Y’all know that I’m into ancient Roman history and I do a lot of research on it but even though I should be used to it by now sometimes I read an anecdote about how an individual slave was treated and I’m hit with the realization that like a third of the population was living like that and I just need to put my head in my hands for a second
Emperor Hadrian randomly stabbed a slave in the eye in a fit of rage and he was supposedly unusually sympathetic to slaves.
There’s other instances of people randomly punching slaves that they didn’t even know because they got in their way or something. This was just normal behavior.
And slaves didn’t rebel en masse because if even one slave committed an act of violent rebellion it was common practice to kill every slave and former slave in the household.
People only took notice for posterity when these mass executions got into the hundreds of people. One of the few recorded for the history books is of over 400 people being killed because one guy stabbed his enslaver.
Like how many people throughout history were beaten to death because some rich asshole was angry and there was no legal or social consequences for doing so? We don’t know.
When you study ancient history you’re reminded that slavery has never once been kind or justified. It just takes on different forms of evil in every time and place that it infects.
To honor the 26th anniversary of TATMR made these custom dolls of Mr Conductor and his cousin. I intended to release Junior last year but life got in the way. As controversial human characters are, i enjoyed watching those two and i feel like the movie should've focused on them.
I bought the suits from aliexpress for super cheap then added felt and ribbon to make the accents. Mr C is a playline allan i repainted to resemble Alec Baldwin's features, my odeal version would've blended George Carlin and Ringo Starr too but i was afraid to mess up his face if i attempted to draw a beard. Junior is a beach budget ken, i used an AA variant since in my reboot of Shining Time Station his actor doesn't have a set ethnicity so he can be played by anyone.
My take on Starboy concept ft Clawd Wolf as a Model.
There was a lot of conversation on twitter about the lack of a black disney prince so I made Starboy black. His name is Nasir which means helper in Arabic. I wanted to keep his design simple but changed his tunic to a kaftan.
Lore:
Nasir, a human and "fairy" hybrid, always felt isolated from the other fairies. He wants to be out there exploring planets and fighting evil. Unfortunately he is stuck babysitting a newborn star. Yes I'm keeping canon star because why get rid of one when you can have both?
Anyways, while the other fairies are away, Nasir intercepts a message from Earth. It's from a teenage girl begging for help. None of the other fairies are interested. In their minds, Earth is a backwater world with selfish people who cause their own problems. See, a long time ago, humans and stars coexisted in peace until humans got greedy and started wishing for more elaborate gifts, causing wars and widespread laziness. As a result, the wishing stars left but not without leaving a few traces of magic behind.
Wanting to prove himself, and because he couldn't sit by and let someone's prayers go unanswered, Nasir sneaks away to Earth. In this timeline Asha was already working for Magnifico when she finds out that he had been keeping wishes for years, but because he and Amaya are so beloved nobody believes her. Nasir offers to help her in exchange of teaching him about humanity.
Living in Rosas nasir begins to realize that despite their flaws most of them are decent people and just want to have a stable life. They see rosas as a paradise completely unaware that its rulers view them as cattle. Nasir finds his people with The Teens and he gains a better appreciation for Baby Star.
At one point, Nasir discovers that his parents stories were true! One if his ancestors had a relationship with a fairy. Even more surprising is that his ancestor was the original ruler of the islands that would become Rosas until Magnifico overthrew him and made it seem like the islands were already abandoned before he "found it". However before the prince died he had the royal mage hide the spell book, which Magnifico would find and use it to siphon people's wishes. The prince's lover left earth with their newborn baby, becoming Nasir's great grandmother.
Nasir is forced to reveal his secret when Magnifico threatens to kill Asha's family. We also learn that Amaya was in one his plan the whole time. This leads to Nasir getting captured and Asha banished. Thankfully Baby Star and Valentino reminds them of their faith and Asha manages to escape banishment and gathers her entire neighborhood to fight with her. Sabino rouses the people with his music, and a riot ensues.
In the final battle Magnifico turns himself into Cthulu and starts to suck up the sky but Nasir and Asha manage with a little help from the wishing stars themselves. Magnifico explodes into a supernova, Amaya is reduced to an old crone having lost her magic. The fairies arrive and are impressed by Nasir's work. Nasir decides to stay on Earth but instead of becoming king he makes Asha the new princess. The film with Asha's coronation a few months later and Nasir, now the royal astronomer, dancing with her.
