Current morning routine:

I've been trying to wake up before Evelyn, which is no easy task since we co-sleep and bed share.😉😅

I start my morning with a large glass of water and some body movement. Then, I read a chapter from my book as well as a devotional or 2. 📖

Once Evelyn is awake, I get her diaper changed and we'll read a few books. She is very relaxed and it's easier to read to her. Since she started crawling, she isn't a fan of sitting still. Lol

After story time, I get Evelyn and my breakfast ready. During this time, I'll usually put on Disney music and sing to her. Then I feed Evelyn. Once she's finished, I eat. Then I bring her into the living room and I put her in her swing or keep her in her high chair. I'll put on either Concerto or baby Einstein and put some toys for her to play with on her high chair.

Now I'm free to brew my morning coffee which I drink while power pumping and watching a show on my phone. ☕Evelyn usually falls asleep during this time for a short nap.

Once I'm done pumping, I get Evelyn cleaned up and dressed for the day. We'll play together or she'll breastfeed until it's time for her afternoon nap. 💤

12. Would you be a surrogate?

It's something I've honestly thought about doing. Ideally it would be after I was done having children and it would be for someone I knew. But it wouldn't necessarily have to be. I've also thought about donating my eggs. It breaks my heart that some their are women and men who desperately long to be parents, can't.

Embrace chaos.

14. Worst advice you were given.

The absolute worst was when I was struggling to breastfeed and everyone tried to shove using formula down our throats/questioning me on how much I was eating/telling us she was going to have permanent brain damage because she was starving. When in reality we were seeing the pediatrician and lactation consultant 2x a week and in no way was she ever in danger.

15. Did you stick to your birth plan?

No. I wanted a vaginal birth. And I wanted to hold off on an epidural for as long as possible. I considered not even getting one. I ended up having to have a C-section.

16. Did you have a theme for your nursery?

Yes, woodland animals. The colors were light blue, white and pink.

17. Did you read any pregnancy or parenting books?

Eh I flipped through what to expect when you're expecting. Mostly I read my pregnancy apps (The Bump) and researched on Google.

7. Due dates and birth dates for your child?

Due date was June 26, 2017. I gave birth via c-section July 3, 2017.

8. How many kids do you want?

I go back and forth on this a lot. Somedays I think I’ll be content with just Evelyn. Other days I want her to have a sibling or 2. I think 3 is the perfect number but we’ll see.

9. How many does your partner want?

10. Did you enjoy your pregnancy? Why?

YES. I loved every second of my pregnancy. I was extremely lucky not to have to deal with many of the not so fun aspects of pregnancy. Even the parts I didn’t enjoy, I still loved being pregnant. I cherished every single kick and hiccup. In fact at one of my last prenatal appointments I even told my doctor I could stay pregnant for another month at least. That’s how good I felt. Now I bet if I have another, I’ll get bombarded with every unfortunate pregnancy symptom out there. lol

11. Did you find out the sex of your child? Why/why not?

Yes. We found out together at our anatomy ultrasound. I wanted to know. I felt the unexpected pregnancy was enough of a surprise. If I do end up having 3 children, my hopes is the next is a boy so for my last pregnancy I want to be surprised since I’ll already have one of each.

I realized I haven’t done a journal post in awhile so I figured I’d catch up with you and share what’s been going on in our lives.

Christmas was absolutely magical. I hadn’t been this excited for Christmas since I was a little kid. Seeing Christmas through the eyes of my daughter was the most amazing thing. We didn’t do absolutely everything I wanted (cue mom guilt over not making Christmas cards) but I was able to focus on what mattered most: the quality time spent together as a family.

Then New Year’s came and we had a low key night just the 3 of us hanging out by the fireplace and laughing at the absurdity of New Year’s TV coverage. I came up with a decent number of goals for 2018. I didn’t make them resolutions because I think that sets people up for failure and feeling bad about themselves. Instead I’m calling them goals and I’m excited to see how many of my goals I accomplish this year. I’ll upload a picture of my goal board later on today if I don’t forget.

How is it that I’m able to talk to myself all day and come up with a million ideas of what I’d like to write but then I’m actually sitting down at the computer I’m at a loss for words??

Anyway, the biggest news is we are moving into our own apartment! A little background for those of you who don’t know: I got pregnant my senior year of college. A ton of people still have little direction on their lives after school and struggle financially and therefore move back in with their parents after school. Zach and I were in the same boat as everyone else plus with a baby added into the mix. I graduated from college May 13 and I gave birth to our daughter July 3rd. Living with my parents has been a blessing in the sense that it’s allowed me to postpone working and I’ve been basically a stay at home mom for the past six months. And for a lot of other reasons too. Still, we feel moving into our own place is the right decision. It’s scary and exciting at the same time. The apartment is small (cozy) but the location and price were right. And worst case scenario, things don’t work out we are not obligated to keep our one year lease. We do have to give 60 days notice but that’s it.

so...

i downloaded an app called "space" to help me set limits on how much time i spend on my phone & how many times I unlock it.

this app, along with "Flipd" (which locks me out completely for up to 30 min.) are 2 tools i'm using to assist me in meeting my goal of spending less time on my phone.

however, it's only day one and so far i'm not doing great. it's a huge wake up call to see precisely how many minutes i spend on my phone daily.

bear in mind i downloaded this app this afternoon.

