I do not want to encourage rumours, but I would also like to know the answer to this.
The best part of April’s day was when the bell above the diner door tingled, signalling the departure of her last customer. She listened for that sound with keen ears as it meant she could scurry out from her hiding place in the kitchen, her apron splattered with a myriad of sauces and condiments, and thank her employees for the hard work they’d put in throughout the day. She supposed some had earned more commendation than others, but she could barely stutter out her gratitude in general, never mind grant a special acknowledgment to those who deserved it. As each of the waiters and waitresses clocked out and waved goodbye, she remained where she was on one of the stools, tallying up the profits of the day and logging it in the book before finally hopping off her seat and grabbing her mop as soon as she was alone.
As much as she was proud of her diner and the footfall it brought with it, she enjoyed this hour of the day more than anything else. As she plunged her mop into the bucket of water at her side then brought it to the tiles with a wet slap, she was able to immerse herself in her own little bubble, free of the anxiety that came with a bustling hubbub of customers demanding her attention and a well braised Philly Cheesesteak. This hour was quiet, this hour was hers to drink in the atmosphere of her diner that she’d worked so hard to build.
As she cleaned spilled ketchup and scrambled egg from the floor, making a mental note to wipe down the tables after, she began humming slowly to herself. The song brought with it a familiar melancholy ache in her chest as well as nostalgic thoughts about her mother, but thankfully that same ache had dulled over time.
“Lavender’s blue, dilly dilly, lavender’s green,” she sang softly to herself. “When I am king, dilly dilly, you’ll be my queen.”
She swayed lightly on the spot, careful not to step in the puddle of water she left in her wake as she knew her lack of motor skills and just general clumsiness would end up making her slip and land on her bum. And she was already nursing more than a few injuries from the deep fat fryer that day.
The emptiness of the diner only made her confidence grow, and as her confidence grew so did the volume of her singing until she was belting out the song with little care about disrupting the silence. Her complete disregard for her surroundings would ultimately be her downfall as she completely failed to pick up on the ringing of the bell above the door, still singing and swaying and twirling as she moved the mop across the floor. It was only when she heard a pointed clearing of a throat behind her, that she allowed the mop to clatter to the ground.
Gasping aloud, blood rushing to her cheeks, she didn’t even bother whirling around to see who the intruder was. Instead, she dived behind the counter, upturning a tray of spoons in her wake and wincing when her knees landed painfully on them. As she fought to get her breath back, she lifted trembling fingers up to grip the edge of the counter, granting her the leverage she needed to peek over the top of it with wide brown eyes at the stranger standing there.
“I’m s-sorry,” she called to him, ducking right back down when he turned her way. “We’re actually closed. I’m sorry!”
His dusty, grease-ridden boots padding along the platform, Theodore let out a long sigh as he stared around him. All platforms within his sight had been entirely vacated by now, with the last train of the evening having just rolled on through, and it was time for Teddy to call it a day. The strap of his bag hastily slung over his shoulder, the soft brown leather tinged from top to bottom in a mixture of engine oil and soot, he exited the station and fumbled clumsily for the key in his pocket. Pulling it free from the mountain of candy wrappers, as well as weird and wonderful souvenirs he'd managed to wrangle to give to Ethan, he unlocked the chain that secured his bicycle to the fence outside, and hopped on as he readied himself to go home.
With his legs pumping rapidly as he pedalled through the dark, empty streets of the city, Teddy pondered over the strange sense of melancholy that was rippling through him. He hadn't had a difficult day at work, nor had he had any bad encounters, and yet the emptiness in his chest remained. In fact, he'd had a relatively enjoyable day, and had been lucky enough to encounter a whole plethora of delightful people from various different walks of life – some locals, and some who were only visiting the city on vacation.
He supposed it might be a fair assumption to make that, perhaps, those cheery encounters were, in fact, the source of his discomfort, in a peculiar sort of way. Meeting people who had travelled from so far just to see new cities only made him yearn for his home back in Russia, and for the life he'd previously known. Of course, usually when he found himself in these moments of nostalgia, missing a home that could never be his, and a family that had long since forgotten him, he would turn to his nearest and dearest. After his less than amicable break up with Leonard, who had discarded him without so much as a second glance, he'd found himself withdrawn once more, much too shy to confide in even Wren, Harper, or Ryke, for fear of inevitably scaring off the few, most charming friends that he had been lucky enough to to gain.
With the cap atop his head in danger of being whisked away as he tore down the street, the chill of the evening wind whipping across his face, he edged ever closer to the Messina apartment complex and, in a last moment of uncertainty, steered himself in the opposite direction and opted not to return home just yet. Instead, he decided he would pay Smith a visit, and see if his friends was, perhaps, in the mood for a little company. Smith was, among others, one of the many friends he'd acquired over the years since leaving Russia, and he'd most certainly consider the man to be one of his best friends – though Wren, Owen, Harper, Ryke, and baby Loanie shared that title – and he often found himself turning to the other moment in moments of duress, or whenever he found himself in need of a distraction and a friendly face.
