People have said a lot of this already, but…
Folks are saying “I think Miles/Kerry/whoever would be horrified at the suggestion that he’s making fun of military vets with PTSD”, and I don’t doubt that’s true, but at the same time, nobody’s saying a word about rape, because that’s the joke. It’s right there in the PSA, literally spelled out on the screen. Rape as a trigger is a punchline. It’s just too darn hard to stop making rape jokes, and it’s super darn hard to warn people ahead of time when they happen, and we need, like, fancy algorithms that Simmons made or something and he’s real good at computers, y’know. You can’t expect us to cater to you when it’s that much work, silly!
I find it pretty hard to buy any positive intentions about “starting a discussion” given that the PSA literally ends with everyone running off to see the trainwreck in the comments. This is 2010-level dank meme humor. It’s a dude poking a hornet’s nest, then running away giggling. *le trollface* U mad bro? Miles was giddy when he was talking in that interview about how much he was looking forward to this PSA.
And man, if you’ve got a strong stomach, check out the comments on the RT site. Check out all the gloating about “those damn SJWs” and “tumblrinas”. Check out the massively sexist and homophobic language on display. It’s all about “putting those pansies in their place”. Yeah man, I’m so thrilled we’re “starting a discussion” here. Each slur carefully selected for maximum erudition. Boy oh boy. Yippee.
For the millionth time, it’s abundantly clear that the male-skewed fanbase on the RT site/the subreddit is the fandom that most of RT is comfortable with. It’s where they all started. They see themselves in those fans. Tumblr is something completely alien. Tumblr is the awkward, irritatingly critical and cheerfully weird part of fandom that RT loves to poke fun at right up until their cosplay and fanart is giving them free promotional material. And it’s sure as hell not the first time tumblr’s been the butt of the joke–they make fun of “girl fandom” like it’s going out of style. How many times has “lol shipping!” been a punchline? The awkward-gamer-dudebro contingent of fandom is never the butt of the especially mean-spirited jokes in this show–we’re always meant to sort of laugh at but simultaneously sympathize with Palomo staring at Jensen’s ass, or Simmons being awkward around girls, like, haha oh man what a loser, I remember when I was like that around girls. (And hell, if we’re spreading the mean-spirited comedy around, awkward-gamer-dudebros are a goldmine. Lest we forget, it wasn’t a “sjw tumblrina” who fellated a microphone at a Q&A that one time at RTX…)
Just, come on. Use a split-second of critical thinking and work out what part of the fandom is consistently the butt of the jokes here, and why. What part of the fandom’s not welcome here, and why. You’re allowed to get angry over something like this, even if the PSA was designed to make you feel bad about that.
