Eli Zabar (the brother...) fought his way to open catering-restaurants when his brothers didn’t let him co-preside their father’s successful company. It is fair to say he know owns the UES’ palates. For nearly 30 years, next to one of Eli’s EAT, EAT Gifts has been offering all-that-you-need food and drink accessories with taste and... humor.

Creative Americana for whiskey lovers (how about some roasted oysters?). Modern decor and nice service make it a good address in the Flatiron/Chelsea area, for food, drinks or both. 26 St between broadway and 6 Ave.

SPOT DESSERT BAR

Ii’s not easy to find good dessert spots in NYC. This is one. Litterally and culinarily. Japanese inspiration does magic in this 100% dessert restaurant with (very) limited seating. St Marks Place, between 2nd and 3rd Ave.

NY’s very own pit master comes from Houston, TX. Arguably the best bbq in the city, Mighty Quinn’s surely has a tasty meat to offer in all the traditional shapes and forms (brisket!!!). Get your basket ready! Seven locations in NY: 4 in Manhattan, 3 in Brooklyn.

Creative Japanese fast food around rice, pasta, burgers and buns. Tasty and simple, a great alternative for a quick lunch in Chelsea, UES or Bryant Park. Don’t miss the Wasabi mayo.

WALDY’S WOOD FIRED PIZZA AND PENNE

Pizzas that look like flatbread and taste like “oh yeah”. Fresh herbs (or dry if you’re weird) and three sorts of oil are available for your own seasoning taste. The place is tiny though, 10 seats max. Better to-go. 6th Ave, between 27and 28 St.

CHOP SHOP

A traditionnal Asian restaurant with a pure decor and a rather Thai-inspired menu. The food feels made by true Asian chefs, because it is. Service is nice and quick. Hard to see what not to like... Two locations in Chelsea: 24th St between 5 and 6 Ave, or 5 Ave between 24 and 25 St. Watch the opening times.

RIZZOLI BOOKSTORE

One of NY’s favorite bookstore just moved to Chelsea (another victim of NY skyrocketting rents), on Broadway between 25 and 26 St. The great taste of the selection remains the same. Wide choice and range of prices. Their events are great too.

BLACK IRON BURGER

Voted Best burger in NYC or in the Top 3 multiple times over the past 5 years, this dark place offers a creative and tasty take on the traditional American meal. You probably won’t go there for the quality of the service but the incredible taste of the organic meat. And these delicious slim fries... Three locations: two around 7th Ave (28 or 38th St level) and one on 5th St and Ave B.

This independent store has a knack for finding spot-on inexpensive gifts that the future owner will undoubtedly find enjoyable, probably funny, even memorable. It’s also a vibrant part of the Cobble/Boerum Hill areas in Brooklyn. Smith, between Dean and Pacific St.

TASCA CHINO

Fusion food is still around. Sometimes for the worst, but not always. In this case, Spanish and Chinese dishes make a happily married couple. Some sort of Tapas-Dim Sum if you will. The decor, retro 50s, has the elegant atmosphere of an old-fashioned Chinese club, with the colors of the South of Spain. Park, between 19th and 20th St.

BATHTUB GIN

Everyone probably knows what’s really hiding behind the secret door of that Dunkin Donut-looking coffee place. Especially because it is not very common to see bouncers checking your ID to get a donut. The dark room offers magnificent cocktails prepared with taste and creativity by a picky team. And yes, there is a tub. 9th St, between 18th and 19th St.

LUZZO’S

In a city known as the world’s pizza capital, it’s very ambitious to claim that one restaurant is the best. Even though, Luzzo’s is probably that restaurant and I can’t explain why. Tested several times, never deceived. The menu is wide, the products are Italian and fresh, the oven is wood fired, the talent is present. 1st Ave, between 12th and 13th St.

BLACK SEED BAGELS

At first sight, you’re not quite sure why a Swiss chalet would be so good at baking bagels. But the hand rolled, wood fired oven baked bread pieces will make any doubt of yours vanish in an instant. Very fish oriented, the ingredients list also offers the more traditional ham, cream cheese and bacon. Get crazy, make your own, and add eggs. Elizabeth, between Spring and Kenmare St.

LADUREE RESTAURANT

Chic a la Française, amazing teas, fresh tasteful macarons, open patio, chocolates, beautiful people, elegant service... Hard to find something unpleasant at Laduree. Except maybe having to wait for a table, precisely because everyone knows how great it is. I recommend the Soho location, W Broadway, between Spring and Broome St.

THE PARK

Lunch with tiny birds, dinner around the fireplace, this restaurant’s name doesn’t do justice to its hidden treasures. The food is modern American, the crowd quite diverse, finally. Recommended if you’re in the neighborhood. 10th Ave, between 17th and 18th St.
