Chrissy hadn’t been able to focus on much of anything since Valentine’s, after th humiliation and then how busy she was helping at the hospital wing, there wasn’t time to really think. When she finally got a moment to herself, she found an empty hall and sat on the floor, leaning her head against the cool stone wall. She didn’t realize she fell asleep like that until she heard someone come closer, then she was wide awake. “What? Oh Merlin, I must have dozed off...you won’t tell anyone will you?”

“So… let me get this straight,” Amelia began, tucking her hair behind her ear as she normally did when she meant business. “You’re telling me, that you asked him out to the dance. He said no because he did not want to go -” which she wasn’t surprised by that “- but then proceeded to show up, not with one date… but two?” ( @offlora​ )

Chrissy groaned in embarrassment, then brought her knees to her chest and rested her head on them. “Exactly! I mean, if he didn’t like me that much he could have just said so instead of making me feel like an idiot,” she sighed. “Am I just so stupid that I didn’t see that he hated me all this time?”

“Really? Really?” Amelia scoffed, looking at the other and shaking her head in disbelief that they didn’t even try to hide what they were doing. She was a Prefect afterall. “I’m standing right here.”

Chrissy blushed, suddenly trying to hide the seeds she was caught taking from the herbology room. “What? These? I have total permission to be doing this right now,” she lied. “I mean, would you punish your own house?”

“It was more confusing than nasty, plus it was months ago. I think I’ve got too much love to give to not be open to finding someone new.”

I’m not coming back. This was why Gideon didn’t let his guard down, why he didn’t allow himself to fall for people. It only ended it heartbreak. Crumpling the note in his hand, Gideon tossed it to the floor before setting it on fire, tears pricking at his eyes. Fuck this, he desperately needed a distraction. Anything to take his mind off of his aching heart. With a heavy sigh, Gideon shoved his wand back in his pocket apparating to hogsmeade.

Roaming the busy fair, Gideon’s lips curved upwards as the sight of the other, approaching them hastily. “Brilliant. You’ll do. Distract me please.”

Chrissy was about to make a smart-ass comment, but once she saw his expression she thought better of it. He certainly didn’t seem like himself, so she did what she saw he needed, she reached out and hugged him. “Always,” she promised before letting go to look at him. “I can see something’s bothering you. Come on, tell me over some butterbeer,” she insisted with a sympathetic smile, linking her arm through his to lead them to the three broomsticks.

It didn’t really have to be said – Claire Fawley was furious, both with herself and her team. And it showed in the way she had yelled at her teammates after the game and snapped at everyone else she met. And she hasn’t simmered down when Chrissy came to her. “Are you fucking kidding me? You screwed up. You screwed up do bad all you have to say for yourself is that it won’t happen again? I can’t believe this!”

Chrissy sighed, taking a deep breath to try and not let Claire’s anger get her riled up either. Not that getting riled up was ever something she really did. “I know, I know I ruined everything but what else do you want me to say? I’m sorry Claire, I was having an off day but it won’t happen again,” she repeated, at a loss for words. She couldn’t very well say why she was distracted after all.

“I hope you’re not afraid of heights!” Chrissy laughed as she grabbed Gideon’s hand and dragged him to the line for the ferris wheel. “I love seeing everything from up there. Do you think if I bribe the operator with a few galleons, he’ll let us go around a few extra times?”

Chrissy sighed as she watched students skating around, seemingly having a blast. She wasn’t always the biggest fan of the cold, so somehow she’d gone all this time never learning how to skate. Now, determined to try it, she stood at the edge of the rink with skates on, trying to get the courage to push herself forward and risk tipping the balance she found by staying still. She saw Blaise nearby and smirked in spite of her best efforts. “Don’t laugh, this is much more terrifying than it looks for people who haven’t done it before.”

The thought of talking to the team captain right now made Chrissy feel nauseous, but she knew it was inevitable. Taking a deep breath, she braced herself for the bad news she was sure to get and approached Claire. “Hey, listen I’m so sorry about today. It won’t happen again,” she promised. “I swear it.”

Anna had lost track of how many shots she’d been given, but she sure was feeling warm. Warmth that rose to her cheeks, flushing them a bright red–a sure sign that the girl was drunk. If there was one thing besides music that could cheer her up, it was Quidditch. Beyond her love of the sport itself, there was always a party after. Be the victor Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff, she’d be at the party. Pouring herself yet another shot, plus another one to give to someone, she walked over to the nearest person.

“Here. Cheers to Sun, and cheers, yet again, to James Fucking Potter!” And, with that, she downed her shot.

Chrissy laughed and took the shot from her housemate, downing it but noting that she should stop there. She didn’t want to be off her game with the new team captain they had after all. “You’re really the school’s quidditch superfan, aren’t you?” she laughed. “So what do you predict for our team then? I’d love to know what you think.”

“And risk losing house points? Or getting expelled? Honestly, my family and my house have worked too hard to have me ruin things for them like that.”

