Types of Outdoor Cat Owners

The ‘It’s A Wild Animal’: For some reason believes that their cat, which has been domesticated for over 5,000 years, is actually still a wild animal. Will argue that cats should be free and wild because it’s ‘natural’. Probably won’t be able to explain why this doesn’t apply to dogs.

The ‘My Cat/s Lived X Years’: For some reason believes that because their own cats beat the odds, the danger of the outdoors is nonexistent. Likes to ignore the statistical information that shows on average that cats allowed to freeroam outdoors have a shorter lifespan than cats who aren’t.

The ‘My Cat Hardly Ever Kills’: Generally believes that whatever their cat brings back represents how much they are killing when cats actually do not bring back most of their kills.

The ‘My Cat Hates It Indoors’: Probably hasn’t done much to look up ways to convert outdoor cats into happy indoor cats. Probably also doesn’t provide their cat with enough stimulation and enrichment indoors.

The ‘Keeping Cats Indoors Is Cruel’: Probably doesn’t provide their cat with enough stimulation and enrichment indoors. Occasionally also just enjoys the perk of not having to scoop litter boxes. Basically, just wants to let the outdoors stimulate their cat rather than putting any actual time into doing so themselves. Will pretend they didn’t hear you if you bring up catios, cat harnesses, and cat fencing.

The ‘I Live In The Country’: Seems to have forgotten that wild animals exist. Probably doesn’t realize that some birds of prey are big enough to fly off with a cat.

The ‘I Don’t Live On A Busy Road’: Basically plays Russian roulette with their cat. Because it probably won’t be hit. Probably.

The ‘We Don’t Keep Cats Indoors Here’: Apparently thinks that where they live does not have any of America’s dangers and is, in fact, some sort of cat utopia.

Okay but i had an outdoor cat when we lived in small pocket area, he was happy, loved to explore, he never went where any traffic was and all the cars who passed through lived there and knew there were lots of kids and animals around a drove slowly. He would come home sometimes and we would feed and pet him, he was happy. Then we were forced to move to a busier place in town and had to keep him indoors. We tried paying attention to him, we bought him a cat tower and scratching post (we would’ve gotten more toys and junk but we were short on cash) and he was miserable. He would bite people all the time for no reason, everytime we opened the door he would try to rush out. I would let him walk around for a little while while I followed him to make sure he didn’t get into trouble, but I couldn’t do it all day everyday of course. We eventually gave him to a neighbor that still lived in that pocket area and he’s incredibly happy. Yes, some areas are not suited for outdoor cats, but if your cat is miserable inside no matter what you do, its best to find a safe place for it to live where it can be outside. Some cats need to roam, some cats need to climb things, some cats need to interact with other animals,some cats need to lay in the sun. Keeping my cat in a little 2 room apartment made him miserable.

this is such a good post because asking ppl if you can be friends can make them feel so uncomfortable but if you approach them like this its SO EASY to start a conversation and let a friendship develop naturally
