What happened to Marius was completely inhumane and we should be ashamed that this sort of thing is still happening in the world. This should not fall on deaf ears. He had a life just like any of us … and it was tragically cut short. For what reason other than selfishness and pride in oneself? He could have been sold but they refused. This type of animal cruelty needs to stop now.
RIP Marius.
Lion found hanging in its cage becomes the latest victim of wretched Indonesian animal park dubbed the ‘zoo of death’
Michael the 18-month-old lion ‘got his head stuck between steel cables’
Zoo denies negligence saying animal must have been ‘playing around’
His body has disappeared and police have not been able to examine it
More than 40 animals died at zoo between July and September last year
Previous expose revealed dead giraffe had 20kgs of plastic in its stomach
Tiger’s digestive tract rotted after being fed meat laced with formaldehyde
The world’s cruellest zoo has claimed another victim after an African lion was found hanging in its cage, it emerged today.
The Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia, which has outraged MailOnline readers around the world after an expose on the treatment of its animals, is being investigated by police following the death of the 18-month-old lion called Michael.
But the lion’s body was removed before police were able to examine it and cannot now be found.
A senior officer declined to say whether it was believed the zoo was trying to hamper the investigation.
Michael was found strangled in his cage after his head became stuck between steel cables, the Jakarta Globe reported today.
The tragedy comes just 24 hours after it was learned that a wildebeest died in its enclosure from a stomach problem, although the zoo said that the wet weather was partly to blame.
The death of Michael the lion is certain to cause further demands from animal lovers around the world for urgent action to be carried out at the zoo.
Latest statistics, covering the months between July and September last year, reveal that 43 animals died at the zoo during that period.
Among those which have died there previously is a giraffe that was found to have 20 kilograms of plastic in its stomach and a Sumatran tiger found to have a rotten digestive tract after being regularly fed meat laced with formaldehyde.
In the wake of Michael the lion’s death, zoo spokesman Agus Supangkat denied that his death was caused by zookeepers’ negligence.
'We are still investigating how the steel cables could entrap the African lion's head,' he told the Globe.
'Michael was relatively young. He was only one and a half years old. It could be that he was playing around and somehow his head got stuck.'
Mr Agus said each of the zoo’s lions - there are now only four left - spends its days in two different cages.
Each morning, the lions are taken to a display cage where visitors can view them. Then, in the afternoon they are moved to another cage where they sleep, said Mr Agus.
He explained that the zoo used steel cables to secure the cage so zookeepers did not have to manually open or close the cage door with their hands.
This, he said, was a safety precaution to prevent the keepers being injured.
Michael was sent to the zoo last March by the East Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency.
Surabaya Police detectives chief Senior Commander Farman told the Globe that a team of officers had visited the zoo to gather evidence but the corpse was missing.
He said that if the lion’s body could be found ‘we are going to wait for the autopsy results, then we can further examine the case.’
A MailOnline investigation into the zoo before Christmas found numerous cases of animals living in miserable conditions, including a young elephant that was chained by three legs, one of which was ulcerated because of its tight shackles.
Dozens of petitions were started pleading for the zoo to be closed and animal rights groups have added their voice to the demands.
But a management team, headed by the Surabaya Mayor, Mrs Tri Rismaharini, has resisted improvements saying they want to retain the original structures erected by Dutch colonialists in 1916.
adoptpets: This is just horrible! How the fuck hasn’t the government of Indonesia forced this place to shut down is beyond me. Here are some previous posts that I reblogged in the past on my blog about this zoo:

(Fifteen-year-old the orangutan had difficulty breathing before she died, Surabaya Zoo spokesman Agus Supangkat said, adding she had just undergone a week of intensive treatment. The ape’s death comes two weeks after a 12-year-old Borneo orangutan named Nanik (pictured) died from an intestinal tumor and liver problems. Orangutans typically live between 50 and 60 years. This comes on the heels of a 15-year-old endangered orangutan at the zoo named Tori was forced to quit smoking. Management had allowed visitors to throw lit cigarettes at her for 10 years, making the smoking orangutan the zoo’s star attraction.)

