Blacks weren’t meant to show such fears, nor to admit them to a possible enemy but in a way, he was free from his family. There was no mother to punish him, no father to stare down at him in thinly veiled disgust for his lack of masculinity. No big brother’s shadow he was always forced to be enshrouded in. To bad that his very death had been the only way to find freedom.

Regulus watched, as attentive as ever as if he was just another Slytherin student awaiting their Professors’ words. His eyes burned with renewed interest once Severus spoke of the Libary, a place he had been dying to explore again. He needed someone to pick the books up for him and turn the pages making his research difficult. It was hard to do so when there were far too many students to hide from. Why by now he had learned more of this place while dead than alive from the many times he found himself in hidden passages. The come and go room was a pleasant, surprise.

A flare of hope burst to life within his chest at the offer. “That would be… wonderful, as long as I may accompany you.“ There was a beat of silence from Severus’ last words then he spoke quietly, "war changes people Severus, I am no longer the silent fearful wallflower of my youth. I was asked to do unthinkable things, things we well shouldn’t speak of here. I believe we can agree with that at least?”

Severus froze at those final words for a moment too long while memories of the war roiled through his brain. Of course. Foolish of him. He was hardly the only one changed by poor choices during that time. And they had barely spoken during the war… if at all. Death Eaters did not ‘socialize,’ and Severus especially had his own reasons for keeping to himself. The Potions Master cleared his throat. “Yes, I suppose we can.”

He allowed a long beat of silence before saying more, returning to the subject of the library. “Madam Pince is quite used to my after-hours book browsing. If you would like to begin immediately, you can meet me in my office after supper. I know of a passage that will get us there without anyone seeing you.” He paused to study the translucent form of the boy he’d once known. “That is, I assume you would rather not be seen, if possible?”

A surprised laugh managed to escape him at Severus’ comment on the children’s incompetence. It seemed he hadn’t changed. He remembered back when they were teens Severus didn’t want to deal with others who didn’t take potion-making seriously. Which left him to wonder why he would want to be a Professor in the first place… A question for another time maybe…

“I’m not sure,” he murmured staring down at his translucent hands. “I’ve felt stagnant, in a way. Time passes strangely for me. In a blink of an eye, I’ve found that hours have passed, even days while I was believed to only be thinking for a few moments at a time. It’s difficult to stay grounded Severus, it’s terrifying in a way knowing so much time has passed while I was away mentally and to be faced with this realization….” Regulus shook his head, rubbing at his temple not meaning to give that much away again but speaking out loud had been one of the ways he had been using to ground himself.

“But no, you do not wish to listen to my inner crisis. Back to things at hand. Even if I have not grown mentally I’m far different from the teenager you had known in life and that is a simple fact.”

The information Regulus was revealing was possibly nothing new to those in the Wizarding World who studied spirits. However, the ghosts at Hogwarts (or elsewhere) had never concerned him enough to read up on. So the information offered was of great interest. Perhaps because of who was offering it… or perhaps not. Black’s younger brother had been a bit of a fascination for Severus even before his disappearance and presumed death. Not that he would willingly admit such a thing out loud.

“I see. Perhaps…” he hesitated only for the briefest of moments, wondering why the offer was even on his lips. Regardless, as his mind tried to pull him back, his mouth kept spewing words, “... I could search the library? There might be a book tucked away somewhere that could tell us how to get you… properly grounded?” The truth was he did wish to hear more about Regulus’ predicament, but perhaps his offer of help would be enough to prove that?

Then there was the matter of the rest of the ghost’s words. “As for being different from the person I knew all those years ago… perhaps you would share with me what you believe has changed?”

Regulus was silent for a moment, having realized that he wasn’t even a few seconds in and already he’s showed a bit of his hand. He probably shouldn’t have told Severus that he had been walking around aware. He should have lied and told him he just came to his senses having been trapped within death memories. No no, then he’d want to know how he died and he wasn’t going to talk about it. It was a traumatizing enough death he didn’t wish to live back through it.

“A forest I believe,” he told the truth the best lies were told that way. “I am unsure where it was located… I wasn’t in the best frame of mindset you see.” He smiled apologetically an expression familiar to him. Apology after apology. Sorry for not being the firstborn, I’m sorry for not being as strong as Sirius, for not being as clever, for always being a disappointment. I’m sorry- sorry sorry sorry!

The offer of companionship forced him out of his wandering thoughts, (They did that more often and he wondered was it due to the fact that’s what ghost were built up of. An imprint of who they use to be filled with memories.)

