In the sequel to our fanfiction "A Second Chance", we continue the love story of Roxanne Brooks and James "Bucky" Barnes. Although the pair tried to run away from the pain of their past, they'll soon be reminded that it always catches up to you. It seems as though the closer the two grow, the more everything around them threatens to tear them apart. What sacrifices will it take to finally shed all fear and doubt, and join two lives in a new beginning? What obstacles and catastrophes will a love born in the most unusual of circumstances be able to survive?

I hope you're all doing well! I know, I haven't updated this page in a LONG time. Without meaning to, I kinda ended up going into an unexpected and unannounced hiatus :'D

(This is a fairly long read, so if you're not interested in knowing the reasons behind my absence, you can scroll down to the "So, when is ALB coming back?" section)
The main reason for my prolongued absence was because the hand and wrist pains that I had been feeling for a few months began to get worse and worse, and became unbearable enough that I had to see a doctor about them.
It turns out I had tendinitis, which, thankfully, wasn't in an awfully serious state, according to my traumatologist. However, and naturally, I did need to rest, and I was also prescribed medication, to wear a wrist+thumb brace for some days, and given some hand exercises I had to do a few times a day for at least two to three weeks. I was also recommended to get a handrest and ergonomic mouse for my computer, which I did.
Since my prolongued use of my computer, cellphone, and tablet contributed greatly to the pain, I decided to take a semi-break from most social media during that time. I know I could've announced this sooner, but I got into a weird mentality that I couldn't say anything to you guys until I had something to show (i.e. a sketch or WIP), otherwise, I felt too embarassed considering how long it had already been since my last post.
It's also worth noting that the pain was taking longer to get better than I would've wished, making me worried that there was something more serious going on. Combined with some personal issues, it all led to my mental and emotional state, as well as motivation, to all be pretty low. I won't lie to you guys, there was a point when I feared that I either would never be able to draw again, or that I would have to quit making illustrations for the fanfic. My mind does tend to go to pessimistic places like that when faced with hardships.
But thank God, while it took longer than expected, the pain did eventually start to diminish more and more, and eventually disappeared. Currently, I still get some mild aches if I'm on my computer or cellphone too long, but now I'm a lot more aware of this and try to do the appropiate rest and stretches when needed, so I think I can now say I'm taking better care of my joints. (Here's your friendly reminder to do the same, guys! 😉😅)
And now what was left to do was... go back to drawing. Which I hadn't done in over a month. And even before the whole wrist crisis happened, I was still battling through a pretty long and difficult artblock. So needless to say, I was (and to some degree, still am) super duper rusty. 😬
Something that really helped me losen up was a fun practice that I hadn't done in a really long time: Just filling out full pages of random doodles/sketches. Not planning anything, just drawing whatever came to mind, and without worrying about it looking perfect. These are two of the ones I did. The first one are just a bunch of Roxanne and Bucky doodles, including some scenes from "A Lasting Bond" Chapter 1. The second one was made with a blue crayon I randomly found in a drawer, haha.
These were done relatively quickly, and most of the anatomy is VERY bad, and I'm not used to sharing art at such a rough stage. And a part of me still feels a bit bad about not having anything more polished to show you all alongside this announcement. But here's my attempt to step out of that perfectionist mentality and not be afraid to show these imperfections as much. 😅
It's also worth noting two things that have greatly helped me find a bit of motivation and inspiration again: One were the entries done by many on this year's Flashlight Week, which I've already talked in more detail on my first proper post since the crisis began on my main account; and the other is, of all things, Steven Universe! A few weeks ago, I started rewatching the franchise, and I had forgotten how GOOD the show was?? I feel like I am now able to understand and appreciate it significantly better than I did back when I first watched it in late high school/early college (which is saying something considering I already loved it back then haha). This rewatch has inspired me so much that I've also been privately making some fan creations related to it, some of which you guys may or may not get glimpses of soon, mainly on my main account, but also over here. That's all I'll say for now. 🙊😉
So, when is ALB coming back?

