            SHE RAISED HER BROW to the company in front of her. “i was up way to late last night, so excuse my attention span. what were you saying?” she spoke up quickly once she had finished a big gulp of much needed coffee, with a little hang over help. a hang over today could be a hangover that turns into tomorrow’s problem.

Aldric laughed as she admitted she was up too late. “Believe me, I know how that goes. Took me forever to get my sleep schedule right when I first got here.’ He nodded to the paper cup in her hands. “I was just asking where you got the coffee from? I could use some myself.”

in all honesty, rose had no idea how to reply. she had so many answers as to why nobody would want to bring her home to their parents. all she was – at least to herself – was a pretty face with a decent artistic hand. “tell you what, al,” she said softly, voice still hopeful if not quieter now. gentler. as if she’d never expressed such a sweet, tempting hope. “if you can find him for me, you’d be a miracle worker.” rosemary’s eyes flickered to his lips for just a second before she looked back to his eyes. even now, her unrelated question, was still thick with the same anticipation. “so. when should i paint you, dear poseidon?”

He was about to pipe up. About to say something along the lines of her not having to look far, but her question caught him a bit off guard. Aldric knew that they’d discussed it a bit, but he didn’t know that she was serious. Blood rushed to his cheeks as they flushed slightly. “Oh- I, uh.. You meant that?” He scratched at the back of his head, an incredulous smile on his features. “I’m honored, really, that you think I’d be able to pull it off.” His hand returned to his lap and clasped with his other. “Well, I guess it’s more a question of when works for you?”

“Yeah. I guess it is pretty awesome.” She nodded. It was amazing, but it could be dangerous. She or her mother or her siblings could warp reality to suit what they wanted. Massive changes. People didn’t tend to be comfortable with that. “Uh, yeah. Um…” Miri concentrated for a moment, taking a deep breath before she began to levitate off the ground. She only rose about a foot, but it was enough to demonstrate her abilities.

He watched in intently as the girl levitated. Even if it was brief, his eyes were trained on her in amazement. While he’d never disliked his abilities or took them for granted, flight was always something he’d dreamed of. Even if it was just a fleeting thing, her ability granted the chance for it and he was colored impressed. Aldric gave a small clap. “Hey, that’s quite magnificent. I’ve always wanted to be able to fly, but I suppose I’ll settle for swimming well.”

loki missed the reference, but the young man’s enthusiasm was greatly infectious. face softened with his particular brand of paternal fondness, the old god nodded. “once, during a sparring match – i was a small boy, and he was always a bloody great brute – he lunged for me. we spent hours fighting.” he reminisced, smirking a little at his own memory. he really was a loathsome little boy. no wonder only his mother had adored him. “well, he did. i sat at the sidelines. he’d been fighting my clones.” the look on his face had been priceless.

“Oh my God.” Aldric was nearly guffawing by this point, the image of Thor swinging until he couldn’t anymore, onlly to realize his actual target was sitting back laughing at him. “That’s amazing, but..” He trailed off, actually growing a bit curious. Without saying a word, he brought up a finger... And poked the teacher’s cheek. “Are.. Are you even actually here now?”

Giving him a bright smile, Keira nodded at his words. She liked her brother, and she considered him as more than only a half-brother, even if her mother didn’t like it. “I’d love to have matching necklaces. That would totally make sense to me, I mean you’re my friend as much as my brother.” She shrugged. She never had a lot of friends, for the simple reason that she was never really here. She was just coming back from Htrae, where she was for holidays, and she had spent her entire childhood there, she wasn’t much into friendship so. “Really different. As always.” She shrugged. “It’s been since my mother took me away from Earth that we didn’t really talk to each other each other, right? Seventeen years. We hadn’t much to tell each other when I was five.” She laughed softly. “I missed you. I miss dad.”