“Well….” He began tilting his head to the side in curiosity. “I would assume you have better things to do then talk to a lonely old teenage ghost Severus. Though by no means would I find your presence disagreeable. You were, after all, one of the more intelligent boys in our year.”

“Mmm… I’ve heard death can do that to a person,” Severus replied. He’d noted the pause, however, and stored it away for later. Regulus, it seemed, had needed to think about his response. Possibly just a lapse in memory… but also a good indication of a lie. It was too early to judge, but it did make Severus wonder what reason Regulus would have to lie about where he’d been all this time.

Severus was startled by the compliment… but not immune to such flattery - not when his keenness of mind was being noted. He allowed the corners of his mouth to curl slightly, looking like something akin to a pained grimace. “Better things? Like babysitting? 99% of these students are utterly incompetent. I could teach them in my sleep.”

He sighed (and it wasn’t merely for dramatics) before arching a brow curiously. “Can ghosts not learn… or grow mentally? Are you stuck being as you are for the rest of your… afterlife?” Because yes, while he’d interacted with some of the Hogwarts spirits now and again, he’d never given much thought to their existence… or potential lack thereof.

A weak laugh passed Regulus’ lips at Severus words. He was sure if he was alive and breathing he’d feel breathless from it all. It had been oh so long ago that he had to play this game. It was a bit like the game muggles called poker, a game he had no taste for while living but could respect in a way once dead. The way one kept their cards close to their chest, misleading the table by minimal facial expressions alone or the sleight of hand.

He floated closer towards the man. Man. It was a funny word. When looking at Severus he never thought of the other as an adult. He was a peer, someone who was on his level but now here he stood. Older, taller, a Professor that demanded respect. While Regulus, Regulus was still a gangly teen in Slytherin robes. He had only just turned eighteen when he had gone off on his quest, had just graduated even.

He felt hollow as he stared at Severus, took in the mans stress lines, shallow face and long black hair. He couldn’t lie to himself any more time had passed and there was no stopping it. The people he had known in life were changing, living, healing or breaking apart- or even dead.

At the question he smiled blandly, “one feels the need for some sorts of interaction after years of solitude. It felt practical of me to haunt hogwarts then to mope about being dead. Though I find the company I’m surrounded by lacking, not too many die young, you know.”

There was one ghost a Slytherin like he- Duncan Ashe he believed was the name. But all the boy did was brood over this Jacob fellow and Regulus had grown far past petty squabbles in death.

He was being studied… but to what end Severus could hardly know. What did Regulus see when he looked at him? A failure, his mind whispered. A joke. The Potions Master tamped down on his pride. That wasn’t something he could afford to have any more. Not, at least, when it came to his personal reputation. He needed to find some way to use this development to his advantage… to the advantage of Dumbledore’s cause. But that would require discovering Regulus’ loyalties… and perhaps, his spectral abilities, as well.

“It does seem a practical choice,” he acquiesced. “Where were you before you came here?” A valid question, he thought, if Severus was understanding the other’s words and Regulus really had kept himself in solitude for years before coming to Hogwarts. “And perhaps the living would prove more amiable to intelligent conversation?” It was a subtle offer. And one he wasn’t really expecting to be taken up on. After all, if age was a concern, he was hardly a youth himself. Not anymore. Not to mention the ghost had every reason to be wary of him. Still… he had to begin things somewhere…

Regulus had been hiding for a long while, not wanting anyone to know that the Lord Black had a ghost. This was all he had, his ability to try pulling strings in the background whilst in the afterlife. Kreacher still listened to him and followed his orders and the house elf was all he had connecting him to the world of the living.

Being a ghost was not what it all cracked up to be, it was lonely, painful in it’s own way. At least while he was human he could warm himself up with a nice drink or a caring hug from Kreatcher. Now he couldn’t even do that.

It had been years since he had been on Hogwarts grounds having haunted random wooded areas while talking with Kreacher. The castle was just like he remembered it, nothing truly seemed to change. Even the bullying was as prominent in the present as it was in the past along with the house hate. Ignoring the lives of the living, he stuck to the shadows, talking with the other ghost in the castle subtly prodding them for answers. He would never be able to rest easy without destroying the thing that killed him in the end. He also had a bad feeling there were more of them, some he had an idea of just where they would be others he had no clue about.

