Axel: Good mornin', bombshell ~
Fang: ’S nine o’clock a’ nigh’…?
Axel: I say good morning when I wake up despite the time it is. Problem?
Fang: -snorts- Nope.
The ceramic flowers were burning her hands. She gently pried her fingers away from the coffee mug in front of her and sat back in the chair balancing it on two legs. The envelope on the table sat thick and opened with blue trim around the edges. She knew that color. She'd seen in in Zack's eyes before he disappeared. Mako blue.
Fang winced and ran her fingers through her hair. Shinra was not the route she much wanted to go. It would give her plenty of extra power, sure, but the cost was too high and she didn't want to follow Zack in his fate. That was, in fact, the last thing she wanted. Strangely enough. Reno hadn't said anything about his boss showing interest in her, though she could understand him wanting to play it safe considering the less flattering jobs he'd had over the years.
"Gods damn i' all," she muttered under her breath. She moved forward to slide the envelope a little closer. It still sat unopened but then again an invitation to SOLDIER First Class was thicker than sin and she didn't much want to read the paperwork. She'd touched enough fires in the past year. Irritated and still undecided, Fang snapped her fingers and the envelope burst into flames, dissolving from bright green to a more natural red before extinguishing. A small pile of ashes rested on the counter but Fang was already up and gathering her coat and boots. Winter had come to Midgar again.
Well, it's been a good damn while.
Can' imagine you lot missed me much.
Hmph. Mos' of you.
What does my muse really think of yours?
this is me and ro, sometimes.
A New Year
"The hell am I doin' here," Fang turned the wheel sharply, feeling the Subaru Outback shift through the snow and gravel. Why Inara thought a trip to the Appalachian mountains was a good birthday present she had no damn idea. It'd been snowing steadily for almost three hours as she drove deeper into the mountains in search of a cabin with an impossible address. She and Axel had only just found "Smoky Ridge Drive" fifteen minutes ago and they were still weaving along the narrow road waiting for the cabin itself to appear.
Her redheaded companion was staring out the window seemingly much more ease with the towering pines and blanketing snow. Fang glanced at him and eased the gas pedal a little farther. The Outback surged forward past the treeline revealing exactly what she'd been waiting for. She pulled in next to the porch and cut the engine. The cabin was small but elegant and fancy as all get out. Fang climbed out of the SUV hearing the snow crunch under her boots. "Well, hell," she murmurer. "I like this idea."
She grinned at Axel and laced her fingers behind her head. The cabin sat in the middle of a clearing surrounded by trees and coated in snow. The air was cold enough that it made her a little dizzy. It was stilling snowing but the flakes were big and slow and drifting mostly without wind. The brunette promptly began removing bags from the car and hauling them up the porch steps.
Between the two of them they had barely enough stuff for her to carry. Fang unlocked the door and stepped inside, stepping out of her snow caked boots as she did. The interior was pretty and classically victorian, just Inara's style. The kitchen had a breakfast bar that opened into the living room. A door on the far wall had to be a bedroom. A sliding door and picture window dominated the wall opposite them, opening onto a balcony that overlooked the slope.
"I'll give her tha', Inara gives good gifts," Fang said kicking open the bedroom door and depositing her things onto the hardwood floor.
Yes.
R'Akka
Once the lights of this same city had made her feel safe, wanted even. Now she stopped, still gripping her bag to her chest, and watched the city lights come on. R'Akka had been her home. She'd grown up on its streets and reveled in the dry heat her whole life. Now, she wasn't coming home, she was entering a war zone. She was terrified. Terrified of death and the pain that it would mean and terrified of losing the one thing that meant more than herself.
She felt Axel take her hand but she didn't turn. Having him here was hard. She knew if she turned she would see the determined smile on his face and feel the heat that radiated from him but she couldn't bring herself to face those facts. She'd let him follow her here, into a threat that shouldn't have been his to face. She shook her head and rubbed the tattoo on her arm. With the desert sun sinking the temperature was dropping rapidly, she shrugged her leather on and turned to face him. "We have t' find, Inara," she said softly. It wouldn't help them for anyone else to hear them speaking anything but Pulsi. Axel nodded.