It was easy to notice her cheeks turning pink, it was something he often teased her about when they had been together, how easy it was to make her flustered but it wasn’t something he should be commenting on now. He simply smiled when she thanked him for getting her out. “I am just happy you are okay.” he said, his gaze holding her for a moment a too long before he realized that and quickly turned away. “Um – how did you get so drunk anyway?” he asked, glancing her way again, quite aware that it wasn’t her kind of scene. 

Now she felt like she might be blushing for an entirely different reason, feeling embarrassed at the thought that he had seen her so drunk. Especially considering what inspired her to start drinking that night in the first place. “Oh you know, when a relatively small woman drinks a little too much alcohol...” she laughed awkwardly, then took a breath. “Honestly? I was there alone and I saw you. I thought I was fine, but I guess I’m just still confused by everything. I guess I hoped it would get my mind off of...everything,” she admitted sheepishly.

He was relieved when she didn’t question further, but it only made it all the more hard to do what he intended to. After all, if she had gotten angry at him like Sam had, he could use that as an excuse to break things off, but all he could see was worry etched on her features. “I’ll be alright.” he forced a smile to his lips. “And I am really sorry, I didn’t mean to worry you.” A small sigh left his lips at her touch – maybe he should change his mind, he felt like he had lost so much, he didn’t want to lose her too, but as his eyes met hers all he could think was how she deserved better than him. “I can’t be with you anymore.” the words fell through his lips bluntly, he didn’t want to drag it because looking at her was already shattering is resolve to end this and that just wouldn’t be fair to her. 

Chrissy was stunned into silence, all she could do was stare at him. She had assumed he was dealing with something, but she had never pictured he would be breaking up with her. Had she been naive? She had assumed he would want her there for him, to help him through whatever had happened, and she was ready to drop everything to do that. “Are you breaking up with me?” was all she could get out before her eyes felt hot. She hated how easily she cried when overwhelmed. “I don’t understand,” she stammered, shaking her head. “Did I do something wrong?” As those words came out, a couple of tears managed to slip out and inch their way down her cheeks. She wondered if he was upset she hadn’t gone to see him when she didn’t hear from him, could that be it?

“But when it’s in the pursuit of new knowledge, don’t you think it’s worth it?” Augustus asked.

“Well, sure, but there are rules for a reason,” Chrissy insisted. “I don’t know, I suppose I’m not much of a rule-breaker.”

“It’s such a dumb prejudice,” Gideon shook his head, “I mean, my family are purebloods but look at us. We don’t hate on people over something they can’t control.” The boy wrapped his arm around her shoulders, draping the blanket over her as well. “You’re gonna live long enough to do great things, Chrissy. You know I’m gonna always protect you whenever I can right? If anyone wants to hurt you, they gotta go through me first. Besides, I’m a lot smarter than I look,” He joked softly, trying to lighten the mood a little.

Chrissy smiled and rested her head on his shoulder. “Thanks, that means so much to me,” she admitted. “And that goes both ways. I’m not the best at duelling but I can still make myself an obstacle,” she chuckled. “Don’t sell yourself short, you look plenty smart. You know...most of the time,” she teased. “My brother would have really liked you. What’s been going on in your life anyways?”

When he caught her eyes, Blaise considered turning right around and walking away but it was too late – she had waved at him, albeit awkwardly, and he had no choice except to go speak to her. “Yeah, I guess I got lucky.” It was weird how comfortable he used to feel around her and now it was the absolute opposite. He did remember what happened at the night of the Ball before all the shit went down but he wasn’t sure if she did, and even if she did, should they talk about it? He had no idea. He had however made helped her get out of the chaos that night and worry coloured his tone as he brought that up. “You look good too–” he said before biting his lip, realizing how that sounded. “Well. you look well.” he corrected himself, fingers running through his hair. 

Chrissy blushed instantly, she hoped he wouldn’t notice but she was sure it was unavoidable. Part of her wished he hadn’t corrected himself so quickly. “Um, thanks. You do too,” she nodded. All she could think about was that kiss, and whether it was the heat of the moment or if he had really meant it. Then he had made sure she was safe...Chrissy couldn’t figure out if he still cared about her anymore or not, let alone how much. “Thanks for helping me get out, I was...pretty drunk clearly. I might not have made it otherwise.”

Chrissy looked, well – angry. She did not have her usual smile on her face when he saw her and he realized then that he kind of missed that. She was always a ray of sunshine but it seemed he had fucked up enough that she looked like a different person. Which probably meant it’d be easier to do what he wanted, no, had to do which was end things with her. “Sorry.” he said softly. He didn’t really know what else to say for literally disappearing off the face of the earth without a single word. “Some things came up during the holidays – personal.. emergency?” She would probably want more of an explanation but he no intention of saying anything else. “I’m really sorry.” 

Chrissy didn’t believe that was all there was to it, but she could see he didn’t want to tell her more. She figured she could at least give him some time to open up to her, now that they were back at school and she could see him more often. “Well, I hope everything’s alright,” she concluded with uncertainty. “If you don’t want to tell me about it right now, I understand, but you know you can tell me anything.” Her expression softened and she reached out to put her hand on his arm. “I just wish you told me sooner. I was worried.”