Aldric beamed when Keira agreed to his proposal. “Oh, really? Hell yeah!” He nodded in excitement, gripping the pearl shard before pocketing it, listening to his sister speak. “Yeah, that sounds about right. It’s been way too long.” He reached out and touched her arm comfortingly, “Well it’s good to have you here. Twenty five year old Aldric is a tad more interesting than eight year old Aldric.” He grinned. “Father misses you too, Keira. He speaks about you often, actually.” It was true, that was one of the reasons he was so excited to go to Paragon, he’d actually have a chance to try and reconnect with his sister which was something he’d longed for most of his childhood. “I’ll have to take you down to Atlantis to see him sometime... You can still swim, right?” He asked, teasing her.

atlantis? the australian frowned deeper, not understanding. jasper hadn’t heard of the place; he’d not grown up on many fairy tales and mythologies, and what he did know was australian and warlpiri culture. he caught the disney reference, although he’d never seen the film, he was pretty confident he understood it. “you… you like, a-a merman or somethin’?” jasper wasn’t typically eloquent anyway, but in this state, he didn’t really know how to make his mouth work well. “how’s your legs?”

Aldric looked off into the night sky, wrestling with the question for a moment. “I mean, yes and no?” He bit his lip trying to articulate his thoughts before continuing. “Like, I can swim really fast and breathe underwater and all that good stuff,” he kicked his legs that were dangling off the side of the building. “But I have legs full time. I’m a little clumsy on them, but, like, they never turn into a tail or anything... I don’t think I have gills either, but to be honest I may and not know it.” He mused, more to himself than Jasper.

Trying to smuggle in a puppy you found off the street in the middle of a rainstorm was more a Damian thing, but Laura had found this one and it’s floppy ears and head tilt won her over at least enough to house it for the night until she got to the vet clinic tomorrow. She blames her Uncle for her tender heart for animals, even though she may or may not have gone out of her way for a stray dog or two when she was back in Gotham’s Crime Alley. As the dog got warmer, he got friendlier, which made him more active.

The Teachers Assistant Dorms were closer than her dorms, hoping to find Yari so he could either mock her or help her out ( most likely both but she never liked to assume with her Uncles) Laura stumbled into the common room with a yapping happy puppy she was trying to hide in her sopping wet from the rain sweatshirt. “Shit-” She said, blinking at the really unfairly hot man next to the fish tank. Seriously why are all the people here hot as hell?

Before she could even say anything smooth to the hot buff man, the dog started wiggling out of her jacket. “Can you help me get something for him to dry off with?”

He turned to fully face the girl who’d entered. She didn’t look old enough to be a TA, but who knew around here? Some of the surface dwellers looked old for their age, some young. He’d learned to stop trying to guess at this point. Apparently the prince had caught her off guard. He was just guessing, but from the wide eyes and the expletive, she seemed to be just as surprised as he was. Just as he was about to ask what he could do for her, he heard a small yip from her jacket. A brow raised in confusion until he saw the small furry head wriggle its way out of her jacket. The Atlantean smiled widely at the.. oh, shoot, what were their names again? Gods? No, no that wasn’t right. Dogs, that’s it.

A smile rested on his face as he got a bit closer to the girl and her little furry companion. “No need, I got this,” he told her as he focused on the dog. He raised his hands and really concentrated for a moment. A few seconds passed and water droplets raised from the dog’s fur, culminating in a small orb above one of his outstretched hands. It took a minute, but he finally got all of the water out of the small dog’s fur. He floated the orb over a nearby sink and let it all spill down the drain. Scratching the dog behind the ear, he nodded.

“Good as new.” His eyes directed back up to the young woman who’d brought the dog in. “Now, you know it’s against school rules to bring animals in the dorms.” He turned his head both ways to make sure they were alone. “But c’mon. There’s no way I can say ‘no’ to this face. He’s like a little land seal, that’s awesome.” He continued to pet the land seal- er dog on the head. He can stay for tonight to keep him out of the rain, but we’re gonna have to find somewhere for him soon. No matter how much I wish he could stay.” He said with a chuckle.

What a funny guy. Jack just shrugged. He could show off a bit, and he was probably willing to. But the odds of getting in trouble were just too high to risk.