That's basically all I have for Nasir's lore. I hope it isnt too complicated. I think having both stars would work, that way tou have a verbal star to sing a duet with and the cutesy nonverbal sidekick star. If he had a voice it would probably be Jordan Fisher or mah boi Anthony Ramos. Or maybe Miles Caton i dunno.
I've decided to merge canon abel with the one I made before his design was revealed. That had been a LONG time ago! BEFORE I had intended for him to be the hazbin's equivalent of the sandman with a herd of counting sheep. That's why he was wearing rich shades of blue compared to other angels, he was supposed to blend in with the night.
I couldnt figure out a way to draw his mustache so I ended up leaving it out mustache and just simplified his goatee. I changed the brooch to a hippie headband (no guessing what THAT represents). Oh, and I gave him brown skin to show that he is west asian/northern african. I was seriously considering making his eyes green like pasture but i kept them gold.
2 More nereus.top is my edit bottom is canon. Really abysmal how he's supposed to be black (being Aisha's cousin) yet LITERALLY HAS GRAY SKIN HE LOOKS LIKE BLEACHED TUNA.
I had a hard time figuring out what she look should be but then i realized the best outfits are the ones that are the simplest. My main inspiration is her live action and reboot outfits with some Mediterranean and african fashions since she and her family has Greek and Arabic names. Her fins resemble the ones on the mermaids since shes part merfolk in this au. You can't see it but the front part of her hair has reddish highlights.
For her magic winx her top his a half sheer toga like top with a jellyfish skirt (she has shorts underneath), arm bands and gladiator sandals with no heel. Her color is back to being green but with a sligtly blue undertone, and LOADS of pearls.
In my rewrite of s5 the winx club goes to tressa's coronation when they're attacked by a mysterious assassin. They end up separated from Tritannus (who at this point isn't a bad guy yet) and take the mersiblings on earth for protection. A lot of s5 is spent with nereus and tressa getting used to human culture as well as a growing friendship between roxy and tressa.
Since theyre in disguise I made their hair colors a lot less vibrant. I gave tressa a fairly simple outfit that highlights her athleticism, with black compression clothes to balance our the blue. I forgot to draw hibiscus patterns on her top since she's also soemthing of a coconut girl.
Nereus goes full boho here, no boring sweatshirt in sight! I want his style to be a lot different from the specialists; he spent a lot of time underwater so he might not be comfortable wearing tight clothing. I gave him a long green tunic and blue pants with white trim and ripple patterns. To keep his palette from looking boring i added orange and sand, and spme patterns on his tunic. He has a bit of african influence with his hairstyle, the large beaded jewelry and his new skin tone. Yeah I made him black since we dont have a lot of black princes in western animation and honestly, it's payback for all the whitewashing the franchise does. So nereus and tressa are black now! :]
I made the outfit from and used two accessories from the Alwayz line: Yasmin's boots and Sasha's purse.
Also I went to target and saw yasmin on sale for $15 so I got her. I love the shade of purple. Now that i think about it she kinda reminds me of Darcy!
Im trying to figure out my selfship lore with nereus and i think i have it figured out
I'm not a fan of season 5. Its completely dumbed down from the first 4 seasons (no thanks to having Nick jr writers on board), the fashions were lackluster, the villains were juvenile, and overall a downgrading experience. I also hate how the mermaids went from being a society ruled by women to being ruled over by a man and no, tritons and mermaids being separate "species" doesn't erase the fact that Tressa got overshadowed by her brother! So in my canon, all three siblings have coronations on the same day, Nereus and Tritannus ruling their share of the ocean while Tressa is the Head Honcho (as in she has the final word on really big matters). The winx are invited to the ceremony and bring Roxy as their plus one to help her get accustomed to magical affairs. They're there when the party is attacked by fish monsters, and while they put up a fight, they are forced to retreat after Ligea and Neptune are corrupted, bringing nereus and tressa along with them to Earth. At this point they don't know that Tritannus is the culprit and assumed he is in hiding with his court.
