my postcards in the sky album post. omg. i am so scared.

before we get started, just a note: this post will be concerning the 8 new songs on the album. there are 16 songs total, 8 of which were released earlier this year in 2 eps. i have separate posts for each of those eps where i talked about my song feels in great depth and i doubt anyone wants me to do THAT all over again. so. just the new stuff. or rather the new new stuff since it’s all pretty new.

oh how i love this song, let me count the ways!!! honestly this is my favorite new song. just the first beat has a huge smile starting on my face, it feels so hopeful and loving and true. i can’t say enough about how happy it makes me. it’s not about a perfect world, but a real world where we can choose to share our hearts (scars and all) and find joy and recognition and love. it is so transcendent. it’s like the ultimate david archuleta song. like how is he gonna knock it completely out of the park on the very first song of the album??? how do you follow that up?? also this song has the distinction of hosting perhaps the best lyric i’ve ever heard: FEAR IS ONLY LOVE TURNED COLD. fear is only love turned cold. when i heard that line i was like boom, it’s over. blown away. you guys. i really love this song. i mean. really.

upset with me. deep breath with me here kiddos because this song is not easy. it’s jagged and genuine. uncomfortable, if that’s even possible with that amazing voice singing and doing ridiculous things with a note and melody. because sonically this song is so so soooo well done. lyrically it slices right in. i’m not even joking when i say i had to stop listening to the album after this song. my heart was racing and i felt hollow in my stomach. it is unspeakably beautiful and striking. i just sat in complete silence for about 10 minutes after listening the first time. then i hit replay and listened again. i feel this song on such a deep level. you cannot listen and not be affected.

if i’m not enough to show you who i am after all i’ve done then it’s too tough for you to understand. i’m taking back what’s mine we both sacrificed gave everything we had but i don’t have to give you my life. i know you’re upset with me but you can’t keep hurting me.

i’m not sure what i’m running to for now it’s something i needed to do i need to keep me safe from you. you still can’t see. why can’t you see.

painted eyes reaching for the sky as we reach the moon busting clouds, oh you scream so loud so i hide from you. i never said a word to you so i hide the truth. what did i do. what did i do.

[there’s that deep breath]. what to say. the fact that david is willing to be this vulnerable and open is breathtaking. of course i had immediate thoughts about what (who) i felt he was talking about in this song. i still do. but the more i thought the more i thought… this is probably an unpopular opinion but i hope people don’t ask david for the specifics behind this song. not because i don’t want him to share if he wants to but because i don’t want him to feel he has to give out everything of himself. some things are his. some details belong to him. maybe he’ll be fine sharing but i won’t ask it of him. this song alone is so much. sometimes it’s like baby birds eating mama bird alive. i don’t even actually know what i’m saying jfc but just i can’t contain all my feelings and this song honestly touched me on such a deep level and i see so much of david here but also see that he belongs to himself. i’m saying this wrong so i hope something of my thoughts are making sense. this is the song i was most afraid to talk about because my feelings are so complex about it and i didn’t want to say it wrong but there’s no right way to say it. just. i think this is one of the most brilliant and raw songs i’ve ever heard in my life. genius. nothing about genius is comfortable. so. yeah.

DISNEY MOVIE SONG. legit you guys. we so needed this after the last song and david says, here, let me sing you my very own disney song to soothe your heart and it does it does does doessssss this song is so precious and uplifting and it has a driving beat and a power note and fun chorus and i am so jamming to this on many roadtrips and screaming YOUR STORY’S WAITING IN THE STAAAAAAAAAAAAAARS because yes. yes. i cannot stop smiling. i love this. listen to this happy song omg your life will thank you. why is david not a disney prince yet. it defies logic.

dodging all the sticks and stones scared a word might break a bone but if you stand and hold your own you will see you’re not alone. i know it gets hard sometimes to live with a heart of light.

seasons. this song is so preeeeeettyyyyyyy omg perfect voices. it’s a duet! with a girl named madilyn paige who has such a lovely voice and it melds really well with david’s. it’s a love song. a sad love song. a sad beautiful lost love song.

there must be some kind of reason we keep changing through the seasons. it gets harder to believe in the reasons why we start when we just break each other’s hearts all over.

cracks of heaven. i think if you’ve lost someone close, this song really speaks to you. i immediately thought of my dad when i heard it. not gonna lie, i cried a little. david archuleta why you gotta sing my heart when i didn’t even know the words were there?? the sentiment is so lovely, that we never really lose someone because they’re with us in everything around. i’m trying not to get emotional typing this up right now but that’s clearly a fool’s battle.

i thought this empty house would be more quiet but i can hear your voice whisper loud. i close my eyes and it’s like you’re still here with me. without you i thought it would be a ghost town i was afraid my heart would stop. it hurts from missing you but what gets me through is knowing, knowing i’ll see you in the morning light i see you in the midnight sky i feel it everywhere around me never have to say goodbye. it doesn’t matter where i go i feel you in every memory i hold until i see you again through the cracks of heaven.

