Cruel people existed, yes, but kind ones, in his opinion, far outnumbered them. Perhaps such despair, and distress, was premature. Shaking his golden head, a soft yet faint smile began to form about his lips, and his gaze became less sorrowful. “Worry not, cousin-mine. This is naught but a passing shadow upon my heart, soon to fade away and leave behind the sunlight. I am...merely very sorry that you had to bear witness to it while it lasted.”

He had watched, oh-so-carefully, trying to discern what he might. But, apparently, based upon the other’s reaction, he needn’t have worried at all.

The happiness the gift seems to have brought the recipient is enough that the not unfamiliar feeling of warmth floods his chest once more and an actual smile threatens to appear on his normally impassive face. His gifts had been received far better than what he had even dared to hope, and he is happy. Really, truly happy.

To have such a reaction be followed by the kiss to his forehead––he can hardly believe there was a time when he would have dodged or (nearly) recoiled at such a gesture from Glorfindel––and then the comfort and even peace that accompanies the closeness of the way they stand, feelings that very few have ever managed to grant him… He could ask for no more than that…

And yet, when at last they part, Glorfindel takes his hands within his own and smiles, telling him that he has gifts as well. He does not know why he is surprised––truly, had he expected any less from Glorfindel, of all elves?––but he is, yet he tries to keep the surprise from his face.

Instead, he does as instructed and closes his eyes yet another show of the level of trust the other ellon has earned over the many years.

“Very well, gwador. My eyes are closed. Lead on.”

Glorfindel had always been someone who enjoyed the entire process of gift-giving. He had been that way since the dawn of time; he had been that way in Valinor, and in Nevrast, and in Gondolin. He had been known well as someone who, if befriended, would shower his companions in as much treasure as he would the treasure of his own tender affection, and that had not changed since his death and rebirth, rather growing all the stronger. Perhaps it was merely that he was kind and good soul – a thing that no one could truly doubt, if they knew him – or perhaps it was that he thought that his purpose since his rather abrupt return was to bring joy to a dark world. As such, he was generous to the core, and spared no expense to make those around him feel both valued and wanted. Thranduil had become to him of late a brother,and as a brother he would be rewarded justly. “I laboured long over this,” he said, leading him gently through the halls, careful not to let the king’s feet strike so much as a loose or jagged stone along the way. “I laboured long, and thought hard about what I might give you, on this occasion of gift-giving. Truly there is nothing that could bring adequate payment for the friendship you have given me, nor for the comfort.” But laboured hard he had indeed, and now as they reached at last the smithery, so gently did he take the Elvenking’s hands and press into them a long smooth scabbard, dotted with brilliant gems. “Open your eyes.”Glorfindel would be standing there, glowing with a sunny smile, and in Thranduil’s hands would be a magnificent, lengthy sword. When drawn, it would shine like starlight, and there were elvish inscriptions in the steel. It was very, very much like the swords the master smiths of Gondolin – including Rog himself – had made for the great Lords and Ladies there. It was a blade fit for a king, and it was blade chosen by the Golden Lord to be the King’s own.
