your career?

A: Trust your gut. If you’re “comfortable” in your career, something is wrong. Your career should feel easy but it should also be challenging.

Q: Who or what inspires your work and fuels your creativity? A: 2000s Pop Culture, Throwback Jams, & Pinterest.

Q: If your creations could evoke one emotion in your audience, what would it be?

A: Nostalgia

Q: Describe your personal style in three words. A: Hmm.. Tim Burton, Snooki & Tomboy.

Q: Tell us a fashion trend you're obsessed with

A: Animal Print or Fox Tails, I used to love those on Tumblr.
