One of my fav things to think about that I thought you'd like is Andrew having hearing problems so he has hearing aids right. And when people (*cough* kevin) annoy him he maintains eye contact and reaches up and turns his aids off. Then walks off to sulk in Neil's general direction.

okay honestly? you have no idea how much i love this idea

andrew is already the type of person to ignore people but if he has hearing aids it so much more obvious

like kevin going on and on about andrew’s “lost potential” or eating habits?

also imagine: instead of russian (or in addition to russian) neil and andrew learn sign language together

so andrew can mute the world around him whether he is overwhelmed or just generally spiteful and annoyed, but he still can communicate with neil

and they are just very fast at signing and no one can keep up

the other foxes try, but they honestly don’t understand

andrew and neil learned ASL which is honestly its own language with different grammar structures and syntax 

so even if the foxes recognize some words, it’s never enough

neil and andrew have the most fun coming up with signs for all the foxes 

because most of them are offensive things, nothing actually sweet

except for abby and bee

abby’s sign is a mix of mom and nurse while bee’s sign is the sign for bee like a bumble bee

the rest of the signs are stupid things 

kevin’s is the equivalent of drama queen

dan’s is captain

wymack’s is the same sign as grumpy

andrew always refers to katelyn as just “girl” because he doesn’t want to make a sign for her

but in turn she ends up having the sign for girl because who else would andrew ever be talking about with that sign?

it’s not pulling a knife on nicky for making a stupid comment about andrew and neil

it’s still not feeling safe enough to fall asleep on the bus, but being okay with letting neil use him as a pillow

it’s a dry, raspy chuckle when sir fat cat tries to jump from one cabinet to the next and falls onto the counter

it’s running his knuckles over neil’s cheek bone when they’re watching a movie just because he can

it’s a short, unexpected laugh when he sees neil playing with the cats

it’s the warm, gentle feeling in his chest that he recognizes but doesn’t want to name

it’s neil whispering “andrew” and placing and hand on his shoulder but he doesn’t flinch

it’s neil clutching a letter of offer in his hands with tears in his eyes but not on his cheeks and andrew says “i knew you could do it”

it’s andrew rubbing his thumb over the silver ring on his left hand and smiling absently at it

it’s andrew, tense and angry, watching neil’s game on tv with kevin in the next chair over and king draped across his lap

it’s andrew holding neil’s hand over the center console as the drive across the country and letting neil kiss the back of his hand

it’s kissing neil on the forehead when he wakes up just to see neil’s sleepy smile

it’s several years later when andrew is able to match that smile with his own

it’s tentative

it’s brittle

because andrew will never be 100% okay

but he’s doing better, so much better