Hey friends, today is the first day of Meat Free Week! If you’ve ever wanted to consider yourself an environmentalist, humanitarian, animal lover or simply compassionate human being, now is your chance 💚 I was going to share some of the harrowing information that originally caused me to change my life a couple of years ago but accidentally ended up getting real sad, so instead I’m just going to let you know some sustainability facts:
👣 A plant based diet reduces your carbon footprint by 50% 🐮 You save 2 months worth of water (3000+ litres) simply by skipping one hamburger 🌲 Animal agriculture is responsible for 91% of amazon destruction 💭 Livestock is responsible for 65% of nitrous oxide emissions (296 x more destructive than CO2) 🐯 Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution and habitat destruction 🌎 A person following a vegan diet uses 1/18th land and 1/13th water compared to a meat eater 🌀 If everyone in the USA ate no meat or for just one day a week, it would be the equivalent of taking 5 million cars off the road.
It would mean so much to me (and literally the entire planet) if you could even just stop eating animals for even one week. I am more than happy to answer any questions, send you links and resources, find recipes or even make you a plant based meal plan. Anything at all that can help, please don’t ever hesitate to ask.
Please get involved in #meatfreeweek, you’ll be improving your health, saving money, saving lives and literally changing the world 💛🐷🐥♻️🐔 (at www.earthlings.com 🐘)

VEGAN: A cruelty-free person who saves 100+ animals per yr just by loving them & NOT eating them.
i honestly don’t understand this logic of people refusing to do the right thing because they don’t want to identify with others in that group?
like “i’m sorry i really care about animals but i will never be vegan because i met another vegan who was rude once”
i see this done with so many different things and I’m sorry but i just think it’s so immature to ignore those who are suffering simply because you’d rather not be associated with a certain group or because you “don’t believe in labels”.
Sea Shepherd Fleet has located all five vessels of the Japanese whale poaching fleet, including the Japanese factory ship, the Nisshin Maru, inside the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
The Steve Irwin, The Bob Barker and The Sam Simon are now in pursuit of the whaling fleet, driving them away from their intended poaching grounds, disrupting their illegal hunt, and preparing to shut down their whale-killing operations.
The Steve Irwin’s helicopter first located the Nisshin Maru at 64°44’ S, 162°34’ W, in New Zealand’s sovereign waters in the Ross Dependency Antarctic region, and inside the internationally recognised Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
Sea Shepherd has obtained compelling footage and images of three dead protected Minke Whales on the deck of the Nisshin Maru, taken at the time the factory ship was first located. A fourth whale, believed to be a Minke, was being butchered on the bloodstained deck.
Sea Shepherd Australia Managing Director, Jeff Hansen, stated, “The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary has been tainted by the illegal slaughter of these beautiful and majestic Minke Whales by the ruthless, violent and barbaric actions of the Japanese whale poachers. No one will ever know the pain and suffering these playful, gentle giants went through from the time the explosive harpoon ripped through their bodies to the time they drew their last breath in a red sea full of their own blood. One thing is for sure, Sea Shepherd will do what ever it takes to ensure no more whales have to endure pain and suffering at the hands of these whale butchers from Japan.”
Three dead, protected Minke Whales on the deck of the Nisshin MaruCaptain of The Steve Irwin, Sid Chakravarty, said, “When ‘science’ requires you to grotesquely bloat up the bodies of protected whales, stroll across a deck smeared with their blood, hauling their body parts with hooks and chains, and discarding their remains over the side, then that ‘science’ has no place in the 21st Century. The Nisshin Maru is an out-and-out butcher ship and a floating butchery has no place in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Sea Shepherd will remain relentless in driving these fake, desperate and subverting ‘scientists’ back to Tokyo.”
The Japanese whale poaching fleet operates in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in contravention of the 1986 global moratorium on commercial whaling under the guise of scientific research. In June 2013, the government of New Zealand joined the Australian government’s challenge to the legality of Japan’s whale hunt in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary at the International Court of Justice. A judgement on the case is yet to be delivered.
Captain of The Bob Barker, Peter Hammarstedt, said, “Once again, the Japanese government has shown flagrant disregard for international law by continuing their illegal whale hunt while the world patiently awaits a decision from the International Court of Justice. The Japanese government’s dishonourable attempt the skirt the legal process is an insult to the cooperation demonstrated by people around the world, dedicated to enacting conservation laws out of a shared recognition for the need for environmental protection.”
Managed and led by Sea Shepherd Australia, Operation Relentless is Sea Shepherd’s tenth Antarctic Whale Defence Campaign. In its previous nine campaigns, Sea Shepherd saved the lives of over 4,500 whales.
Sea Shepherd Australia remains the only organisation committed to defend the integrity of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary by directly intervening against the illegal operations of the Japanese whaling fleet.