Meanwhile, I've just recently moved to Gardenia and got a job working at Klaus' bar. She does know about the winx and Roxy being magical but not Tressa and Nereus being mermaids. To show his gratitude, Nereus offers to help out around the bar and meets my sona. She finds him a little odd. So while the winx are in magix trying to sort things out I'm over here teaching an alien prince how to use a telephone.

Anyway, Nereus is glad to meet someone who isn't giving him special treatment for once, and I'm just happy to have an attractive guy who isn't a douche.
But, this being a rewrite things aren't always a walk in the park.
One day, Mysterious sludge seeping seep onto Gardenia's beaches, hurting the wildlife and affecting water quality. At the same time, a corporate entity arrives in town. We dont know it yet but it's owned by Politea. She secretly disgused herself as a human after selling Daphne out to the Ancestral witches, ans had been using magic to hide her disfigurement until she learned there was a high concentration of magic in Gardenia. There's no Trix involved. Tritannus is infatuated by her but it's obvious thay she sonly using him for personal gain. A stark contrast to the genuine relationship nereus and I have.
One night during closing time, we're attacked by mutants. I hide in the storage closet but Nereus is taken away.
I follow the kidnappers to a secret area near town, and thats when i see Tritannus for the first time. I see Nereus try to reason with him only to get brainwashed into flooding Gardenia. I try to go back to town to warn evrryine but fond myself blocked by ol' fishhead and im about to get eaten when the winx arrives just in time with the sword of neptune. Nereus comes to his senses and stops the flooding but it leaves a lot of damage including the bar.
Realizing how horrible his brother has become Nereus decides to fight back, going fsr as to teach Tressa andnthe winx sirenix as he and Daphne were the last known Users.
A fairy form? For a man in the winx universe?
I go along for the ride and get a mermaid form, i also unlock harmonix but its not very useful :P
Over time, everyone starts to see sparks forming between us, culminating in a date night that the girls (well Stella) planned for us. At first we're uncomfortable and suffer some inconveniences, we realize we enjoy each others company. I also help him get better fashion suited for his tastes, and I adopt mermaid inspired fashion.
By the final episodes we go back to Andros with some of the earth fairies. A massive brawl ensues between us and the mutants, in the middle of the conflict I'm knocked out and taken hostage by Tritannus
Just pretend that's me being kidnapped.
Bloom is too busy fighting, so Aisha tressa and Nereus run after him. Tritannus presents his capture to his boss, thinking he'll be rewarded but instead he has his trident taken from him and is almost killed along with Tressa, but nereus takes the blow for them losing his life in the process. Even though Tritannus is a monster that's still his brother and he refuses to let him die. That way, his sacrifce and revival feels earned. Ultimately, it's Aisha who defeats her cousin (I'm still salty about Bloom stealing that honor).
Once Tritannus is subdued I swim over to Nereus's body and start crying.
Not wanting to see us go through the same pain she went through losing Nabu, Aisha uses her wish to revive her cousins, but Tritannus is left disfigured by the amount of radiation he was exposed to. Realizing he had been played, Tritannus reluctantly surrenders and is taken to Lake Roccaluce for healing. Neptune for his part reflects on his own role in how his oldest child turned out and decides to hold off on the coronation so Nereus can explore himself, leaving Tressa as the sole ruler of the merfolk.
Afterwards the winx decides to throw a charity ball to donate to help cleaning up the flood damage. My sona and Nereus becomes official. He feels sorry about his brother but I tell him everything's going to be okay since he still has other family and me by his side.
Season 6 continues with Nereus and i still working at klaus bar and helping to repair Gardenia - he feels totally guilty even though he was brainwashed - Politea comes to town and runs for mayor, quickly gaining favor with the townsfolk but nereus and i are suspicious. We find out that shes the reason behind Tritannus corruption and Daphne's death. After defeating her we get engaged and by the time season 8 ends we're married. Between the main seasons we have our own side adventures cleaning up beaches whereever we go, interacting with the merfolk of andros, even fight the occasional bad guy. Nereus also teaches roxy royal life like joining the council of sovereigns and improving her ability to speak to AND turn into marine animals. I go back to college but end up running the bar after klaus sells it to me so he can retire and spend time with Morgana.
So that's what I have for seasons 5 and 6.