The ghost he was chatting with quickly sunk into the floor at the sight of a living person being scared off by the presence of them. Regulus growled in annoyance, feeling as if the answer was so close!

“What is it? I can feel you staring at me, it’s rude y-” Regulus cut himself off when he came face to face with the one person, (besides Dumbledore) that he had been avoiding. His pale translucent face went even paler at the sight of the older man if that was possible, body flickering, showing for a split second bite marks that oozed blood before he clamped down on his emotions. It wouldn’t do to show off how he died, unlike the other ghost he didn’t feel the need to do so.

“Severus,” he hesitantly called out sounding surprised. “It has been a while, hasn’t it? I apologize for my rude behavior, I believed it to be another student.” He was nervous, he never could get a read on him back when they were death eaters but he had a hunch that he was against the Dark Lord like him. Well obviously he wasn’t against the Dark Lord at first but that was in the past.

Severus wasn’t heading anywhere in particular. He often roamed the halls simply to give his feet something to do while he worked out a problem… or found himself thinking too much about the past. At the moment, most of the students were down in Hogsmeade, and those that weren’t had little chance of finding this particular section of the castle, so he roamed without much consideration of his surroundings. Which was when he happened across the ghosts.

He’d witnessed many things during the war… most of which Severus would’ve preferred to forget. But this… it was something new. The ghost of someone he knew. Or rather, had known? He thought something flickered across the familiar face… distorting it… but then the motion was gone.

As Regulus spoke, he inclined his head in the way he often did when studying something intently. Was this real? Of course, they’d all assumed Regulus was dead, but… a ghost?! What reason would the other have had for making such a choice? A lone brow arched at the apology as the hint of a smirk quirked at his lips. “I do not enjoy nor require false deference. Treat me however you like. It makes no difference.” Which was at least partially true. A small part of him still cared how others saw him, but he’d buried it under a heavy veil of detached aloofness - he’d had to after the war.

But that wasn’t his real concern. This was Regulus… a fellow Death Eater who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. His presence here (depending on whether or not the rumors were true) could prove either incredibly convenient or terribly problematic. He wondered if Dumbledore knew. Best to tread carefully. “I was not aware you had joined the ghostly entourage here at Hogwarts.”

What We Do in the Present ~ Eldon and Severus

Perhaps if Eldon had remained whole and still had flesh clinging to his bones, he might have been much more reluctant to part with such a book. Memories were attached to the object – old memories of when he was young and just beginning to learn magic. Of his instructor guiding him through the potion book when it was still new and the pages crisp. He almost could remember her face…

But he was not such a person. Sentimental value meant little when compared to the important of his goals. Loaning a childhood potion’s book was just another small step towards cementing himself into the lives of others. It did not matter if it was a priceless historical relic nowadays, nothing else mattered except accomplishing what he ventured out into the public eye for.

The curiosity was there on the Potion Master’s face, but he had enough self control not to flip through the rest of the fragile pages. Impressive. “I’m very fortunate to say that more third year students registered for my class than last year. But it’s still a tiny fraction compared to all of the students you’ll be teaching. I only need a single batch. That should be around twenty vials. I would brew it myself but ah – I’m tragically terrible at potions. There’s no salvation for me, even with the most basic of basics.”

Tapping his chin, Eldon hoped he looked rather thoughtful. “I don’t mind loaning the entire book. As a Potion Master, I trust you’ll be just as cautious with handling it as you do your craft. Anyone with a brain will understand that potion making is the second most dangerous form of magic, the first being Divination of course. Keep it as long as you need – I know it’ll find its way back eventually.” A small upward twist of the lips. Have fun.

Was the mention of a difference in their student numbers flattery… or an attempt at it? Surely not. Potions was, after all, a requirement while Divination was not. And yet, the phrasing had Severus warming ever-so-slightly towards the man. Regardless of his chosen profession (or his odd taste in robes), Professor Liadon had a humble yet knowledgeable air that the younger man was quickly deciding he liked.

“Twenty vials,” he repeated with a nod. “One batch.” A brow arched in amused curiosity. “Not even the most basic of basics, hmm? I imagine that must’ve been incredibly frustrating for both you and your professor when you were in school.” It wasn’t said out of meanness (though Severus wasn’t above such things); it was merely casual observation. He himself already had numerous plans in place should students brew certain potions incorrectly, and he could only imagine the stress of having a student who never seemed to get better at the craft.

