Barichara, continued
( click above for more photos )Side trip en route to Medellin from the north. Dan and I took a few dirty roads through the steep and windy foothills of the Andes, reaching a small colonial town called Barichara at the end of the day. Rocky but fun riding with a river crossing to boot, rewarded with one of the quietest settings yet... muy tranquilo.
End of Guajira, a return to the jungle and a trip to Barichara.
Guajira, continued.
La Guajira & Punta Gallinas, continued.
Detour up to the Guajira region of Colombia. Rough place, spent a few days getting lost, running out of gas, and crashing the bike about 8 times. We made it to the northern most point of South America, a spot called Punta Gallinas. Nothing out there but a lighthouse and family run Hospedaje that we camped at. Rang in my 31st year with some locally made moonshine and a whole lot of sand.
Stayed on the North coast of Colombia at a farm that a friend of a friend's family owns. It was a beautiful retreat tucked into the jungle, walking distance to the coast as well as waterfall framed swimming holes. We ate well and helped out a bit around the property, digging trenches and looking for lost cattle.
Cartagena, Colombia
On the "Steel Rat", a German boat built in 1904. Took a 5 day trip from Central to South America with 20 other people traveling via motorcycle, landing in Caratagena, Colombia on Dec 9.
Kuna Village in the San Blas Islands.
Kuna island in the San Blas.
Boquete, Panama and the road through the Kuna Yala territory toward the boat to Colombia.
Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.
San Cristobal de las Casas has it all; colonial Spanish layout, giant staircases leading to hilltop churches, shrubs that have been mangled into smiley faces, enormous electronic music festivals in historic squares, boy-band dance-offs in the theaters, and Sunday's full of local soccer matches. Oh, and cobblestone streets that turn to grease when wet, making 500 pound motorcycles a cute idea for transportation.
San Miguel de Allende - part tres, and driving south to Chiapas state in the central highlands of Mexico.
