What is soup?

“soup” is a human-designed liquid food item, differing from “beverages” and “smoothies” by the distinction of being commonly used as a hearty full meal. It is typically consumed at midday (“lunch”) or in the evening “dinner”, but it can be argued that the aforementioned “smoothie” as well as the common morning aliment “cereal” are, in fact, types of soup as well.

Most soups are savory in nature and are served warm or hot. Some exceptions to this are gazpacho, a refreshing Mediterranean cold soup, and zenzai, a sweet red bean paste soup served as dessert in Japan (specifically Okinawa).

Common side dishes for the traditional hot/savory style of soups are bread and cheese. Soup is common to all human civilizations.

The Dome that Soup and Daughtry live in is not a residential one. Rather, it’s industrial, mostly occupied by a large water treament facility. The Dome is partially flooded, about a quarter to a third of the way at a given time, and the equipment used to pump the water out is very old and prone to breaking down, as well as power outages.

Because it is not residential, when the sky screens broke, nobody bothered to repair them, and the Dome is lit entirely by huge floodlights all over the facility. When the power fails, it’s dark.