She pulled her hand back from him and moved into the crowd at the aerodome. It didn't take long to find Inara, who was standing within a carefully placed ring of admirers, who were dutifully complimenting the sultry red dress she'd chosen. Fang embraced her for a moment and whistled low, "A bit over the top don't you think?" The Pulsi words felt clumsy on her tongue.
Inara smiled and took her hand, "For you, never." She gestured for them to follow her and lead them out of the aerodome and into the street where a private car was waiting. Fang climbed in after Inara and glanced back. Axel was watching her warily. Impatiently, she pulled him in after her and slammed the door. "Inara, Axel. Axel, Inara. She happens t' be a childhood friend o' mine and she speaks english a damn sigh' better than me."
Inara nodded to the redhead and spoke in barely accented english, "A pleasure to meet you finally. Yun Fang has told me so very much about you."
Fang frowned, "Like hell I have."
"No," Inara smiled at her in a teasing way, "but you're usual sullen silence in being here and not there speaks volumes."
Fang was momentarily glad for her dark skin and the even darker lighting within the car.
“Time for a little bit of fluff!” Writing Prompt: Your OTP is having a discussion that turns into some cute innocent fluff. Enjoy!
Fang relaxed against the solid white porcelain. Inara always loved the classic Victorian style so it shouldn’t have surprised her that the bathing room held a massive porcelain tub with clawed feet. She wasn’t even all that upset that the bubble bath was infused with rose water. Some part of her was ranting about the strong scent being easily identifiable on the street but it didn’t matter to her. She was here, she was in danger, and gods all she was terrified. Just not for herself.
He didn’t bother to knock but he just stepped inside. The door shut with a click and Fang looked up just to see him slump against the door in the most exhausted way. She sat up just a bit, crossing her arms as she did. The bath was deep enough that the water and its thick white bubbles covered her to her shoulders. “You look like hell,” she told him softly.
Axel glanced up, red hair spilling back over his shoulders as he straightened. “I feel like hell.”
She smirked. “Wan’ a bath?” She held her hand out in a “come here now” gesture.
Axel laughed and shrugged. “Looks occupied to me.”
“If’n I have t’ ge’ ou’ of this bath jus’ t’ ge’ you in i’, I’m gonna drown you,” Fang insisted.
“Violent threats are not charming,” he replied calmly and pulled his shirt off. Fang rested her head on her hands and leaned against the side of the tub, waiting. They’d been in R’Akka for three days now and she was still half terrified that he’d get himself killed. Used to be that it was different. She’d always been so focused on keeping herself alive and getting what she wanted. Now she was searching for a way to cut her ties to that past and Axel was right here with her. She was both grateful and angry with him.
Axel lowered himself into the water and Fang immediately shifted to curl up against him. The water itself seemed to heat up just from him being there. She rested her chin on his shoulder and studied the lines around his eyes. He wasn’t sleeping well here. The heat suited the redhead just fine but he wasn’t used to he noise or the people and would wake at odd hours of the night, completely unable to sleep again. Fang wasn’t there often enough to chase his nightmares away either. She and Inara were working mostly odd hours trying to penetrate the Military base in R’Akka. They had to find a way in.
The fine lines around Axel’s eyes and mouth were the easily identified signs of his discomfort but Fang knew that the lack of sleep and the constant stress was hitting him harder in other ways as well. She frowned and tilted his chin down to kiss him. “You’re still no’ sleepin’ well.” It wasn’t a question.
Axel sighed and looked away. “Sounds like my whole existence if you ask me. Since when do I ever sleep well?”
“Since I’m around,” she reminded him softly. “If’n I’m with you, you don’ have your nightmares but lately i’ hasn’ kep’ them away.”
Axel dropped his head into his hands. “They’re just getting worse and I have no fucking idea why.” Fang reached up and pulled his hands away, gently kissing each palm. It wasn’t in her to tell him that everything would be okay. It wouldn’t. He was in more danger here than he’d probably ever been in, in his life because he was with her. Because he loved her.
