She giggled softly, got up from her desk, and searched through the shelves until she finally found one. Then, she turned around and placed it on the table.

Nurse Barlow giggled, planting a small kiss on the letter before returning it to sender.

She perked up at the question, a small smile on her lips.
"Oh absolutely. Women are very pretty."
She glanced away, clearly thinking about something, though what it was wasn't quite clear yet.
"Hm.. maybe I should pay Nurse Barlow another visit..."
"Hmph, don't think those puppy eyes are going to convince me again, I'm not a lily livered dummy, dear."
Nurse Barlow would look away, chin raised up as she tried her best to not crack a smile, raising her book up to hide her face.
"Perhaps some pills could help you leave these petty delusions!" She cheerfully said, putting her book against her chest, the most sickeningly sweet smile ever on those rosey cheeks.

She narrowed her gaze as she simply observed the nurse for a few seconds before letting out a joyless laugh.
“That’s rich coming from someone who relies too much on the pills Murkoff forces down your throat. I think I like you better when you’re off those meds of yours.”
She leaned just a bit closer, a small smirk crossing her lips.
“You really think you’re doing something here, hm? You think pills are the answer to everything? Maybe it’s easier for you to sit there and pop those pills so you don’t have to think of what everyone else is going through.”
She responded callously.

Nurse Barlow would never admit her reliance on these wonderful pills Murkoff provided, she would simply giggle gently and look at Amelia, both their eyes would now meet.
"Forces? Why I take them on my own accord, honey, I know that what we're doing here Is for the better of the world, a way to preserve our places in life, everyone in their right place.."
The blonde gal adjusted herself, her eyebaga which were covered by layers of makeup would still be visible, she was tired, she was like a pill dispensing robot running out of battery.
"You've been sounding like Mr. Noakes, tsk, tsk, tsk, If I didn't feel bad for the poor dear I sure do now If he ever decides to listen you, our little jesus.."
She would say that last part with a bit of disdain.
She shook her head, a laugh of disbelief escaping her lips.
“And let’s talk about when you weren’t taking those pills. You seemed much more coherent about what was happening when you weren’t popping pills every day.”
She narrowed her gaze ever so slightly, crossing her arms over her chest.
“At least Noakes knows the bullshit this place is made up of. I wish you’d see it too. Hell, I’d probably get along with you just fine if you weren’t under the influence of Murkoff.”
"The pills help Mama Barlow feel better. When you were in the trials, didn’t the pills help you? Didn’t they make you better in ways you couldn’t possibly imagine? They can give you the strength of ten men—or the brains of an Einstein."
Nurse Barlow occasionally glanced down at her book, then back up at Amelia. She was starting to grow bored of the girl's presence, but she kept that pleasant tone in her voice, just like always.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk… Mr. Noakes had better watch what he says. It could bring trouble his way if he doesn’t choose where his loyalties lie."
She grimaced a bit at the tone, not appreciating it much.
“Just because they helped me not get killed doesn’t mean I have to be thankful. No one should be forced to do these trials—“
She shook her head, knowing she was essentially just talking to a brick wall, though her expression hardened once the nurse mentioned Noakes.
“Don’t get him in trouble. He’s doing more than enough… I owe that man my life in more ways than one.”
"Nobody is forcing them, my dearest. They decide to come here—and from what I've been told, they even sign a release form!~ It's all in ink and paper..."
Emily closed her book completely, a rare occurrence considering her nose was always buried in one. She placed it neatly beside her, then rested an arm on the desk, using it to support her head as she looked up at Amelia, taking note of the expression on her face.
"Poor dear, already losing your temper?"
Such conversations were riveting. Nurse Barlow wouldn’t admit it, but these interactions truly helped her mental state. That persistent feeling of loneliness—despite being constantly surrounded by people—clung to her like a second skin. She always had to wear a smile. But with Amelia... let’s just say she had a bit more freedom.
She grimaced, raising a brow behind her mismatched glasses before letting out a sarcastic laugh.
“They come here for pretenses that they don’t fully understand until it’s too late.”
She leaned a bit closer, her gaze narrowing just a bit as she stared the other woman down. She finally let out a sigh, shaking her head a bit as she broke eye contact.
“No, no.. I’m not… I’m not losing my temper.”
She lied, taking a few steadying breaths to calm herself before continuing.
“Just… Well, I guess I can’t understand how this feels normal to you? I can guarantee that you’d be far less happy if you were the one risking your life out there every day.”
"I'm not some heartless monster, you know? I do feel bad for these lost souls. Some of us are just as captive as the reagents..."
Nurse Barlow blinked repeatedly, visibly surprised by such an uncharacteristic response. Normally, she only felt like this when the effects of her pills began to fade—more emotional, less composed, and even that carefully maintained smile began to crack, slipping into a faint frown.
"I'm sure if the circumstances were different, I’d understand you on a personal level. But alas, I can’t afford to grow too soft-hearted. It's just science and..."
The blonde let out a sigh, her head pounding relentlessly. Her dependency on the pills had only deepened with time. It used to take hours before the drowsiness set in—then minutes, and now, mere seconds.
She paused briefly at noticing the change in the nurse. She leaned in gently, hesitating briefly before setting a bandaged hand on the nurse’s shoulder gently.
“…I knew you understood deep down. Maybe you should go lie down?”
She could already see the fatigue on Barlow’s face and despite herself, she was willing to help the nurse.
“I have a small place we could go if you wanted to recover without being.. bothered, for lack of a better term.”
Emily just stared up at her for a while, her eyes going half-lidded. All that coffee and all those pills weren’t doing her any good. Nurse Barlow couldn’t stand her position here sometimes—she just wanted some sun, some fresh air, and a decent meal, considering all there was to eat around here was that bland-ass food.
"That would be nice, dear…You’re not going to kill me, are you?"
This was so against protocol, but she was so tired and drowsy that her judgment wasn’t as sharp as it used to be.