“Maybe some day in the danger room” He was cocky as always, however, his smile faded as the other male rumbled about having an aquarium. He didn’t really expect an answer to his question, specially such an elaborated one. Maybe was just him, but he thought about it and it all seemed boring as hell. “Weren’t you supposed to like the fish free or something like that?”

“I look forward to it! Name the time and place and I’ll be there!” He said, genuine excitement and curiosity in his voice. Seeing what others could do was one of  his favorite things about being at Paragon. At the other’s inquiry about the fish, he tilted his head and shrugged a little. “I mean, I guess. If these little guys were higher up on the food chain, I may advocate it, but.. Fish this small may be better off- and live longer- inside a tank. As sad as it may sound, I think this is the best place for ‘em.”

she tried not to notice how much his kindness and optimism stung. rosemary had not known such softness, and something in aldric’s tone of voice was almost hopeful. slowly sitting up from her position on his shoulder, she stared at him with wide eyes. he might as well have spoken another language. “i’m not sure there’s somebody patient enough.” rosemary admitted, clearly resigned to a life of, at best, being somebody’s side-piece. “they don’t want to date me, al. they want to–” something felt wrong about finishing that sentence. they only want to fuck me. “i’m not sure anyone would want me to meet their parents, you know?”

He turned to face her when he felt her chin leave his shoulder. The wide eyed stare from Rosemary elicited a hopeful, assuring smile from the prince. “Maybe you just haven’t found them yet. I’m sure they’re out there looking for you. Maybe even right now.” He chuckled, looking out the window to the darkness of the night. His brow raised and he shot her a quizzical look. “How could someone not want to show you off to the whole world? Especially their parents.”

whilst the fish analogy was a little on the nose for an atlantean, it was possibly the most endearing thing rosemary had heard in her nineteen years on this planet. she had been too young, those her hades had been indebted to had been too eager; the hurt was the core part of who she was now. it had forcibly removed her from her own house. watching the water move above them – a work of art in its own right – she found herself less cynical for a change. or, perhaps just as much, but enjoying the conversation more. though the thought of him thinking of her as a good woman made her sigh. “i’m a solid four on a good day. but thanks, al.” 

His focus switched again from the fish tank to the artist, he shot her a look of skepticism. “You’re a four if the scale is out of three maybe.” He smiled to her. “You wouldn’t have a line of suitors around the pond if you were anything less, Rose, you know it.” He took a pause before speaking again, “For what it’s worth, though, and I mean this with the utmost respect, you deserve one person who will treat you right. Good enough that you wouldn’t need anyone else.”

         quite FRANKLY jason had been on rather thin ice with the other teachers as of late, mostly due to his recklessness and sometimes less than ethical teaching ideals. he certainly wasn’t qualified to be teaching these kids but he knew it made bruce happy and even rather PROUD to see jason finally reforming; for the most part.  ❝ in my defense, ❞ the male started, his own hues darting slightly from the row of angered eyes set on him as a kid laid unconscious on the floor.  ❝ i told the kid not to sneak up on me. pays to listen, and all that. ❞

Aldric was.for lack of better terms, fish eyed when he looked from the so-called teacher and the unconscious student in the hallway. Hands raised to either side of his head in disbelief of what he’d just seen. ‘No way! Are you serious, man?!  You’re a teacher you can’t just goo around knocking out your students! It’s just bad form, dude.” He said, before checking the student’s breathing and heart rate.

she was glad he disregarded the first question. rose didn’t know what would be worse; telling him, letting him in, and being the first person she actually said anything to, or refusing to tell him and making him wonder and worry. “not directly. i still feel him.” not, of course, in her tender girlish heart, but inside her. though she did not say so, the telepath was sure her meaning was implied. aldric’s gentle affection made her heart swell, just a little, and rosemary hummed softly. “you’re a good man, aldric. i want you to know that.”

He frowned upon hearing that whatever this man had done still resounded within her. He hated that she had to feel the pain even after the fact. A small smile crossed his lips as he shook his head. “I am but a small fish in life’s great ocean. I just hate that anyone has to hurt like that and I wish there was something I could do to stop the hurt. Take it all away,” He said as he willed the water from the fish tank to float above his hands to illustrate his point before putting it back. “You’re a good woman, Rose. You deserve to be happy and not worry about anyone hurting you.”

