Her voice was quiet, weak and strained from evident pain, but her chest rose and fell softly. Slowly, her hand went to her waist and she grimaced as her fingers came into contact with the wet warmth of a fresh wound, but she didn’t fuss. Didn’t jerk. Just laid there.
“Definitely alive. Definitely been shot.” A pause. “...Again.”

Last thing you need is some animal eating it and spreading whatever virus that bastard made.’’ Jeri went on all fours and headed to leave ‘’Suppose you wouldn’t be willing to give me a ride?’’
Turn and leave. Get in the car and drive away, and call the local police. This wasn’t a matter for her community to deal with.
She slowly lowered her gun, letting it fall to her side. She was still for a moment, letting the barrel tap slowly against the side of her knee, and then she grimaced.
“Don’t touch the radio. I got it how I like it, n’ frequencies ain’t exactly common this far in the outback.” She turned and walked away, grimacing slightly. Stupid woman, stupid idea. Stupid. But she didn’t stop. “And be quick about it. Night’s wastin’ and I’d rather be there before the sun rises.” She glanced back.
“...Nothin’ personal, you’re just ugly.”

“Not as often as you’d think.” She picked up her trousers and pulled them on. One leg was designed shorter than the other, fitting comfortably and perfectly over the prosthetic, and she rolled the other up slightly to tug on her boot.
“I can think I’ve got a day to myself n’ then someone can text sayin’ need you, get here now. And I go.” She paused. “...’s part of the job.” She pulled her jacket on and stood up, pulling her hair out of the collar as she looked back at her. HIM. Jesus, this was a tough one.
“Sorry. You picked...the complicated one.”