New Years Resolutions.

I'm starting to contemplate what I would like to make as my new years resolution (s). I realize, most people don't follow through with their goals. Regardless, I'd like to try. Even if I don't accomplish what I want, I would consider progress to be a victory.

Without farther ado, here are some of my thoughts:

Body positivity/confidence/self-love/self-care

Decrease amount of screen time per day (increase time spent doing things that bring value to my life/technology can & does bring value to your life, but I don't want it to consume all my time)

Decluttering my life: letting go of excess "stuff"

Therapy went well this week. Sometimes I feel like we get too caught up in untangling the mess of my childhood rather than dealing with current issues. But today we spent a solid 20 minutes talking and coming up with a plan.

For this week, I'm going to focus on constructing a schedule for my day. I've noticed I've been so scatter brained lately that I'm having trouble with productivity. Not that you have to spend every second of the day doing something, but I would like to feel like I'm actively working towards my goals.

Let’s catch up

It’s been a few days since I’ve posted and I wanted to write about what’s been going on. So this weekend, Zach’s dad and stepmom flew in from Texas. His grandma also flew from New York to meet Evelyn. We actually had a really nice time visiting and I wish they had been able to stay longer. Zach and I are hoping to fly to Texas in February or so. Besides for 2 awkward “why don’t you get married?” talks, the weekend went smoothly. And his family adores Eveyln.

What started out as a cheat day turned into a cheat weekend turned into the death of my diet. I realized a few things. First, the motivation to lose weight isn’t there. I want to lose weight, but my mindset and will power isn’t there. And to go from no restrictions to full was a lot to undertake. Second, I realized I was quickly falling back into old unhealthy habits such as smelling food to avoid eating it and obsessing over every meal. And if I start down that path, who’s to say I won’t go farther? Who says I won’t get to the point where I’m counting calories, restricting foods, and a whole bunch of other nonsense.

I do not want to live that way. When faced with the choice of staying 10 lbs overweight for the rest of my life and spending every waking moment obsessing over food, I choose the weight. Because is fat really the worst possible thing you can be? HELL NO. Do I have a responsibility to model positive self esteem and habits for my daughter? Absofuckinglutely. Here’s what I’m left with:

I”m going to have days where I love my body and I’m going to have days where I hate it. I”m going to have days where my self esteem is in the gutter. And it’s on those days I need to pick myself up and tell myself I am beautiful. I’m beautiful at this weight and at any weight. I’m beautiful even when I don’t feel like I am.

Going forward, my goal is to make positive short term goals that add up over time. To substitute junk food with nutritious foods. Because it makes me feel GOOD. To move my body and exercise. Because it makes me feel GOOD. To love and accept myself. Because I DESERVE it.

21 days: day 4

So I'm back on track after my setback yesterday. For breakfast I had steel cut oats (yuck) mixed with a packet of peach instant oatmeal. I'm going to have to buy some more rolled oats because these steel cut oats are gross. Something about their texture I don't like.

For lunch I had some asparagus, salad, and a cup of leftover chili.

Dinner is going to be a cfa sandwich without the bun.

As of right now I'm not counting calories or points except for my cheat day when I'm giving myself a 2,500 calorie limit to eat whatever I want. I'm trying to just eat healthier foods and watch my portion sizes. The only thing food wise I've eliminated from my diet is bread. And even that I'm allowed to eat when I go out to lunch or dinner. Also, besides for coffee the only other thing I drink is water. I'm trying not to drink my calories.

I'm going to weigh myself tomorrow morning and access where I am.

It's such a tricky thing to diet when you have a history of dysfunctional eating habits. It's so easy to fall down the rabbit hole of bad eating, rules, counting calories, restricting, etc.

Another thing I don't like is how time consuming dieting becomes. I would rather just eat healthy like it's second nature to me rather than have to consciously choose and plan out my means. I don't want to think about food 24/7.

21 days: day 3

I had a minor setback this morning with breakfast. I gave into temptation and ate a few things I shouldn't have.

Do I? :

a. Eat like crap the rest of the day because since I ate bad this morning that means the whole day is ruined.

b. Accept I made a mistake because I'm human and eat healthy the rest of the day.

I'm going with b obviously. Currently eating some asparagus. Mmmmmmm...

Rest of lunch is another salad with a boiled egg. I might add some strawberries.

I'm not sure what dinner will be. Remember if you mess up, you still need to eat the rest of the day. You don't need to give up on your plans to eat healthy and you don't need to punish yourself with exercise to "made up" for what you ate.

21 days: day 2

According to research, it takes at least 21 days to form a habit. 21 days until what you do becomes routine. I've read it can take 66 days to make that habit stick. Since 21 days is much less intimidating number we'll go with that. It's day 2 and I'm already wanting to quit...