Spotting the Diner in the glow of the surrounding street lamps, Teddy dropped one foot from the pedal, letting the sole of his boot glide along the pavement until he eventually skidded to a stop. Then, propping the two-wheeler up against the side of the building, he smiled up at it fondly. He'd had many wonderful encounters in this diner, never quite managing to find a better meal anywhere else in the city – no matter how hard he tried – and already he could feel his spirits lifting. He knew that they weren't technically open for business anymore, not at this hour, but he often found Smith still inhabiting one of the booths even after hours, and thought that he might try his luck once more.
With the handle of the door twisting easily under his grasp, a wild smile spread its way across his face as he carefully pushed his way into the dimly lit diner, only to stop short when he realised that there seemed to be music coming from the restaurant.
How odd.
Still, vaguely unperturbed, he pushed on and glanced around for any sign of his friend, a soft smile playing on his lips as the unfamiliar voice echoed through the room. While finding no sign of Smith, his curiosity piqued, Teddy finally found the source of the music, his eyes landing on a woman dancing her way around the room. That same, soft smile only grew wider as he watched her twirl herself along the shining tiles, expertly swinging her mop around her as she went. He hadn't ever seen her before, and he could only assume she was an employee – and if not, he wasn't certain how to break the news to Smith that he'd walked in on a rather generous, softly sung burglar with a proclivity for cleaning.
When it became all too evident that the woman in question hadn't noticed him standing there, Teddy cleared his throat by way of grabbing her attention, only to have startled the poor woman, and in turn shocking even himself. He watched as she, back still turned to him, dove out of sight, loud crashes and clangs following her actions, and he winced at having inadvertently caused her humiliation.
Luckily, she soon rose from her hiding place, a tiny, rosy-cheeked face peeking out from behind the counter top to stare at him.
“I am very sorry, I did not mean to startle you!” he called out.
Logic should tell him that he was being polite, and that his words would hold some value, but his anxiety was begging his vocal chords to remain gentle, so as not to further alarm the stranger.
“I did not mean to interrupt your performance,” Teddy chuckled, unable to help himself. He had been rather delightfully endeared, and he hoped she wasn't too embarrassed. “I am actually here to see Smith.”
On that note, he only hoped she would understand his predicament, and perhaps point him in the right direction. While he was confident enough to know that he had meant no ill-harm on the girl, he couldn't blame her if she were uncomfortable with an intrusion upon her time alone, and he imagined she would be none too pleased to send him on his way.
“He is my friend,” he added, almost as though to further reassure her.

I love my job! #choochoo :)
.dykcarter:
Soon, because I’m quite frankly surprised that it hasn’t already happened. You’re really experienced then, aren’t you? I don’t think you’re showing off, that’s actually all so interesting. I’m still just a student. I’m studying forensics.
Oh that’s... You have made me blush again, Carter! How very kind. But yes, I suppose you could say so? I do work hard, but don’t we all? Thank you. Forensics? That’s very exciting, actually... You must be incredibly intelligent.
.dykcarter:
Well, I know you’re going to find someone too. And soon, I think. That’s really interesting, actually! What do you do? Are you a conductor? Do you drive the trains?
Soon? One can only hope, though I doubt that. But thank you. Ah, yes! I am a conductor, but I also work in mechanics. And, I am training to be a driver, also. My mother told me that I am showing off now, but I do enjoy being out there so much. But pardon me, I am being so rude. What about you?
.dykcarter:
Oh, I’m glad! You think someone is going to think I shine? That’s really sweet of you, Teddy. Oh, do you work with trains?
Yes, I most definitely do think so. How could they not? Yes, I do indeed! It is probably not exciting to most, but I love it very much.
.dykcarter:
You don’t look silly. You’re looking how I was hoping you would look instead of telling me I’m getting involved in business that isn’t mine. You shouldn’t give up. But it’s alright, I think I’m okay with not being in a relationship. I’m not sure I could invest a lot of time in one anyway. Trust me, I might take you up on that offer, especially since all of my own friends are the ones in danger of causing a fire hazard.
I do not? Good... Well, I wouldn’t tell you that! I think it is nice that you are so kind and caring. It makes me feel good. Hm, that makes sense. Well, one day if you are ready I am sure that there will be somebody lovely who will think you shine, Carter. That’s good, though I must apologise in advance if I ever show up looking as though I have come from a fire. Because I can clarify that any black dust on my clothing is from a train, and not because I have taken a liking to your other friends’ strange hobbies!
.dykcarter:
Yes, that’s definitely the articulate way of putting it, thank you. I don’t think that’s necessarily a fair analysis of yourself. You’re one of the nicest people I’ve ever spoken to, so it seems difficult to believe that people wouldn’t want to keep you around… if that’s alright to say. Oh, if I let them stress themselves out then something is bound t go on fire, so.