“That’s… actually pretty cool. So I guess I can give up on showing off to you, then.” He said simply with a scoff. He kept forgetting that people in the Academy were not the same. That he did not need to prove himself. He took his hand out of his nose, but kept the disgusted face. Even though, this could be rude, considering that now he knew a little about the other man’s background. “Ugh. That’s  d i s g u s t i n g. Why do people even have aquariums?”

“Well if you’d like to, by all means, please show off your skills.” He grinned, completely missing the sarcasm, or ignoring it. The other’s face and gesture honestly kind of pissed the Atlantean off, but he did his best to smile through it and play it cool. Be chill and all. He peered into the aquarium again as he spoke. “Perhaps some people like watching the fish. They find them to be calming. Others like feeling like they have dominion over something, even as small as a fish tank. For others, it’s a fun hobby. There are plenty of reasons to get an aquarium though, I’d advise it to anyone!” He gushed with a bright smile that, by this point, wasn’t even fake.

initially, rosemary had assumed his silence was an indicator of him not liking the piece. really, she couldn’t stand any work with her likeness attached. it suddenly felt so impersonal that it made her squirm. his unexpected hurt threw her for a moment, staring up at him, before clearing her throat. slowly, she flicked through to the last picture currently drawn in the folio – a leering, suave, haunting hades, with all skin covered except for his hands and face – she sat back. “it’s his fault.” she answered quietly, slowly leaning her chin against aldric’s shoulder to stare at the picture over him. “it was the easiest comparison to make, i guess.”

Hazel eyes scanned over the next drawing just as intently as the ones before. Aldric felt her head next to his and more out of instinct than anything else, he leaned his own head against hers. “What did he do to you?” He asked, before shaking his head. “No, y’know what, it doesn’t matter what was done... He’s not still causing you pain, is he?”

“Interesting to say the least, yeah.” She pauses, thinking for a moment. “It’s about changing reality. Using the fabric of reality and bending it to what you want. I think. It’s kind of witchcraft.”

“Bending it to what you want,” he mused to himself quietly, mulling it over. “That sounds fucking awesome!” He gave a hearty laugh as his mind went wild with thoughts of what he’d do if he had that for a day.. “Sounds like the best kind of magic." He paused for a moment, thinking it over, “Is there any way I can persuade you to a demonstrate of this magic?”

“Honestly, if I had gotten any of the others, I would have still wished to have this ability.” She replies back ad nods her head slowly, understanding what exactly he meant by that. “I like it too, it’s so calming watching how water can change when you’re in control, how you can feel it change. It does.”

“Right?! Like, you totally get it!” He said, overjoyed that someone could relate to the things he loved about his gift. Sending the two streams of water back into the ball, he used one finger to write out his name atop the mass of water. “I’m Aldric, it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance. What’s your name?”

she wasn’t expecting him to ask about any self-portraits. some she had done had been quite abstract and difficult to explain, and honestly she just plain didn’t like them as much. in terms of a literal picture of her, however… “uh. one, yeah. i dont typically like to do myself in my art? feels biased or something. i’m always deliberately left out.” rosemary answered as she flicked through to the front. “we had to do a self-portrait in the style of our assessment, if that makes sense.” and there she was on the page, a juicy pomegranate bleeding down bare arms, hole in her chest where her heart should be, very subtle bruising hiding behind lace lingerie. persephone. “not my favourite.” 

He expected some grand drawing of the woman before him as perhaps Aphrodite or Selene. Maybe an angel unrelated to the Greeks, but what he actually saw was something else entirely. Something that sent of pang of hurt through the young man. Aldric took a long moment, examining every detail of the work, the blood, the hole in the chest, the bruising. It was a while before he said anything, but eventually he looked up from the artwork back to its subject. “Is..” he began slowly not knowing how exactly to articulate his thought. “Is this how you see yourself, Rose?” He asked, the faintest hint of sadness in his eyes.