DISNEY SONG, PART 2! omg. david archuleta is the master of real life disney songs and it makes me so so sosoooooooooo happy. this is such an earworm and i find myself singing random lines from it throughout the day. it’s just like love and hope and persistence realized in song form. the high pulsing tone in his voice in the chorus has me like YES THAT’S CLASSIC DA. hello.

you’re gonna fall but that isn’t all your story. some day you’ll rise and then you’ll realize there’s more we don’t understand and hold in our hands.

aiming for hope. confession: i’m still working on this one. i know several people who said this song is their fav on the album but i just haven’t really connected with it yet. it’s gorgeous, has some very nice string work going on and david sings it very well but i haven’t been able to get into it. i’m sure this will change completely when he sings it for me live. HAHAHA. (legit).

a little goes a long way. you guys, this is almost a little like a country song! maybe just at the beginning. and a bit in the chorus. lol. it’s uptempo and head bobby and cute! a nice way to close out the album!! it makes me smile.

take a moment and just step back before you give yourself a heart attack you been too worried about what you lack time to breathe and get you on track.

so. this album. wow. it’s so good. i have to keep reminding myself it’s not just the 8 new new songs. it’s 16 songs released this year. a 16 song album that charts a huge part of the story of david. where he learned so much about himself. it’s fully amazing to listen to all the songs and know it’s all coming from a place of genuine feeling. i’m so impressed with what david has created. slow clap forever.

Archie says the reason why he chooses to cover this new song (and this is somewhat already out of character for him, since he’s fond of covering old songs that resonate with him) is because he is so moved by the story of the artist – and knowing dear Archie, who never covers any song that isn’t meaningful to him, it’s also most likely because he’s able to personally relate to the story of the song.

So. Let’s try to listen to the lyrics, shall we? Because it’s all totally a coincidence, of course.

Once I was seven years old, my mama told me, “Go make yourself some friends or you’ll be lonely.” Once I was seven years old

It was a big big world, but we thought we were bigger Pushing each other to the limits, we were learning quicker Once I was eleven years old. My daddy told me, “Go get yourself a wife or you’ll be lonely.” Once I was eleven years old

The first thing that stands out to me in the lyrics is the difference between the mama and the daddy; the daddy is a little bit more insistent about getting married, about getting a wife.

It’s totally a coincidence that Archie comes from a strong Mormon background that promotes precisely that kind of lifestyle, and it’s also totally a coincidence that (even though we will never know for sure, especially because Archie has always spoken well of him) there had been rumours of his father being a stage dad, especially during the Idol days.

I always had that dream like my daddy before me So I started writing songs, I started writing stories Something about that glory, Just always seemed to bore me ‘Cause only those I really love will ever really know me

Again with the pressures from the father. And Archie has always loved writing too – not just songs, but also in general, as he has always kept a blog, after all. And he has always made it clear that the reason he writes music is not for the fame and fortune of it, but simply for its own sake, for the love of it.

And he has always kept in touch with people who truly matter to him. Enough, perhaps, to reunite with that person, even after being away for two years.

And speaking of being gone…

Once I was twenty years old. My story got told Before the morning sun, when life was lonely Once I was twenty years old.

I only see my goals, I don’t believe in failure 'Cause I know the smallest voices. They can make it major I got my boys with me at least those in favor And if we don’t meet before I leave, I hope I’ll see you later

He was 20 years old when he made the announcement that he’s taking a break from his thriving music career so he can serve in his mission in Chile. He has always believed in letting the smallest voices be heard, of reaching out to people through his music. It has always been his calling: more than music itself, it’s using that music to reach out to people’s hearts. And he knows that it’s the people who truly matter to him–his boy(s), so to speak–who will always understand that about him, and support him.

He had to leave early to go to the Philippines, though, to tape his soap opera and to exclusively release an OPM album, so there was someone he wasn’t able to meet before he left for his mission–someone who also came to the Philippines that same year just a few months after Archie left, and who must have also heard all the songs Archie recorded [for him].

(It’s probably why that someone can’t help but share, in his own concert, how much he misses Archie.)

Soon we’ll be thirty years old, Our songs have been sold We’ve traveled around the world and we’re still roaming Soon we’ll be thirty years old

And Archie did write–about everything. All his epiphanies and experiences and lessons from Chile that he learned: he wrote about it, and shared it with all of his devoted fans and loved ones. It’s how everyone knew–especially those he had to leave behind–that it had all been worth it.

He isn’t close to thirty (though he’s getting there), but someone else is already past that mark. And it’s curious, the way Archie sings the plural pronoun–it means that someone else has shared his same experience of travelling the world and performing music everywhere. Both of them have sold tons of CDs and have had sold-out concerts, one of which they shared in a country that Archie seems to hold close to his heart too, enough to take the songs back with him and sing them in America.