Oh, you... you think so? That is very kind, Carer. That is definitely alright to say, you are very sweet. And now I cannot stop smiling and blushing and I probably look very silly. I do not have a good track record with keeping any of the people that I love in my life, but I will not give up. You, also, Carter. You will find someone, I believe that. Oh! Fires are not the way to go. Well, if you ever get too stressed and you need an escape, I am more than happy to, um, be that escape for you. If you so wish. Though, I am sure you have plenty of your own friends that can help you so perhaps I am being foolish!
.dykcarter:
I mean, he has a lot of somebodys but not in a… strictly romantic sense. If you get what I’m saying. Why don’t you have a lot of luck? You seem really nice. But yes, sorry. I’m alright, I’m fine. Sometimes everyone else’s love life sort of stresses me out, that’s all.
Oh, I see. He is more, um... Well, perhaps not a fan of monogamy? Me? Um. I think I am the kind of person that... People do not want to stick around for, or... want to keep around, or... whatever the right thing to say is, I don’t know. Sorry, I got carried away. But if you are sure you are alright? Do not let them stress you out, Carter. Focus on you, let them stress themselves out instead.
.dykcarter:
I think we can conclude that girls give the best hugs and get the best grades. Although, you are a very good hugger as well. Jess… doesn’t have somebody, no. I don’t know if Jess really wants anybody. And I know, but they’re both so stubborn that it’s hard to get them to admit it. And I suppose that perhaps they’re worried if they do admit it then it’ll change everything… And maybe they aren’t sure their feelings are real or if they’re just projecting or… or maybe they’re scared.
Thank you, Teddy. And you’re right. Romance… is extremely difficult to navigate.
Definitely. And as are you! He does not want anybody? That is very sad. I do not think I have had a lot of luck in that area, but it’s nice to love people. It feels good, and being loved back feels even better, I would imagine. Yes, they do sound it... But, um. Carter, are you ok? You look... Distressed.
That it is. Worth it when it works, but very difficult to navigate.
.dykcarter:
Definitely. All the girls I know are the most intelligent people I’ve ever met. Cassie is just one of my best friends, yes. Who Kevin has a crush on and I’m not entirely sure how she feels about him. I think that’s the best way to describe Jess and Angelica even though they’ve both told me there’s nothing romantic there. Plus, Angelica has just met Rose and they seem to get on really well. I think Katie is fond of Seth, but neither of them will admit it to each other, which can be frustrating.
As for me… I’m sort of just there. I don’t have any sort of romantic attachments.
Yes, me too! My friend Wren is very intelligent, and another person who gives wonderful hugs! Kevin likes Cassie, but we don’t know how Cassie feels, check! Alright. And, oh. So Angelica has a somebody, which means... Does Jess? Or no? And, right. Okay, yes. It is very frustrating when two friends care so deeply, like that. It’s sad because... if they just admitted their feelings, maybe they could be happy?
Well, you are not just there. You are there being a good friend, and a wonderful person. That is something. Romantic attachments are not always what they are, um, cracked up to be.
.dykcarter:
Angelica is better at getting herself out of trouble than Jess and Seth are. So I don’t need to look after her as well. Jess does like Katie, but Seth likes Katie if… if you get what I mean. And it’s alright, I don’t mind answering them. Sometimes explaining our crazy group dynamic helps me as well.
That, I think, is because girls tends to be a lot smarter, don’t you agree? Ha. Oh! Oh. So... Let me get this correct? You and Cassie are just friends, but... Kevin, he likes Cassie? And Cassie does not like Kevin? And then, Jess... He is your best friend, and he and Angelica have... Hm, a strange and incestuous relationship, pardon me for saying so. And then there is Katie, and Seth. And Seth is fond of Katie, but... Is Katie fond of Seth?
And... if I may, what about you?
.dykcarter:
That’s certainly what I’m known as. I definitely feel too young but no one else will do it. Angelica encourages them, and Jess doesn’t listen to Katie. Only Seth does.
Yes, that’s definitely it. It’s normal, I’m sure.
Angelica sounds like she enjoys it, is she as troublesome as they are? Ha. Why does only Seth listen to Katie? Does Jess not like her? I think I am asking too many questions, and being nosy...
Yes, nothing to worry about!
.dykcarter:
Um… in a way I’m teasing. But the pair of them find themselves in bother a lot more than they should and it’s my job to get them out of it. It’s a bit like having children. And we are good friends, I live with Jess. He’s my best friend.
Don’t worry, we all get confused by Jess and Angelica’s relationship. It didn’t sound like an accusation, don’t worry! It’s been pointed out to me before.
Oh, so you’re the responsible friend. That is good. They sound like a lot of fun, though... maybe a little stressful! You don’t feel a little too young to be parenting your best friend?
Oh, at least I am not alone then! It’s nice, though, as he is your best friend. I think we all tend to talk about our best friends a lot. It just means you care, and think about him a lot, and that is sweet.