I can't give you guys an exact date yet, but I can tell you that I'm starting to work on the long overdue illustrations of that first chapter. You can see the first little attempts in that doodle sheet above, haha. 😅 (Though these aren't necessarily the scenes I'll end up illustrating, just the first that came to mind when doodling)
I'll also let you guys know that Chapter 2 is already written. I'm also going to retake writing (hopefully with Julienne's help whenever she's able) in the upcoming weeks. My idea is for Chapters 2 and 3 to be posted alongside their respective illustrations, and not too far apart from one another, considering those two are kind of one big chapter split into one. So, if all goes well, you should expect those two sometime in mid-to-late August, and new illustrations (both fic and non-fic related) and WIPs this month! 😊
If you guys have been here for a while, you'll know that this isn't the first and may not be the last time an unexpected pause in posting and fanfic updates have happened. But I still wanted to let you guys know what's been going on with me, and let you guys know that I'm doing much better and I'm feeling ready to make a return! 😉
Y'all know what I'll always say: this is a project that I plan to finish and see through, no matter how long it ends takes me or how many obstacles I face, and regardless of how many or few people are along for the ride. And if you're one of the people who are still here: INFINITE THANK YOUS and abundant virtual hugs for being a real one and for taking interest in my work. I love and appreciate you truly. 🫶💖
I think that's pretty much all I have to say for now. Extra thank you if you've read the whole thing, and if you didn't, thank you anyway for the interest in ALB. You'll see more soon.
Sadly I was not able to make a new celebratory artwork this year, but we love Bucky over here as you know, and our goal will always be to give him the happiness he deserves. 💖
(Psssst, while we're at it, we'll finally have an update on the new fanfic later this week! Not yet the full chapter, but I'll probably give you guys a little preview 😉)
I didn't get to illustrate this scene from ASC Chapter 22 back in December for a number of reasons, but here it is now as a late Valentine's Day treat. 💖 Extra romanticized for holiday purposes, LOL.

*Title meaning comes from the Spanish idiom "Entrar en la boca del lobo" ("Enter the wolf's mouth"), which means putting oneself in a dangerous situation.
The sun was just about to kiss the horizon when Roxanne and Bucky finally made their way back to civilization.
Bucky looked up at the sky and stated, “I think this is about as far as we can go for today. We’re going to need to find somewhere to stay.”
“We’re probably going to need to find a place to squat for the night,” Ro replied. “We’re going to need to save whatever money we’ve got for wherever we end up going next.”
The two of them had just passed a road sign when Roxanne suddenly stopped walking and turned back to look at the sign. On it was a single word, “Gualán.”
“Is something wrong?” Bucky called when he noticed that Ro had stopped following him.
“That depends,” Ro answered, catching up with him. “I think I might have a solution to our lodging problem, but I don’t love it. So, it just so happens that we’ve arrived at my pa’s hometown, and my abuelita still lives here.”
“Abuelita?” Bucky repeated in confusion.
“It means grandma. Anyway, I know where she lives, and I also know she’ll definitely let us stay with her if we ask.” She sighed, putting a hand on her face. “However, if we do that, we risk leading HYDRA to her, and I’d put another family member in danger, which was exactly why I left New York in the first place.”
“What are our other options?”
“I think motels are out of the question until we can gather more money,” Ro began, grimacing slightly as she thought. “So we’d probably have to either sleep on the street, which is of course not ideal, but it wouldn’t be my first time and probably won’t be the last, by the looks of it. Or we look around for some abandoned place where we can spend the night. But that might take a while, and it won’t be long until it’s dark.”
“And how far would you say your grandmother’s house is from here?”
“Probably less than an hour on foot.”
The conflict in Ro’s expression did not go unnoticed by Bucky. “Look, after what I did to your ex and his team, I seriously doubt they’re gonna try anything tonight,” he told her, attempting to sound as reassuring as he could. “We’re only gonna drop by your grandmother’s, plan our next steps, get some rest, and leave by the morning. We’ll be gone before HYDRA even knows we were there.”
“I hear what you’re saying,” Ro acknowledged, “but it still wouldn’t feel right to risk her like that.”
“We can take turns standing guard, if that’ll make you feel better.”
Ro placed a hand over her mouth, furrowing her brow as she thought hard and weighed her options. “Well, maybe…” she began after a while, but then shook her head. “No! No, we can’t possibly do that. We have to think of something else. We have to think!”