They’ve both taken a break from that kind of lifestyle for different reasons, but somehow they serendipitously found their way back to that path at nearly the same time – coincidentally, after Archie returned.

It’s because with that homecoming came the realisation that they both cannot deny how music will always be a part of their lives and their hearts. Music is who they are, at their very core.

… It’s just that this love of music takes them across different states–far away from each other.

I’m still learning about life My woman brought children for me So I can sing them all my songs And I can tell them stories Most of my boys are with me Some are still out seeking glory And some I had to leave behind My brother I’m still sorry

The lyrics here get interesting; it talks about his woman, but not necessarily his wife; someone who brought children for him, but aren’t necessarily his. (This becomes apparent in the next lyrics, later on in the song.) Regardless of whether or not he actually desires to have a wife and/or children, his calling in life still remains crystal clear despite the uncertainty of his family life: no matter what, he intends to continue to be a storyteller, whether through writing, or music, or both.

At the same time, he sings about his boy(s) who are still with him, and are still out there, making careers for themselves, still. And what stands out in the lyrics is that he had to leave some of these people behind when he carved his own unconventional path, straying from the Idol limelight even as he once shared it with so many of his dearest friends.

There is only one, though, that he reaches out to ask for forgiveness, possibly because he knows that out of everyone, it is this person whom his absence has hurt the most.

Someone, perhaps, who has always told the media that he loves Archie like a brother (at first)… and then later on amends those proclamations to simply saying that he loves him.

Over, and over, and over again.

Soon I’ll be sixty years old, my daddy got sixty-one Remember life and then your life becomes a better one I made a man so happy when I wrote a letter once I hope my children come and visit once or twice a month

Soon I’ll be sixty years old, Will I think the world is cold Or will I have a lot of children who can warm me? Soon I’ll be sixty years old

And then there’s that distinct, special person again; perhaps, the man whom he has asked forgiveness from is the same man he has made happy when he reaches out to him, despite the distance (because it’s only when you’re separated that you write someone a letter).

(Is it a coincidence, perhaps, that when a certain someone declares through a song: “I can let you go because I wrote the last song I’ll write for you,” Archie releases, on almost the exact anniversary of his departure, a song asking someone: “I can see you hurting, turn around: I will be right there, don’t run away”?)

Perhaps, he has always made that man happy. Perhaps, he makes that man happy, still.

It’s interesting, though, that despite everything that he has been through (or perhaps because of it?) this is still the uncertainty that still plays on his mind: the heavy weight of being unable to make the world a little less cold through his music… and the loneliness of the possibility of not having children.

Why not, if he plans to have a wife, like a normal Mormon?

And here, we come back full circle to the questions he started out with, but with a clear difference now: gone is the father telling him to have a wife to ease the loneliness.

The one thing that remains true – as constant as the presence of Archie’s own beloved mother – is the gentle reminder of the mama to fight the loneliness simply by keeping the friendships that have always been there, loving Archie more truly, constantly, and completely, than a marriage ever could.

In this world of change, this is the permanence Archie can rely on.

(”When all you know seems so far away, and everything is temporary, rest your head. I’m permanent.”)

… Once I was seven years old.

Age is determined when you begin counting from a point in time that you deem your birth. Biologically, it’s when you finally break free from your mother’s womb. Sometimes, however, there are points in time when we seem to be reborn, breaking free from past notions of what we once believed was right and wrong in life and in love.

It’s been seven years (going on eight) since Archie has been on the stage of the finale that changed his life, standing right next to the reason for his rebirth. And perhaps… this is his way of acknowledging that. Because the Archie who is singing this song right now – who’s a lot more jaded, but also a lot kinder for it – is indeed only seven years old.

The lyrics of this song is perfect in its coincidence. And yet… I don’t believe in coincidences. I don’t believe in fate, either, in things being meant to be.

If there’s something the theory of the quantum multiverse is trying to teach us, it’s that everything that ever happens to us is solely because of our choices. Coincidences don’t happen because we choose these moments to happen; fate doesn’t lead us there because we choose to be there.

… It’s not a coincidence that Archie sang this song. He chose to.

And isn’t it the same, in love? Isn’t love all about choosing the person, over and over and over again, despite having a vast multitude of other choices presented before you?

There are plenty of choices Archie could’ve made. Plenty of choices Archie can still make. But this is what he chooses, as he acknowledges in this concert where he first performed this song: he chooses to come home.

Because home is where the heart is. And that is why sometimes, home isn’t necessarily a place. It’s wherever the person whom you’ve given your heart is, too.

And to wrap this all up: Archie, now that he has returned, chooses to move to Nashville.

I wonder who else is living there?
