In Another Life Headcanons (Basically things I've thought of but haven't been able to weave into the story)
Yelena used to run track and field and was one of the best runners in her middle school. When she got third in the nationals she quit because she hated that she wasn't the best. Yelena's always been a sore loser haha.
It's briefly alluded to, but Yelena was bullied as a kid due to her overly zealous opinions and bizarre interests and beliefs.
An example of this: Yelena wanted to grow up fast and after she turned 6, decided she was too old for cartoons and pretended she didn't like them anymore to appear more mature. She, of course, still watched them in secret but she would tell her classmates she didn't and would berate them for watching them, calling them childish (and then she wondered why she was bullied haha).
When Ymir was a kid she used to spend most of her time at Yelena's and struggled with Granny's death almost as much as Yelena did (though she never talks about it except to Historia)
Onyankopon's mom is a doctor and dad is a psychiatrist. He has one older brother.
Other than her father, Pieck's only other relative is her aunt (father's sister) and a younger cousin.
This is mentioned a lot, but Yelena is inherently selfish. Everything she does, she does for herself (sometimes without even realizing it).
On the flip side, Pieck has a martyr complex and everything she does, she does for other people at her own expense. She's the type of person that would set herself on fire if it meant it kept other people warm.
Both of them do these things as a means of feeling like they have some sort of control over their lives.
Pieck likes all sorts of music but mostly gravitates towards pop and rock, usually keeping it upbeat
Yelena likes rap but she'll never admit to it haha. She dislikes country.
When Yelena started dating Pieck, she never bothered to inform her former lovers that she wasn't interested in seeing them anymore. Instead, she just blocked all their numbers. It wasn't because she was afraid of confrontation, but simply because she couldn't be bothered to tell them otherwise.
Pieck's favorite season is fall and Yelena's is winter
Pieck's a blanket hog
Yelena is very opinionated and Pieck finds this amusing.
Yelena has always had a temper, but she got better at controlling it as she got older. She's the type that gets quiet when she's really mad
Pieck is the opposite. It usually takes a lot for her to get angry and even when she does, she will step away to cool off before saying anything
Pieck enjoys asking Yelena 'what if' scenarios and hearing her responses

It's crazy to think it's been that long already! While going through some of these headcanons I revisited some of my earlier chapters and cringed a bit. I definitely feel like my writing has improved tremendously over the last two years and I plan on eventually going back and rewriting the earlier chapters. That probably won't be for some time though.

