What role does the bedroom play in our ‘new normal’ of COVID-19? It is a place of rest, recharge and relaxation. Now, it is also my art studio and workspace, and the place where I will finish my university degree. It is where I engage with the big wide world online, and communicate with friends and family. Where I blog, journal, and make phone calls. Where I sleep and online date. Where I plan my future. Where I have job interviews. Where I self-isolate and social-distance. Where I Zoom and Microsoft Teams my classmates. One place, many roles.

I’m back in my family home. I’ve moved out of my sharehouse. Now my bedroom is this odd combination of my childhood space and the last 4 years of my University life, smooshed together inbetween 4 walls.

I have way too much stuff, also.

“We still don’t know the election result! But my family in America think that Biden will win. Hopefully when I wake up we’ll know about Nevada at least. Today the weather was awful, so I couldn’t drive to campus to study like id hoped. Sad. Eleanor convinced me to go after lunch when the weather was slightly less miserable anyhow. We went to Ainslie with Keira for wine and cheese after our study sesh which was cute and went much longer than expected. Oh and I got a call back about a job, but it was confusing, because the manager said I was overqualified and didn’t call for an interview, so I’ll be applying for their other openings now. A bit strange, but a positive phone conversation otherwise. And I applied for 4 positions at Woolworths, just in case :)”

We were here in July 2019, and boy we had no idea what was coming. Can’t wait to do it again when uni is over.

Journal excerpt

“I’ve recently been going onto campus to get all my study done. Surprising, as it’s where my friends are. I usually end up spending money too, but I’m easy on myself for doing that because at least I’m eating, and I can afford to (thanks Centrelink!).

I finally posted an ad for my room too, as I’ll be moving out in less than two weeks!!? Very strange feeling. It turns out my friends are going to miss me more than I thought they would, too. If I think too much about it, and how I’m leaving them all here in Canberra while I move home for summer (and possibly longer?) I’ll get sad. And I don’t have the time to be sad. I have exams. In fact, writing this probably counts as procrastination.”

Tomorrow is going to be big. Both in the sense that I have SO MUCH STUDY to do, but mainly in the sense of the U.S. Presidential Election.
