the femme had felt off all morning, trying to brush it off as nothing more than a restless night, yet she soon found herself on the ground of her bookstore with a few concerned patrons gathered around her. as she was loaded into the ambulance, rae felt her anxiety steadily growing, quickly tipping into panic as one of the paramedics who was checking her vitals approached with a needle, explaining that he needed to start an iv to administer fluids. “listen, i’m terrified of needles, so just please be gentle.” the redhead turned her head away, desperately searching for anything that might distract her and keep her attention fixed on anything but on the needle. rae was only drawn from her distraction when the paramedic beside her praised her for how well she was doing. a strange sense of calm washed over her at his words, easing some of the tension from her body as she finally lifted her gaze to meet his.
Ben makes his way inside the club his head on a swivel as he looks for them. Their friends had called him from their phone because he was saved as "boyfriend". He hadn't blown their cover and sounded every part the concerned boyfriend as their friends told him they were too drunk and wanted him. Ben grinned the whole drive downtown to the club. Ben is not their boyfriend but here he is spotting them hunched over in a booth with their friends all wide eyed. Ben is on them in a second with a big hand pressed to their shoulder as he glances down at the other. "Hey baby your friends said you've been missing me. I'll be your Uber home. " Ben smirks down at them as his hand slips down their back to soothe them. He is not their boyfriend but he's got no problem pretending that he is. "C'mon lemme see you. Look at me."
open to: m/f/nb plot: your muse has either used his boyfriend for hire services or they been hooking up and your muse has him saved as boyfriend in their phone
They had met at a party a while back and what was meant to be one night together had gradually evolved into something that wasn’t a relationship but definitely wasn’t entirely casual anymore. One night, Rae had jokingly changed Ben’s contact in her phone to “boyfriend” then changed her own to “girlfriend” to match, not thinking much about it until she had far too much to drink with her friends. When one of them asked if there was anyone who could come pick her up, the redhead had mumbled something about her boyfriend before dissolving into a fit of giggles at whatever her friend said next. The moment she spotted Ben making his way toward them, her eyes lit up and a bright smile immediately tugged at her lips. “You came for me?”

they pulled away, and eddie felt as though he was marooned again. a vicious cycle, something never - ending ; he wondered whether he would ever be able to break from it, or if working himself to the bone had embedded itself into his psyche. a soft hum at her words. it was something, it was an attempt to get him back on the straight and narrow — eddie wondered why rae hadn’t simply given up on him, hadn’t thrown in the towel on the third, forth, fifth occasion of him not taking care of himself. who would have known that he would carry such heartbreak. they didn’t show that in indiana jones. running his hand against the slight stubble that he had let grow at the corner of his chin, he flicked through the menu with another affirmative noise. “that looks good, yeah.” his lips pressed to the crown of her head, gently sighing. it was a tenderness long overdue. “there’ll be something.”
her friends had asked her on more than one occasion why she stayed. there had been a few moments when the femme had nearly given in to that doubt, moments when the house felt unbearably full yet completely empty. and still, she stayed. rae stayed for the small, unspoken things. the space he always left for her beside him on the couch on nights when he was bent over scattered notes and half-forgotten thoughts. the little trinkets he would pick up simply because they reminded him of her. taking her phone back, she placed the order without another word before curling into him once more, as though their closeness could quiet the fear inside her. “i love you, eddie. i don’t want to lose you.”
best friend. whenever oliver heard it, it stung him like a needle to the chest — and yet he was unsure why he couldn’t just tell rae the truth. that he felt more, that he ached for more, that her face often turned up in his dreams ( when he was able to sleep at a reasonable hour ). working nights did that to a person, turned them upside down and threatened to isolate them entirely from the world at large. the weight of her head on his shoulder caused ollie’s heart to skip. a slow breath. he tilted his head to look at the dark, star - spackled sky. “we can talk,” he replied, with the breath of laughter to offset the wobble in his voice, “it’s just … it’s hard to know how much to say. work is really taking it’s toll, but nobody wants to discuss morgue work at the best of times.”
rae longed to know what it would be like to be wanted by him, to finally confess and hear those same words returned without hesitation. “i don’t mind. you could go into excruciating detail about your work and i’d still listen. i like listening to you.” her admission slipped out in a quiet voice, the words leaving her lips before she even realized what she had said. the redhead instinctively curled closer to oliver as the breeze shifted, seeking the warmth of his body as she tucked herself against his side. “so spare me no detail. i want to hear everything.”
ephraim swallowed a laugh. “okay,” he replied, and eyed rae as she walked away ; indulged himself a good, long look from head to toe. it made no sense that she was so critical, that she didn’t see herself in the same way he saw her. someone jaw - droppingly stunning, someone that was far too hot to be merely a neighbor … he inspected his nails as he waited, preening like a dominant bird, and then he heard her return. dark eyes blew wide. he started moving towards her near instantly, slow steps, circling her, a vulture. “you’re kidding me, right ? ” ephraim shook his head once, slowed, crossed his arms over his chest, “you think i care about the color ? you look … incredible.”
the moment his gaze settled on her, the femme felt the instinct to hide before he could find fault in the lace, in the fit, in her. rae held her breath as ephraim circled her slowly, resisting the urge to fold in on herself and cover up. when he finally spoke, warmth rushed across her skin, a soft flush returning to her cheeks. “are you sure? i feel like it might clash with—” her words trailed off as she caught the intensity of his gaze, the way he looked at her as though there was nothing out of place at all. suddenly, the redhead was grateful for the small accident that had led the package to him instead of her. “would you like to see one of the others? did you have a favorite from the ones you opened?”