SFW Headcanons: (Canon universe, some heavier topics)
They knew each other before the time skip and had a secret relationship. It was complicated and started off as mostly sexual. Both had feelings for each other but neither of them saw the point in expressing it due to the nature of their lives and the impossibilities of their relationship
They strategically do things to keep each other alive because even after the time skip, they still care for each other.
For example:
- I think it was Yelena's idea to stick Pieck and Porco in the Titan hole during the raid on Marley. She told the scouts it was to dispose of two of the titans during the battle but in actuality Yelena did it to keep them safe (Pieck, because Yelena has feelings for her and Porco because Yelena knows Pieck cares for him).
- On the roof top of the military HQ in Shiganshina, Yelena doesn't give the order to shoot even after it became clear Pieck was leading them into a trap. I always thought that was interesting and because Yelena didn't want to kill Pieck.
- Pieck convinced Magath that they needed to save Yelena due to her intel on Eren. In actuality, I think she wanted another chance to see Yelena and possibly talk to her
- Part of me thinks Yelena refused to tell the group where Eren was going because she wanted to protect Pieck but then another part of me thinks Yelena was just being stubborn because her plans were ruined and she was pouting like a child. I think it could be a bit of both.
I think they have a conversation both after the camp fire argument (when everyone has gone to sleep) and on the ship after Yelena tells the group where she thinks Eren is going. During these conversations they air out their grievances and I think Yelena tries to convince Pieck not to go after Eren as she believes it's a suicide mission. Pieck knows Yelena may be right but at this point she doesn't care. Her term is ending soon and with her father presumably dead, she has no reason to stay behind and survive (in her opinion). Yelena believes Pieck is still fighting for Marley despite Pieck arguing otherwise.
I believe that Yelena's disillusion with Marley had something to do with realizing Eldian's weren't these monsters Marley claimed them to be. I think this happened before she met Pieck.
Pieck didn't know Yelena and Zeke were working together but she had suspicions. When Yelena and the survey ship went missing, Pieck presumes her suspicions were wrong until after she sees Yelena again during the Liberio raid.
Yelena was a coffee drinker until she went to Paradis where she grew a fondness for tea
Yelena is older than Pieck by a couple of years (maybe 2 or 3).
Pieck has a fascination with eyes. She thinks they can tell a lot about a person. She finds Yelena's eyes particularly interesting and it's what gives Yelena away in Liberio. Yelena guessed as much, and avoids meeting Pieck's eyes until she cuts the rope for this reason
Pieck holds a lot of guilt when members from her Panzer unit die. She took the first group that died the hardest and learned to emotionally distance herself after that.
I think Pieck never believed the Marleyan propaganda, even as a child. She was never that naiive of blissfully ignorant and always envied those who were
I think Pieck has trouble hating Marley/Marleyans and the rest of the world. No matter how hard she tries, she can't view people as simply good or bad (even the Paradisians she holds no hate for). She's aware human nature is more nuanced and complicated than that and part of her even understands the worlds fear and hatred towards Eldians. She wishes things were different and desires change, but can't bring herself to want to blindly burn the whole world down. She thinks there's a better way to create change and free Eldians from persecution even if she hasn't figured out what yet.
I think at the end of the series, Yelena ends up in jail and Pieck visits her somewhat regularly
Regardless of whether they are good or bad for each other, they can't help but gravitate towards one another. They both find the other fascinating and have a mutual respect for one another, even if they don't agree on certain things
They both want change but go about it in different ways. Yelena has a seemingly personal vendetta against Marley and wants to see it burned to the ground where as Pieck doesn't quite feel so strongly. She believes Marley is wrong and wants the Eldian people to be freed of persecution, but she is aware the prejudice goes far beyond Marley and believes change can't be brought on quickly through grand displays of rebellion. They often have heated discussions about this and Pieck will berate Yelena for being naïve and privileged as Yelena often comments that Pieck isn't doing enough to save the Eldian race.
While Yelena doesn't necessarily want to wipe out the Eldian race (she doesn't think they deserve to die or suffer the way they do), the pragmatic part of her understands the world's fear of Eldians and she believes that the euthanasia plan is the best and only path to ensure the suffering ends with the least amount of pain in the process. She is further set in this belief after the rumbling and nothing anyone says can change her mind. Her and Pieck argue about this a lot post-rumbling because Pieck believes Yelena uses this self righteous excuse as a way to justify her actions. Pieck thinks Yelena was only after the fame and glory of 'saving' the world and in that sense, she is partially right though it's more nuanced than that.
SFW Alternate Universe Headcanons (these are much more fluffy)
Pieck likes crime shows and reality TV
Yelena prefers reading books over watching TV, but there are a few shows she watches with Pieck
Pieck falls in love first but Yelena falls in love harder
This is a silly headcanon, but I can't help but imagine Yelena wearing flashy and sometimes ridiculous looking Hawaiian shirts when she's on holidays 😂 maybe even socks and sandals (I've been meaning to draw this at some point)
Yelena dresses mostly androgynous, but on rare occasions will dress in more feminine clothes
Yelena is so smitten with Pieck she pretty much does whatever she wants. Pieck knows this and sometimes uses it to her advantage.
They are both practical with money
They both know how to cook, but Pieck is often the one doing the cooking since Yelena works late
Pieck loves kids but she doesn't want any of her own. She prefers to spoil her friends' kids and babysit for them. Best of both worlds as she says. This works, because Yelena never wanted kids either. She's too worried she'll screw them up.
They don't argue too often, but when they do it usually simmers for a few days before it blows up. Yelena can be incredibly mean with her words, and Pieck has walked out before. They eventually agreed to go to couple's counselling to learn to communicate better. Yelena still slips up sometimes, but she's not as bad as she used to be.
Pieck has a sweet tooth and a particular weakness for chocolate
Pieck has dinner with her dad once a week. Yelena comes when she can.
Yelena is almost always the first one awake and the last one to go to sleep. She struggles with insomnia.
They have a cat. Pieck found and adopted it despite Yelena's protests (she didn't want any pets). Now the cat is more Yelena's than Pieck's haha
Pieck sometimes struggles with depression. Yelena dotes on her extra during these times.
When Pieck falls asleep on the couch, Yelena will sometimes carry her to bed

When they travel, they often hit up the local museum

Yelena has a vegetable and flower garden that she tends to every summer.
Pieck has plants in the house that she takes care of. She prefers it over a garden because she hates weeding despite Yelena insisting it's therapeutic.
Yelena owns a handgun that she keeps in an unlocked lock box under the bed. She claims its for safety but Pieck thinks otherwise. She's given up arguing about it though and her only condition is that Yelena locks the box and puts it up somewhere safe when the kids are over.
Yelena is more possessive than Pieck, but not overly so

Yelena is more uptight and prissy than Pieck. It doesn't come up often in their everyday lives, but it shows through when they travel or go camping.
Yelena actually hates camping but will go because Pieck enjoys it. She won't use an outhouse though and refuses to go more than a day without showering.
When they travel Yelena HAS to bring a pillow from home otherwise she can't sleep. She claims the hotel pillows are uncomfortable. She's also the first to complain to staff if she finds even the smallest thing wrong with the hotel room, much to Pieck's embarrassment
House hunting with Yelena was a nightmare and Pieck never wants to do it again. Yelena fired multiple realtors before Pieck finally stepped in and took control of the process
Yelena demands routine and gets grumpy if anything disturbs it. Pieck finds this amusing.
They do their grocery shopping together
They dated a long time before deciding to get married. It was a small ceremony. Yelena was the one to propose
Yelena's relationship with her parents is nearly non existent. Pieck doesn't push it.
Pieck likes to be the big spoon. Yelena doesn't have a preference