For breakfast I had 1 packet of instant oatmeal (apple cinnamon) mixed with ~1/2 cup of rolled oats. I cut up a small apple and added half of it. Ate the other half.

For lunch I sauteed 2 carrots with a capful of vegetable oil and a little bit of butter. As well as pepper, garlic, thyme, and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. It didn't turn out the greatest. I'm not a huge fan of carrots but I ate it.

Snack was 1/2 cup of pistachios and a teaspoon of peanut butter.

The rest of my lunch is another basic salad with a hard boiled egg. I might add some strawberries for my second fruit of the day.

Dinner will be chili. I won't be able to eat the cornbread or the coconut cream pie that's for dessert. But I'm going to have Zach put a small slice of it away for my cheat day. WHICH IS 4 DAYS AWAY HALLELUJAH!! Cheat days are normal part of diets right?? I'm not just asking for a binging problem right? I need to look into that.

My goal is to lose a pound to 1.5 pounds a week. More than that and I'm asking for trouble. Losing weight is especially tricky with the holiday season, the fact that I'm breastfeeding so my appetite is enormous (I legit want to eat everything in sight) and my history of dysfunctional eating habits. Anyone got any tips for me?

Monday ramblings

I wasn't able to make it to my therapy appointment. She had to reschedule due to her son getting sick. I will hopefully go Thursday.

It's only day 1 of my DIEt and I already want to DIE. lol( just kidding.) I do however want to eat everything in sight.

I decided to give myself one cheat day per week to indulge. Since for whatever reason I like restarting diets on Mondays, my normal cheat day will be Sundays. Except for special occasions like Zach's family coming to visit or Thanksgiving.

I will stash away food I can't normally eat for my cheat day. For example, I had Zach hide 4 Hershey kisses. Rather than tell myself I can NEVER eat the things I want, I only have to make it to my cheat day.

All these "rules" are obviously going to change once I've lost weight.

Light therapy is still disappointing. I haven't really noticed a difference.

Also slacking on disconnecting from technology....

My goals for tomorrow will be GRE study plan, disconnecting from my phone, and checking my voicemail. For some odd reason I have major anxiety over checking my voicemail.

Anyone have any healthy carrot recipes? I made baked zucchini today and it was delicious!

Healthy eating: day one

For breakfast I had one packet of maple brown sugar instant oatmeal mixed with rolled oats. I'm going to continue eating oatmeal because it helps with my milk supply. Oatmeal is so yummy and keeps me full for hours. Yeah, carbs, I know. But I'm trying. I'm mixing old fashioned oats with the instant so it's not as sugary. Anyone have any oatmeal recipes? I tried making my own with steel cut oats and I realized I was adding so much sugar anyway.😬

For lunch, I had baked zucchini. I tried a baked recipe using bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, garlic and pepper. It turned out pretty good too! After Evy's appointment I'll eat the rest of my lunch which is a basic salad with a hard boiled egg.

For a snack I had a banana and a teaspoon of peanut butter. I might have a snack of pistachios later on if I'm hungry.

Diner is ham bbq, scalloped potatoes and peas. I'm going to eat my ham bbq without a bun (weird but idk what else to do). I'm also going to substitute a sweet potato instead of the scalloped. I'll eat the peas though.

Sunday ramblings

I'm ready to take another stab at eating healthy and losing that last 10 lbs of pregnancy weight. Although I've been working on self love a lot lately. I've come to the conclusion, I do want to be my pre-pregnancy weight again. And I think I can be body positive and try to lose weight too. I don't have to choose one or the other. It's not like my goal is to be the weight I was in 10th grade.

My "diet" isn't going to be about restricting or eating bland food. It's about eating good, nutritious food that gives my body energy. When I eat fast food and processed foods, I'm sluggish and depressed.

So the first step is to weigh myself. I think I'll give myself a week of eating well before I take a look at the damage. Maybe I won't even weigh myself. It's just a number. It shouldn't mean so much. It would help me measure my progress but there's other ways of doing that. Tape measure, before and after pictures, how my clothes fit, etc. So maybe I'll skip it.

Next step is planning my meals. I want to reduce the amount of carbs and added sugars I eat. I think I'm going to give up bread. Not entirely though. If I'm going out to eat, you can bet your butt I'm gonna eat that breadstick. But at home I think I'll give up bread and get my carbs from non-bread sources like oatmeal and potatoes.

I want to eat a more plant based diet. I don't want to go vegetarian but I want to stick to eating meat only once a day. If that. I want to eat at least 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit a day.

Foods I have to work with this week: lettuce, carrots, zucchini, asparagus, bananas, strawberries, apples, eggs, and sweet potatoes.

Since my parents cook dinners, I only have to worry about breakfast and lunch.

Breakfast will probably be oatmeal and a piece of fruit.

Lunch this week will be some combination of the veggies i listed.

I definitely want to get as much protein as I can. Eventually I want to start lifting.

Does anyone have any tips for beginners? Weight lifting and/or meal prep?