“Hola, Abuelita,” Ro sheepishly greeted the elderly woman on the other side of the doorway.

A question left in an IG comment by my friend @minamorsart gave me the idea to answer in a small post, since it has enough material to warrant one:
What were some IRL inspirations for the backgrounds in the Chapter 20 illustrations? 🏙️🇬🇹
As I mentioned, the events of Chapter 20 take place in my country, Guatemala. And while neither the illustrations nor the chapter itself delve too extensively in exploring the country or its landmarks (I would've loved for it to, but it would've detracted from the story we're telling), Annalee's question was an excellent opportunity for an extra feature showing you guys some of the inspiration for our settings and background details. 😁
Firstly, while it didn't make it into the illustrations, it's worth noting that the first scene of the chapter takes place in the department of Totonicapán. It's about 126 miles away from the capital and is a fairly popular tourist destination, although more so for local tourists than international ones. It has some of the most incredible and beautiful sights and landmarks to offer in this country. 😁
2. The entire bus chase scene was Julienne's idea. The bus Roxanne and Bucky were traveling in was a Bus Extraurbano, often referred to by tourists as "Chicken Buses", that was on its was to El Salvador.
These buses actually once were school buses in the United States, and after reaching a certain age, they're imported to Guatemala and given a new life as these colorful modes of transportations! Because of their antiquity, they're not exactly known to be very smooth or comfortable means to get around. 😅 But they're convenient and fairly accessible , and you can find buses going to all places in and out of the country. As we depicted in the chapters, these buses are almost constantly packed (one of the reasons why they give me a fair deal of anxiety to ride IRL 😅), and you can often find farmers traveling with produce and/or livestock (mostly chickens) to and from the market, which is where the nickname Chicken Bus comes from (you'll very rarely here us locals use that name though haha).
As for the street the chase scene occurrs in, there wasn't a solid inspiration for it, but in my head, it would mostly take place in one of our interior* highways, since I think that's the only way they would've managed to not find enough traffic to just remain stuck the whole time. 😅🤣 (Traffic jams do be a nightmare here y'all LOL)
*Just in case, any time I use the word "interior" in this context, it basically means anywhere in the country that isn't the capital :)
3. Last but not least, this scene! I've gotten some compliments for how this background turned out (thank you, btw ^^), and there were a few inspirations.
The main inspiration, which I also think is the most obvious, is Antigua Guatemala. While the scene doesn't take place in Antigua, I think the colonial architecture style in that city, the colors, and atmosphere really capture the look and feel of the interior that I was going for. Like I said, it's not a direct replica of any IRL street, but I wanted it to really feel like Guate. 😊
In my head, Roxanne and Bucky are going through the backstreet of a fairly small vecindad in this illustration, hence why the path they're walking isn't paved. Stone walls are also something commonly found in those areas.
Those were my main inspirations when creating these chapter's illustrations! I'm not claiming to have done a perfect job nor do I claim to know everything there is just because I'm from this country. I certainly too have a lot to learn and see! While I have no concrete or immediate plans yet, one day in the future, I do hope I'm able to tell a story taking place in my country that will showcase its beauty and culture more properly, for which I plan to do a more thorough research and, hopefully, travel a bit to more sites of my country to do it justice! 😤💪
In the meantime, this was my humble attempt to include Guatemala in a superhero fanfic written by two overly imaginative fangirls, haha.
