Survivors of a deadly typhoon in the Philippines have filed a claim against the UK's largest oil company.

Victims of a deadly typhoon in the Philippines have filed a legal claim against oil and gas company Shell in the UK courts, seeking compensation for what they say is the company's role in making the storm more severe. Around 400 people were killed and millions of homes hit when Typhoon Rai slammed into parts of the Philippines just before Christmas in 2021. Now a group of survivors are for the first time taking legal action against the UK's largest oil company, arguing that it had a role in making the typhoon more likely and more damaging. Shell says the claim is "baseless", as is a suggestion the company had unique knowledge that carbon emissions drove climate change.

The Division of Ecological Restoration has an ambitious pledge in the works when it comes to the state’s many cranberry bogs.

Massachusetts is home to 13,000 acres of cranberry bogs, making it the second-largest cranberry-producing region in the U.S. and the third-largest in the world. The bright, red berries are the state’s moneymaker, contributing over $1.7 billion to the state's economy annually. But a good chunk of that acreage is taken up by defunct cranberry bogs that have been rotated out of cultivation. Fortunately, a new program by the state’s Division of Ecological Restoration is on a mission to convert them back into natural wetlands. In November 2024, the DER funneled $6 million in grants to the restoration plan. According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, more than 500 acres of retired cranberry bogs have already been converted into wetlands — with hopes of restoring 1,000 acres in the next decade. “These projects will transform degraded former cranberry bogs into thriving wetlands that will provide habitat to important species, flood control in time of storms, and access for all to beautiful natural areas,” Governor Maura Healey said in a statement.

The US and other governments derailed an agreement on a global environment study, its co-chair says.

"Compiled by nearly 300 scientists worldwide, the report argues that the food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the energy we consume all involve the extraction of resources in a highly unsustainable manner.

To solve the connected issues of climate change, pollution, nature and biodiversity loss, the report has many recommendations including a rapid move away from coal, oil and gas and a massive reduction in subsidies for farming and fossil fuels.

These strong measures, especially on fossil fuels and plastics, were too much for the United States, Saudi Arabia and Russia among others at the approval meeting, which usually work by consensus.

"I thought we had gone beyond the point of recognizing that when you burn oil, this big, thick black stuff comes up, and it probably isn't good, especially when you try and breathe it in," said Dr David Broadstock, with the Lantau Group, and one of the report's lead authors.

"It's kind of pretty obvious, and yet we're still seeing parties wanting to pursue the increasing scale of production of such things,""

This foliose cyanolichen is native to a narrow band of the central California coast, where it grows on shaded, mossy trail edges. It has circular lobes with both marginal (on the edges) and laminal (on the lobe surface) isidia. It is blue-gray to gray-brown in color, appearing lighter when dry and darker when wet. S. singulare was described in 2016, which I was gonna say is recent (it is in the world of taxonomy) but OMG that was almost ten years ago where has the time gone???

Free Bus Program in Iowa City Has Reduced Traffic and Pollution

Some of the improvements Iowa City has seen since implementing this program include:

•Buses are on time 13% more often (no rummaging for bus fares/money as passengers board)

•Less crowded streets

•An 18% increase in bus ridership over pre-pandemic levels (most locations are seeing only 85% the bus use as pre pandemic)

•24,000 metric ton decrease in CO2 emissions (equivalent of 5,200 cars)

•Drivers and passengers report less friction on buses and a more pleasant riding experience

All this was paid for by a 1% increase in utility taxes and increasing downtown parking costs from $1 to $2. So far the program has been a resounding success and is being renewed for an additional year.

However, as temperatures rise, they tend to operate frequently in stress mode. This is the conclusion of an international study led by the University of Duisburg-Essen, which analyzed DNA and mRNA from 20 North American rivers. The results, recently published in the journal Microbiome, confirm patterns that have also been observed for European rivers. Many people associate the term "microbiome" with the human body. However, rivers and streams, too, host complex microbial communities that are essential for stable ecosystems. "In the sediment, where groundwater and river water intermix, countless microbes ensure that nitrogen and sulfur cycles function properly," explains Alexander Probst, Professor for Environmental Metagenomics at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and Research Professor at the Research Center One Health Ruhr of the University Alliance Ruhr.
