Ok so you wanna animate something with motion effects, or swishes, or whatever ya wanna call it.. Let’s do it. Let’s start off with a lightsaber, because lightsabers are neat as shit.

perfect. now to add the animation- let’s make a spinning attack! Let’s show off some sick animating skills!

uh... that’s not what we expected. That looks more like a propeller blade than an attack. how can we fix this???

maybe a sense of motion? Let’s try to add some swishes to the blade, to indicate motion:

okay not bad, but not great. I added in a start and a stop to give it more of a “story” and changed the frame total to 10 frames, adding 6 onto the last gif. This shows speed, that’s for sure, but it doesn’t really give off the feeling we’re looking for; the speeds feel static and not as though the lightsaber is speeding up and slowing down. Let’s try altering the little swishes to fix what’s missing:

nice! it’s still not perfect- ideally the center would have more of an oval shape, but the action is clear here, and it’s easy to discern the speed at each point in the animation. Let’s compare with the beginning:

In all fairness I did make a few more edits to the gif on the left, but regardless, adding in a sense of motion makes a huge difference! In cases where high speeds aren’t used, it’s easier to use squash and stretch to show off speed, but adding in motion blurs and other effects are crucial to scenes with lots of action.

Now get animating!