❝ are you hearing yourself ? -- you honestly think i have a thing for your friend. ❞ the laughter he couldn't contain, he'd rather laugh than get upset or start and argument. ❝ for you to believe me, what do i have to do.❞
“what else am i supposed to believe? you're constantly at her side, seeking her out, asking for her, doing things for her without hesitation. it doesn't seem wrong to assume she means something more to you." the femme hadn’t intended for the conversation to unravel like this, yet with each passing moment her frustration only grew. “so, just tell me why you've been doing all of that."
for @ofbookshelves plot : here !
Valentine feels a frustration sitting in the pit of his stomach. He loathes being wrong, loathes being in a spot where someone can say 'I told you so!' Especially now, as he has to face Rae. His hand grips the steering wheel, the car clunking on the side of the road. And how convenient, right as they stopped going at each other's throats.
"Don't even say a word," he says with a exhale through his nose.
Rae wasn’t entirely sure whether she wanted to laugh at the absurdity of the situation or simply give in and cry. They were nowhere near their destination, both exhausted and hungry, and now they were left with yet another problem to solve. “I won’t say a word about that. But I will say that we need to find somewhere to stay for the night while you get this fixed. Think you can handle calling a tow while I find us somewhere with a vacancy?”

"I really fumbled hard when it came to you. I also realize now might not be the best moment for a football metaphor... but it's true."
"At least it fits the situation and you're being honest. Now, were you just here to apologize again or was there something you needed?"
i’m out visiting my sister for a few days so i’ll be back online on wednesday!!
“rae … ” it came as a breath, and oliver gently shook his head. there was nothing to worry about, simply a man that had needed a moment to think — working at the morgue brought a heaviness that he hadn’t expected ; fresh, cool air against his face would do him a world of good. “i was always going to be okay, come on. don’t say you were actually worried about me ? ” the words hung in the air as he looked at her, pale blue eyes focused on her features, smiling as they settled beneath the blanket. together. “it’s nice not to be alone. thank you.”
“you’re my best friend. of course i worry about you.” and yet, the femme knew her concern reached beyond the bounds of simple friendship. there were moments when she felt the truth settle on the tip of her tongue, but the risk of losing him and fracturing what they already had was enough to keep her silent. instead, rae rested her head against his shoulder, her gaze drifting out across the slow, rhythmic pull of the waves. “i’m glad i can at least offer you good company. would you prefer silence or conversation as i can provide either?”
effortlessly he curled into her hold, as though he was coming home after a long day. a steady breath escaped him, and for a moment that was all he could bring himself to do ; to hang in her embrace, to feel the warmth of another body after days of isolation. it might not be a permanent fix, but it was something — a night where the eldest living rietveld could live like a normal person for a few hours. “dinner and music sounds perfect,” eddie admitted. slowly he pulled away, and he moved like a ghost through the room towards the record player in the corner. he lowered the needle, a dulcet melody starting to throb from the speakers. thoughts raced through his head, but he pushed them all aside ; his focus was rae, and rae alone. “what are you thinking for food ? ”
the femme held onto him as though the moment she let go, he might vanish entirely. rae took a few steadying breaths before she allowed him to slip from her grasp, though her attention never wavered from him as he crossed the room toward the record player. the soft hum of the melody filled the space and she found herself echoing it under her breath as she reached for her phone to order food. “there’s a new place just around the corner. they do all kinds of noodles and the portions are generous enough that we’ll have leftovers for days.” the redhead knew how easily he could fall back into old habits, skipping meals without thought and hoped that something simple to reheat might be enough to keep him fed. drifting back toward him, she placed her phone in his hand so he could look over the menu, then settled against him once more, resting her head lightly against his chest
there was nothing else to do but let out an almost bark of laughter, a surprised reaction to her sudden disappearance. he stared at the closed door, wondering what she could be doing behind it, considering peeling away and returning to his own apartment to try again later. just as he was about to turn on his heels he heard the click of the latch, the familiar voice of rae once again. ephraim’s tongue ran against the straight pegs of his front teeth, the corner of his mouth ticking upwards. “you know what ? i think that’s a great idea. i’ll clear my diary,” but there was nothing more important in that moment than her, and he walked into the apartment as though he was being pulled by a magnet, “you better get it on quick.”
rae knew she shouldn't be yet she still found herself surprised by the interest he took in watching her try on her latest purchase. “i’ll be right back.” the femme disappeared down the hall and slipped into her bedroom to change, still wondering if ephraim was merely indulging her or was there genuine interest behind his attention? the process took longer than she had anticipated, the delicate fastenings far more intricate than they had seemed at first glance. the redhead paused at her mirror, drawing in a steadying breath as she looked herself over, willing her nerves to settle before she made her way back out to the male.“i’m not entirely certain about the color. there were other options so i could always exchange it.”

"god, there's nothing like a girl and her favorite conspiracy."
"it's not a conspiracy! it's more of an unconfirmed idea."
it wasn’t hard for her, or anyone, to be drawn to jordan. the redhead had spotted him the moment he walked into the bar, attention now split and only half-listening to the man seated beside her. rae wasn’t having the time of her life, but she was content enough, caught up in conversation until a familiar blond decided her attention was required elsewhere. “jordan, you can’t do that! hey, wait!” she called after him but her voice was swallowed by the music as he disappeared into the crowd. “first off, he wasn’t a freak. he was really sweet. and second, i do hate you. you’re a self-absorbed asshole who won’t leave me alone. you’ve ruined my past three dating attempts.”