Yeah, she knew that. He didn’t have to tell her. She could see it every time he looked at her and feel it in every little touch. It’d been that way since she’d come home nearly three months back. He loved her and it wasn’t in either of them to admit that they both knew she loved him back. Instead he was here, with his arm around her, threatening his own existence and she was trusting him to live through it all.
Homecoming [Axel]
She felt her lips turn up at the corners. “Of course, I am,” she murmured and the laughed. She frowned when he kissed her and pulled him back for a not-so-chaste kiss. It felt like something had changed in him, almost like he’d realized something. His expression wasn’t something she was used. Sure, the smile reached his eyes but not in the arrogant smirk she expected.
The feeling stuck with her. Fang stood and moved back into the cottage knowing that he’d follow her eventually. Axel’s blankets were still scattered across the bedroom floor and she moved around the room tossing them back on the bed. Her thoughts flinched away from the expression on his face but that didn’t mean her mind was going to let her pay attention to anything else. Irritably, she dropped down onto the bed, upsetting the blankets again and pulled her knees up to her chest.
What was gods damn happening anyways?
She’d seen men bleeding on the ground, she’d been the one to put them there, she’d done a lot that she wasn’t awful proud and it’d never bothered her. You’d think that, that would get to her before anything else. But it’d been Axel cowering against that wall, screaming at her to get away that’d had her scared and close to tears. She crossed her arms angrily and flopped backwards. That image still hurt. Sprawled on the bed with her hair tangled across the blankets she thought that maybe she should go home and take her shower. Get out of clothes that made her think of the desert and go to the garage before the landlord took it away from her.
It occurred to her that she was thoroughly frustrated but she stubbornly stamped that out as best she could.
She hated waiting. Fang didn’t like thinking about shit all the time. She’d rather be up and doing something. There wasn’t any sense in sitting around and worrying about what might happen or planning for tomorrow because it never fucking happened like she thought it would. She was stubborn and sarcastic and she’d been broken enough to realize that there was a hell of a lot wrong with her but that didn’t mean she had to sit around and whine about it. But that’s what she was doing. Thinking about the choices she’d made and the men she’d killed and the blinding wave of sheer fucking terror when she’d seen Axel a few hours ago wasn’t going to do much of anything good for her. Sure she regretted those things and yeah, she liked Axel plenty but that didn’t mean she wanted to think about any of that.
Axel was a little taken aback when Fang kissed him, but he still answered right away like he was used to. Once again, before he could come up with an idea of what he could do next, the brunette acted first; this time she stood up and calmly left him by himself on the porch to enter the cottage. The redhead did not complain. That was actually kinda of handy given the current situation.
As soon as he lost sight of her, Axel turned back his head to face the sea. The sun was shinning bright and warm in the blue sky, compensating the cold that the wind carried with it and crashed against his face.
A soft sigh left man’s lips, and suddenly his hands were hiding his face, his fingers easily sinking in between the red strands of hair. “This is getting out of hand…” he muttered, feeling that strange sensation in his stomach, like if there was a sleeping creature purring inside of it. He wanted to kiss her again. So badly, and for way longer time… but he was afraid that if he did we wouldn’t be able to get away after that.
Axel let go an exasperated groan. This wasn’t okay. Not the weird feelings he was noticing and definitely not the “freaking out part” about noticing them. But truth was… that if what he was assuming was true, he was convinced he was in his right to hit the Panic Button.
After all, what’s more terrifying than developing unwanted feeling for your best friend?
Fifteen minutes later Axel was pretty sure that he didn’t want to jump into conclusions, but he was also more than aware that the topic was far from irrelevant inside his head now, and it would remain like that at least for a while.
Groaning again and finally giving up, he stood up and dragged the blanket to put it over his naked shoulders before entering the cottage. His feet took him automatically to the bedroom, and to his not-surprise, Fang was sitting on his bed.
Leaning a shoulder against the door’s frame, he knocked two times and addressed her his best arrogant smile, “No need for frowny faces, I’m back already,” he announced. The best he could do now was to pretend as good as he could.
