I like to imagine Sirius found out that Regulus was an animagus AND dating James at the same time

*Sirius sitting in their dorm: looks at the marauders map and notices James and Regulus right on top of each other in the common room*

*also Sirius: RUNS to the common room to see James softly petting a black cat on his lap*

the gears started turning in his head at this exact moment.

I saw someone saying that one of their headcannons was that Sirius's animagus was actually a puppy, a tiny black puppy, all throughout Hogwarts.

But it wasn't until he had to suffer through Azkaban that it became the Grim.

It's post-jegulus dark mark break up, and Regulus starts transforming into his cat animagus almost nightly to escape the nightmare that is both his dreams and life.

One day he falls asleep in his wander around the halls and wakes up to find himself curled up next to a fire in James's lap. His immediate instinct is to leave. He doesn't deserve the affection. But the warmth warmed his bones in a way he hadn't been able to be since they broke up, and the cat mind had always been more selfish in it's deeds....

So he stays and just soaks in the warmth and affection he knows he doesn't deserve and will never have again, savouring every single moment.

Unkownst to Regulus, James knew it was him.

Sirius, Remus, peter, and James's teammates gather around and bet if James is dating someone or got a cat in summer holiday.

They ask James if a human or a cat caused that scars. With vesiterium.

The answer was yes.