When his offer to immediately return the book was turned down (after some seemingly additional thought) Severus resisted breathing a sigh of relief. He was truly looking forward to spending time with the tome. Not only because of its rarity… but also as a way to occupy his scattered mind during the late hours when his memories and regrets threatened to overwhelm him. This return to Hogwarts was proving even more difficult than he’d anticipated.

Liadon’s comment about Divination being the most dangerous form of magic had Severus arching an amused but curious brow. After nodding in affirmation at the other’s comments about the book, he continued, “Should you ever have the time, I find myself curious to hear more about your view of Divination as… dangerous.” He did his very best to keep the typical sneer of disbelief from his voice. The professor had given him no reason to be insulting thus far, and Severus saw no reason to go around alienating the other professors so soon… especially when most of them were already keeping their distance… Dumbledore’s words of trust notwithstanding.

~ Becoming an Animagus ~

Talent in both Transfiguration and Potions is necessary to become an Animagus. No responsibility can be taken for any physical or mental problems resulting from following these instructions.

1. For the space of one entire month (from full moon to full moon), a single leaf from a Mandrake must be carried constantly in the mouth. The leaf must not be swallowed or taken out of the mouth at any point. If the leaf is removed from the mouth, the process must be started again.

2. Remove the leaf at the full moon and place it, steeped in your saliva, in a small crystal phial that receives the pure rays of the moon (if the night is cloudy, you will have to find a new Mandrake leaf and begin the whole process again). To the moon-struck crystal phial, add one of your own hairs, a silver teaspoon of dew collected from a place that neither sunlight nor human feet have touched for a full seven days, and the chrysalis of a Death’s-head Hawk Moth. Put this mixture in a quiet, dark place and do not look at it or otherwise disturb it until the next electrical storm.

3. While waiting for the storm, the following procedure should be followed at sunrise and sundown. The tip of the wand should be placed over the heart and the following incantation spoken: ‘Amato Animo Animato Animagus.’

4. The wait for a storm may take weeks, months or even years. During this time, the crystal phial should remain completely undisturbed and untouched by sunlight. Contamination by sunlight gives rise to the worst mutations. Resist the temptation to look at your potion until lightning occurs. If you continue to repeat your incantation at sunrise and sunset there will come a time when, with the touch of the wand-tip to the chest, a second heartbeat may be sensed, sometimes more powerful than the first, sometimes less so. Nothing should be changed. The incantation should be uttered without fail at the correct times, never omitting a single occasion.

5. Immediately upon the appearance of lightning in the sky, proceed directly to the place where your crystal phial is hidden. If you have followed all the preceding steps correctly, you will discover a mouthful of blood-red potion inside it.

6. It is essential to move, at once, to a large, secure place where your transformation cannot cause alarm or place you in physical danger. Place your wand-tip against your heart, speak the incantation ‘Amato Animo Animato Animagus,’ and then drink the potion.

7. If all has gone correctly, you will feel a fiery pain and an intense double heartbeat. Into your mind will come the shape of the creature into which you are shortly to transform. You must show no fear. It is too late, now, to escape the change you have willed.

8. The first transformation is usually uncomfortable and frightening. Clothing and items such as glasses or jewellery meld to the skin and become one with fur, scales or spikes. Do not resist and do not panic or the animal mind may gain the ascendancy and you could do something foolish, such as try to escape through a window or charge a wall.

9. When your transformation is complete you should find yourself physically comfortable. You are strongly advised to pick up your wand at once, and hide it in a place of safekeeping, where you will be able to find it when you regain a human form.

10. To return to a human form, visualise your human self as clearly as you can. This should be sufficient, but do not panic if the transformation does not occur immediately. With practice, you will be able to slip in and out of your animal form at will, simply by visualising the creature. Advanced Animagi can transform without wands.

What We Do in the Present ~ Eldon and Severus

Delicate layers of purple and yellow fabrics flowed behind Eldon as he moved to grab the chair Professor Snape gestured to. He could never get used to the feel of the silken robes brushing against false skin instead of bone. It didn’t feel quite right. However, feeling uncomfortable with his appearance was a small sacrifice when considering what would happen if he didn’t wear the glamours.

Severus Snape was a difficult man to read. There was no telling what the man was truly thinking, not with that stern attitude and inky black wardrobe. He was young, but carried himself in a way that nearly convinced Eldon he was decades older. Interesting. So unlike Professor Slughorn, who could easily be bribed with exquisite foods and alcohol.

