That new Skyrim show sure is something huh
One very important aspect of Max's character that Aaron keeps bringing up in interviews is that Max has been abused most of his life. And I think it's a very fundamental part of his character that the fandom isn't taking into account nearly enough. Max has been abused, both physically and mentally, in the Brotherhood of Steel ever since he lost his family and his entire community as a young child.
We saw in season 1 how the Brotherhood beats and whips people for disobedience and how they literally brand people. He's not the only victim of this, the Brotherhood faction he's part of literally practice institutionalized abuse. But not only that, the first time we meet his character, he is beaten and bullied by the other Brotherhood aspirants, something we learn later on he was a specific target of, as the other members viewed him as an outcast because he came from Shady Sands.
Not to mention, he spent almost fifteen years trying to appease Quintus, who he viewed as a father figure and who constantly intimidated, abused, and used him. But despite that, the Brotherhood was the only source of safety and comfort for him until he met Lucy. Being able to walk away from it all took tremendous strength.
