medusa.
Octavia had come back the next day, per instruction, which was completely out of character in all honesty for her, but the world was changing after all. They’d been too over stocked that night, so once they’d seen, slathered, and wrapped her up she was sent on her merry way with a bottle of pain killers and told to come back in the morning.
It was one o’clock, so technically it wasn’t the morning, but this was considered morning for Octavia. The hospital was still flooded with victims of the attacks from the night previous, and so lacking space that they’d condensed rooms and had lost most of the organizational system that previously held strong.
That was how Octavia found herself in the same room for what, for lack of a better term, could be considered a check up with an unconscious Kane. The nurse had told her she’d be ‘right back’ with paper work to sign following the end of her appointment, but Medusa knew that really meant when she got a free minute, considering the overflow of patients requiring attention.
She was scrolling aimlessly through her phone, using the one eye that hadn’t been swollen near shut by the burns and the gauze to follow to posts when from the corner of said good eye she saw Kane wake.
“Sleeping beauty, how are we feeling?”
It’s subtle - the smell of antiseptic, the creaking wheels of hospital beds as they’re pushed down tile halls - and then it isn’t, Kane’s consciousness bringing everything around him into his awareness. The monitor to which he’s hooked warns him of his escalating heart rate before he feels it himself - panic, he’s panicking.
She’s the first thing he sees - gauze is spread across her skin and it compounds against the setting in a way that makes Kane sick.
He hates hospitals.
She’s asked him something, and after a minute he realizes what’s been said - he makes like he might respond, but he’s halted as he notices the mask over his mouth, feeding him oxygen.
It makes his skin crawl.
Naturally, his first thought would be to get it off, but when he goes to move his arm, he is immediately chided by sharp pains. It doesn’t do him well - what ought to be giving him breath does nothing but confine him, freak him out, choke him.
All things considered - heart monitor delivering a dangerous crescendo as time passes - it was not his best look.
[ arden ] : whats that i hear?
[ arden ] : you want to go speed dating with me?

[ significant annoyance ] : yes, yes i did.
[ significant annoyance ] : Kane I'm hungry

[ kane ] : why are you like this
[ kane ] : no one likes you
It was routine. Finish a job, make a report, get a new job, ignore it for a few months, actually do it, carry on. Simple enough. The Hotel wasn’t a place Kane liked to be, preferred to be, his being there simply a product of necessity. He’s always been lucky - though he would call it skill - and today he is supremely so. A floor below the fire’s start, he doesn’t notice it right away, doesn’t notice it until it’s uncomfortably hot, until it’s spreading faster than he can run, until the ceiling is caving in on him. Until he chokes, until a sharp pain at the back of his head takes his consciousness away. The world goes black, in more ways than one.
The first thing Kane recognizes as he comes to is pain, incredible pain, and the want to scream - but a throat too dry and lungs too choked to actually make a noise.
[ significant annoyance ] : are you still trying to get out of this?
[ significant annoyance ] : plus, we are friends, you booger.