But he was interested, judging from the raised brow and what was said. “Most excellent.” Before taking a seat, Eldon procured a leather book seemingly out of nowhere from his many layers of robes. Sitting down, he placed the book on the desk and slid it in Severus’ direction. The bait was set, and the line had been cast.

It was a richly bound tome, extremely old and held together only by preservation charms. Even in the magical realm, books this old were rare. During the century it was produced, bookbinding was still done entirely by hand and was expensive and difficult to make. Most people used parchment and scrolls to write their magical research on, but the richest wizards had books. This was one such book. An old potions book with entries consisting of early versions of modern potions and some potions that have been lost to time. Only a couple of them could be considered dark by today’s standards.

“I’ve marked the potion I need brewed. Last year I used it for my student’s first practical lesson and it worked better than I expected. So I’m using it again for my newest students. When consumed, it shows your magical aura for a short time. I found it’s easier for the younger students to have a visual aid of how their magic is working in order to better understand and control it. It has plenty of use outside of my own classroom, so feel free to borrow the book and brew some for your own if you wish.”

The book that Professor Liadon produced was of immediate interest to Severus… a fact that he found difficult to hide. Even just a glance was enough to speak of the tome’s age… to hint at the potential secrets held within. He tried to keep his intrigue in check. This could, after all, be construed as a bribe. But to what end? Liadon wanted a potion that he seemed to think Severus could produce. Surely this was more of a payment than a bribe? Nothing was being asked for that was illicit or untoward. He was merely being offered the opportunity to gain knowledge in exchange for a service provided.

Decision made, the Potions Master wrapped his long fingers around the book with care and pulled it closer. He was tempted - so very tempted - to leaf through the contents. But there would be time for his own curiosity later. Instead, he opened the book to its marked page and began to read carefully. Perhaps here was the trick? The test? Some ingredient no longer obtainable (except by nefarious means) or some other requirement that most would view as questionable?

And yet… his eyes looked back up to focus on the Divination professor. “It… is on the complex side,” Severus admitted. “But nothing I’ll have trouble with. And a few of the ingredients are rather obscure… but I’d be surprised if my supply closet didn’t have them stocked.” His fingers drummed absentmindedly on his desk, eyes moving back to the recipe in the book. “How many batches of this do you think you’ll need?” He didn’t comment on the spell itself… although it did sound like a clever method to get reluctant students interested in what Divination had to offer.

In truth he was far more curious about the rest of the book. Fingertips unconsciously caressed the page, and Severus found himself speaking before he could stop himself. “Are you certain you wish to loan the entire book? A copy of the potion you require could easily be made. There is no need for you to part with such a valuable item.” He didn’t want to say the words - wanted to keep the book and make a copy for himself - but he needed to see how the professor would react to the offer… to test him.

Petunia wasn’t going to share her hurt with Severus Snape; one brief resolution of co-conspiring couldn’t overcome years of animosity between them. Not on a topic that she wouldn’t even share with Lily. He didn’t get to see her scars, or hear about the tears she’d muffled in her pillow. Working with Snape was a matter of convenience that didn’t impart any sort of intimacy.

She wanted to shake him again. So he had known something. “You’ll probably be fine,” she dismissed. “You’ve got one magical parent, at least.” As far as she could tell, that landed him in the ‘safe’ zone of that murky grey area called ‘Halfblood’. “But there’s a lot of people who, who don’t like people with Muggle parents.” Not a majority, by far; not of the sort who would openly sneer and degrade and humiliate. The majority limited themselves to a sort of patronizing skepticism of ability, managing to think that strange breed lesser without putting any intentional vitriol into the view.

“I don’t think I ever got any of the worst of it,” she confessed slowly. The most overtly vicious proponents of the awfulness seemed to come from her own house, which she was largely shielded from by virtue of being one of them. “But it’s bad. They sent one boy to the Infirmary for three days.”

Would he be fine? Silently, Severus had wondered... still wondered. He was also wary of trusting Petunia’s words. After all, what reason did she have to offer him any sort of comfort? The boy sniffed. “Mum says it’s all stupid anyway. She says magic is magic - doesn’t matter where it comes from.” And he believed her. He HAD to. Because otherwise... his thoughts settled on his father, gaze distant.

Severus came back to the present when the older girl spoke again, wondering why she didn’t think things had been as bad for her. Should he ask? Was it because she was powerful?! Were they scared of her? Surely not! Petunia hadn’t even shown any signs! Severus suddenly found himself torn between treating her like he always had... and offering her some respect. The idea grated at him, but the longer they talked to more it seemed like he was going to have to alter his opinions of her.

