putting any religious beliefs aside, it interests me that humans out of all species became the dominant species. We arent necessarily striking compared to most primates, we are a lot less strong, we do not have as much dexterity compared to some that can use their feet as hands, we arent even the only ones that can use tools. Though we have advantages that we do not even think about most days. We have a very strong resistance to most poisons, to the point we often consume them for pleasure and some are even a part of candy. While we are not strong, we have very high stamina compared to most primates, and we can throw much better to the point a lot of our tools are just "throw better and throw faster" or centering around throwing in general (spears, guns, cannons, slingshots). Stuff like spears can really only be used by us thanks to us having the ability to throw things well, which also allows us to defend ourselves and hunt much more effectively, which lowers to risk of predators. We also think through trial and error, which allows us to improve on our designs. Like semi aquatic mammals, we have complex verbal communications, with them being invented in many separate areas allowing for the creation for many languages. Speaking on semi aquatic mammals, we are very effective swimmers compared to other primates, with our fat content allowing for buoyancy. There is also other animals with complex social systems which are arguably as complex as us like in ants, with them basically having civilization in colonies, and even farming fungus and caterpillars and enslaving other species of ants, though they lack both the dexterity of hands and the ability to throw materials. This makes them preyed by many animals and even seen as a common nuisance for us. So to be a dominant species there seems to be a couple requirements to rise up to it.

-Have the ability to understand trial and error

-Be able to create tools

-Have a complex social structure

-Be on the top of the food chain or seem undesirable to hunt by being able to create tools to defend onceself

-Have complex verbal language(s)

-Have at least one set of dexterous limbs with the ability to throw and create tools

-Have a high amount of intelligence

-Have the ability to access more than one terrain, such as being able to swim or fly, or even both

given this, a dominant species does not need to have the ability to keep upright at all times or look vaguely human like, other than at least one set of hand like appendages so aliens that are their dominant species of their planet being even vaguely humanoid is heavily unlikely and even seems like a disadvantage because being completely upright when evolving from a quadrupedal ancestor causes spinal and knee issues, which makes it actually not the ideal look for a species, unless the common ancestor was also upright like this perhaps.