“Everything is so black and white to you. But life is never so simple, you can’t simply say that’s that when nothing can be defined so easily.” Both of them had been trapped within this maze; dying that with each twist and turn they would find the end. Life was far too complex. Death was a cruel kindness. In order to become free of the pain, you have to leave loved ones behind. This act often called selfish was actually something heroic and kind. “You’re missing that whole grey area. Nothing on this fucking earth can be named in an instant. Life and death is not that simple. How dare you say that to be true.”
“And how would you know? Have you ever held a dying child? Whose breath became so vigorous you heard it’s last? Have you ever had your beloved ripped from your arms twice? Life is nothing but a fucking con.”
How would you know? Of course. Kane was nothing but a pretty face and a blatant lie and a disappearing act. Kane didn’t get the luxury of humanity, not with those around him, who never bothered with much more than what Kane presented as himself, a thin film holding in his troubles based solely on surface tension and prayer.
How would you know?
Maybe it’s not a child. But it was parents, who were distant, but his. Parents slaughtered and leaving him on his own, with bow calloused hands and a tremor in his shoulders. It was a lover who welcomed exactly what she claims a warrior’s end. No. That gun shot still echoed in Kane’s ears at night when he tried to sleep, that gun shot that went through his lover’s head, that gun shot that broke the seal and poured his blood into the streets.
Kane could still feel it between his toes sometimes - sometimes he would throw his shoes off as if they were full of it, as if he were up to his ankles.
How dare she assume he had not known pain, that he had not faced death. The scars on his wrists on his thighs boasted enough his familiarity, without the story behind them. Con-men did not become cons by choice, but by necessity.
Of course he knew that life was a fucking con.
But he did not get the luxury of pain, nor a pinch of credibility, because he was a liar and a cheat. He understood that. A superficial, conceited, cheat.
He was pretty and that was it.
“I may not know pain as you know pain, but I do know that to die by choice is a colossal act of cowardice, given that it’s not in the defense or for the benefit of others.” He should know. He was no warrior, he was no fighter. He was a coward. He knew what this was like. “There is no freedom in death, there is nothing in death besides the ability to think, in whatever eternal plane of consciousness you end up in, whatever heaven or hell, that you took the easy way out and to watch as the select group of people who happened to give a shit about you suffer in your wake.”
patroclus.
“Is not a lie.” Not really, not completely and that is enough. “Your question wasn’t specific enough.” He explained, crumbling the card before safely keeping it in his pocket, away from prying eyes. “It really is just a phone number.”
The offer, he has to admit, is tempting. This is a secret that he has been holding back for sometime, unable to talk about it with anyone in fear of Jared finding out about it but if he were to dump his troubles in a total stranger….
“Thank you, really. I appreciate the offer but…There is no trouble to be told.” Not without making all too real, too tangible. If he doesn’t talk about it, he can ignore it and everything can go on as normal, there is no problem to fix. “Sorry for wasting your time, though.”
“Specificity and technicality... smart of you.” That’s how Kane’s business works, this idea of answering vague questions with vague answers, sold as specificity. Made a good liar - made a better con. Not that Kane believed this man to be one, but it was a good foot in the door.
“You loss, not mine. Just an offer - take it or leave it. But don’t fool yourself.” Kane looks the other man over, from the pocketed card to the tension in his shoulders and the joint of his jaw. “There is trouble. Best get it out of your system somewhere before it eats you alive, mm?”

hermes.
Hearty laughter burst from his mouth as Kane flinched away from him as if he suddenly ignited into flames. Adam clapped his hand onto the other’s back and jerked him back into the space he had put between them with a jovial rattle and shake. “Don’t be a sourpuss, ‘Sis. I’ll take you to the bloody ER right after and they can take a look at that terrible little blister you’ve got there too.”
His body tenses immediately as he’s drawn in and he tries, as best he can, to maintain any sort of space possible.
“Fuck off, mate.” He puffs, shoving at the other.
“I don’t need a bloody ER, actually I feel like a bloody ER would be the exact opposite of what I need, so lets just trash the idea all together.”
eros.
Russ chuckled softly beneath his breath at the other man’s observation. He sipped at his drink again before setting it back down on the bar, gently resting a napkin over the glass. “That is possibly the understatement of the year.”
He looked beside himself to the man, wondering if he had seen him anywhere before the gala. Anybody who had any form of business with the late Harvey Johnson had some form of business with the gang. Or gangs…
“But what about you? Having a good time?”
Kane’s smile is easy, practiced to the point of believably, and he holds his ground quite casually as the other takes a look at him.
“Oh, I’m having a time.” He chuckles, glancing back over his shoulder towards the room. Some faces he recognizes and others, not so much, but he’s no fool. He knows that the whole room is connected, more or less. They all have blood on their hands - some were just more thorough with the clean up.
“I’ll take any excuse to put on a costume.” That’s what this was, of course. Keeping up appearances - costumes. This was a show - not an event.
icarus.
Kit shrugs, “I guess not”
“Would it be too much to tell you that I could make your night worthwhile?”
“That depends -”
“On how much it’s going to bite my wallet in the ass.”
[ significant annoyance ] : by responding you made it a you problem
[ significant annoyance ] : if you could bring me a salad that would be awesome
[ significant annoyance ] : don't forget im allergic to nuts
[ kane ] : whatever
[ kane ] : i'll think about it
[ kane ] : and by think about it i mean continue to sit here and promptly forget this conversation ever happened
icarus.
Kit smiles, considering how much he’s going to charge this man for his time anyways. He has a system set in place by Grace, but that’s always relitave to whatever really ends up happening. No rules past that. As the door opens to the floor Narcissus’ room is on, Kit does a double take when he hears what the rule he was talking about was.
“No touching”
Kit frowns, and wonders for half a second if this man fully understands Kit’s chosen career path, before deciding he doesn’t care all that much. Maybe he means he’ll get a free blowjob out of it. Some people prefer giving than receiving anyways, Kit reminds himself.
“As long as you know what we’re doing” Kit muses as the door to the room opens, and he follows the man inside.

“Good to know” Kit smirks, sipping at his ginger ale. “What brings you out and about then?” he asks, making small talk as the gala swells around them.
“Opportunity.” Kane shrugs, glancing away.
“Fun. The hell of it. Do I have to have a reason?”