Rare white calf snagged in dolphin capture
The annual dolphin roundup and slaughter in Taiji, Japan, is followed closely by conservationists and animal rights groups, but widely ignored by the mainstream.
However, making headlines Friday was the rare capture of an albino bottlenose dolphin calf, which was among 250 dolphins that were herded into pens and earmarked for sale to marine parks, killing for human consumption, or eventual release.
The white dolphin, on Saturday morning local time, was the first live animal to be removed from the pod.
The pod was the largest herded into Taiji Cove in years, according to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which monitors the hunts annually via on-site volunteers.
(The hunters and dolphin buyers shun activists and the media, and do not generally conduct interviews regarding the controversial hunts.)
Sea Shepherd, which offered a live webcast of the selection process from a bluff overlooking Taiji Cove, tweeted about the fate of the white calf: ”Rare white Bottlenose dolphin was taken completely covered to the Taiji Whale Museum, where it will most likely spend the rest of its life.”
Screamed a headline in the Daily Mail, before the selection process began: “Dolphins including rare albino worth millions await their fate after being rounded up in cove while Japanese fishermen decide whether they live or die.”
From the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: “250 Dolphins Face Slaughter in Japan Today, Including a Rare Albino—You Can Help!”
Sea Shepherd is based in Washington state. The selection process was still ongoing at the time of this post.
The calf was removed in a sling that was dragged through the water alongside a small boat.
Prior to this, it had been clinging closely to its mother in the collection pen.
Before the albino dolphin was removed, Sea Shepherd stated: “If not killed, the albino will most certainly be taken as a novelty for Taiji’s local marine park attractions. In some cultures, it is taboo to capture and otherwise harm albino animals.”
This is true. A case in point was the killing of an albino “spirit moose” by three hunters last October in the Nova Scotia wilderness. It sparked outrage among the aboriginal Mi’kmaq people, who revere such creatures.
Japan’s dolphin hunt occurs sporadically between September and April.
So far in 2014 alone more than 170 dolphins have been killed and 24 were kept for sale to marine parks, Sea Shepherd states.
Some dolphins are sold globally, but many are sold to marine parks within Japan. Representatives of marine parks were present Saturday to pick out dolphins that would be purchased as potential show animals.
Taiji’s annual dolphin hunt was brought to mainstream attention in 2009 with the release of the Academy Award-winning documentary “The Cove.”

PLEASE SIGNAL BOOST THE HELL OUT OF THIS!! Need 96k signatures by Feb 2nd!
I personally amNOTtrying to shut down SeaWorld, We’re confident they can run a park that is both entertaining and educational without exploiting sentient, highly intelligent marine animals.
THIS IS IMPORTANT! These animals deserve to live out their existence without being forced to perform tricks for the sake of entertainment! [x]
EDIT: petition did not reach 100k, has been taken down.
THE FAROE ISLANDS ‘GRIND’
Every summer, hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pilot whales are deliberately and helplessly stranded before their spinal cords are severed with knives in a centuries old bloody ‘ritual.’ However, once the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society heard about this heart wrenching, inhumanely horrific massacre, they headed straight to the Island to challenge their ways. To make matters even more horrendous, pregnant females also fall victim to the knives of the Faeroese with their fetus chopped out of them and dumped into bins carelessly.
“What the Faeroese do is even more cruel than the slaughter of the dolphins in Taiji, Japan,” said Sea Shepherd Chief Executive Officer Steve Roest from the United Kingdom. “What Sea Shepherd began in Taiji led to the production of the Academy Award film The Cove. We need to put a similar spotlight on the Faeroes.”