The brunette snorted. "You're an asshole," she told him evenly. Fang stood and stretched leaving her muddle of thoughts under the bed where it belonged. She still had to stand on her toes to kiss him, which she did, trailing her fingers across his shoulders. He still had a bit of that weird expression from earlier but she ignored it and kissed his collar bone. "You really augh' t' wear shirts you know," she gave him a mischievous grin. "Awful lo' of pretty girls tha' migh' like t' kiss you. Good thing, I'm no' one of them." She stepped back still within his reach but half undecided about what she wanted. Despite her best efforts to stamp out her uncertainty the feeling was still there. She was missing something big time.
She tugged her fingers through her hair impatiently and took another step away from him, almost absently. Fang was trying to remember just when she'd been missing something like this before, it felt sort of familiar. She'd always been such a stubborn woman, convinced that she knew everything and that she could have anyone she wanted to do anything she cared to with. Axel was her friend, sure, and she liked him just fine but she liked Reno and Zack just fine too before they up and left. She felt herself begin to frown. Something there wasn't quite right.
Fang glanced up at him. He was still standing in the doorway watching her like she might watch a cornered animal prowl around. Tense. Uncertain. Hell, that's about how she felt. It reminded her of her old life, of being caught up in a mission and the adrenaline and the fear that maybe this time someone would be putting a bullet in her. And then they'd come out successful and she'd go home to-
"Fuck me," Fang barked and turned away cutting off her thoughts with a decisive motion. She tried to turn it into a joke, with a sly smile over her shoulder, "Made you jump didn' I?" Sly, yeah, and awful scared sounding. The brunette sat down on the edge of the bed but didn't look at him. "You make me gods awful uncertain sometimes, you know tha'?" Her voice was soft and her right hand covered the jagged tattoo on her shoulder.
Homecoming [Axel]
Her hands easily traveled to his shoulders and started massaging them; Axel felt some sort of relief because the matter had been successfully avoided, even if he wasn’t so sure about Fang not noticing the whole sharing-colors-with-his-own-hair thing.
When he heard the Pulsi’s words though, he felt glad once again for having his face hidden from her. His instant reaction to what the young woman said was pretty embarrassing in his opinion, but his exaggerated shocked and then offended expressions probably had something to do with the fact that he was still a little overwhelmed.
He took his time to reply as he felt her hands still working on his tense shoulders, making his best to settle down instead of suddenly standing up and closing himself inside the cottage like he was feeling so tempted to. He didn’t even understand why was he so pissed off all of the sudden, but he was sure that it wasn’t because of Fang. Actually, Axel was starting to believe that he was getting mad at himself, and a very persistent voice in the back of his head not only agreed with that thought, but it also suggested that he was annoyed with the truth behind the brunette’s words.
As soon as he thought about it, the urge to leave increased, but suddenly, it went away as quickly as it arrived. A feeling of resignation started filling the redhead’s chest like an unavoidable flood, and finally he relaxed at the woman’s touch as he closed his eyes.
He knew it. He always knew it. Deep inside he had this dumb idea that if he pretended enough he’d be able to ignore the fact that he always slept better when he was with Fang. He also knew that it wasn’t about sharing bed with just anyone, because he didn’t even like sharing his bed. No, it was only Fang. No matter if it was after a long talk full of jokes and teasing until they fell asleep, or maybe doing it instantly after some rough sex, he would never had nightmares if he could feel her body heat against him. The best proof lied in the fact that the last nightmare occurred while she had left the room.
Fang was like a safe place to land, a calming pill, or a comfortable blanket. There was no way to deny that. When he was with her, Axel’s mind felt sane. A weak smile crashed into his lips, defeated.
“You’re right,” he muttered with a chuckle, straightening it up enough to look at her. “I kinda owe ya some nights, I guess. Thanks bombshell,” and then he leaned to press a chaste kiss against her lips.
She felt her lips turn up at the corners. "Of course, I am," she murmured and the laughed. She frowned when he kissed her and pulled him back for a not-so-chaste kiss. It felt like something had changed in him, almost like he'd realized something. His expression wasn't something she was used.