His mouth fell open as Petunia talked about the boy who'd been sent to the infirmary. Fists clenched as he imagined Lily being hurt instead, he ground out, “I’m not going to let that happen to her!” And then, because he realized that Petunia offered him an advantage, he amended his words, “We won’t let that happen.” This didn’t change things between them - not completely - but for Lily’s sake Severus was willing to do whatever it took.

“I need to know what sorts of things are happening. Then I can look through mum’s books, and find ways to be prepared for them. We... we should set up times to meet...” They probably couldn't do much during the holidays, but summer would allow them enough time... he hoped. The young boy hesitated, and then asked softly, “Are... are you going to tell Lily the truth...?” It would serve him right if she did. But he hadn’t lied to hurt his friend... only to protect her!

What We Do in the Present ~ Eldon and Severus

Eldon had grossly miscalculated how difficult adjusting to life inside Hogwarts would be. His first year of teaching had been trial and error. Lots of trial and error. Mistakes were made, but he learned and adapted to overcome his shortcomings. This year should prove to be much easier – wiser in the ways of wizarding society and mortal mannerisms.

Professor Liadon had caused quite a stir when his employment was announced. Seemingly out of thin air, he had appeared for an interview with Headmaster Dumbledore for the vacant Divination teaching position. A Muggleborn who demonstrated a keen intellect and deep understanding of Divination despite his lack of educational background. There were no records of an Eldon Liadon in existence in the Ministry of Magic, nor any information available to back his claims of Muggle heritage. And despite it all, Albus Dumbledore had hired him shortly after the interview.

Completely scandalous.

Much of the staff and student body were nervous around him at first, despite his efforts to appear harmless. He had glamoured himself to appear as a middle aged man with long greying blonde hair with a well groomed beard. He had chosen green eyes for his disguise, believing lighter colored eyes would allow him to appear more approachable.

Unfortunately, he could do nothing about his imposing height. The glamours he applied could only do so much before they strained his magic. Creating a dramatic change of height was just too much to constantly maintain. So he found himself dressing in obnoxiously bright colors to make himself appear comical to his students. It worked. Over time as he found his rhythm, the staff and students became used to his strange habits and mannerisms.

He had finished his lesson plans over the summer, but some of his first classes required a potion. A potion of his invention he had no way of brewing this day and age. When he was human, brewing it had been simple. But nowadays, it was impossible. The only way to tell if the potion was complete was by the smell. Eldon had no sense of smell. A lich with no nose to smell with.

Which drew him to the dungeons, his footsteps echoing off the stone walls. Professor Slughorn had retired, ushering in the employment of one Severus Snape. He had never spoken with the man, but perhaps he’d be open in helping him brew the potion.

Stepping into the open doorway of the Potions classroom, he found the man in question sitting at his desk working on some paperwork. A man that looked much too young to be teaching in Hogwarts. “Ah, hello Severus. I never got a chance to speak with you when Albus introduced you to the staff. I’ll just cut straight to why I’m here. I was wondering if you’d be able to help me with making a few potions for my class.”

Severus eyed the man who appeared in the doorway, memory quickly placing him from introductions earlier that week. Even if he hadn’t had a good memory for such things, the new Potions Master didn’t think it would’ve been easy to forget Professor Eldon Liadon - not when the other sported such a loud wardrobe and had such an imposing height.

His lips pursed almost imperceptibly as he recalled what the professor taught - Divination. That particular branch of magic left a bad taste in his mouth... although not exactly for the normal reasons. Oh, yes, he’d once sneered down on those who pretended to divine the future... it was, after all, a mostly puerile and pointless branch of magic. But now... it was divination which had destroyed one of the few people who mattered to him... divination which had led him on a road to ruin.

None of this passed across his face in any noticeable way, of course, as the professor walked towards him, talking. Severus knew how to mask what he didn’t wish to be seen, and there was no reason to make an enemy of this man. Not yet. A single brow arched in interest at the request being made... and despite himself, Severus was curious.

He nodded in greeting, and then gestured to a chair sitting along one wall, indicating the other should bring it closer and have a seat. “I make no promises. However, I’m amenable to discussing what you need. Once I’ve heard more, I can doubtless make a more informed decision.” Moving his paperwork slightly aside as a silent show of listening, Severus waited, truthfully curious about Professor Liadon’s request.
